INTRODUCTION
The had iths of our Prophet (saas) pro vide very
detailed infor ma tion and signs about the End Times,
which will occur short ly before Doomsday. According
to these reports, sev er al high ly sig nif i cant events will
take place one after the other dur ing this peri od. In the
first stage of the End Times, ter ri ble cor rup tion and
chaos will rule; in the sec ond stage, these will be
replaced by peace and secu ri ty as peo ple come to live
by true reli gious moral val ues.
Our Prophet (saas) impart ed glad tid ings regard ing
the Mahdi, who will be sent dur ing the End Times. For
exam ple, this great indi vid u al will lib er ate Muslims from
cru el ty and suf fer ing; elim i nate cor rup tion; and usher in
an era of peace, jus tice, plen ty, hap pi ness, and well
being. According to reli a ble had iths, he will return Islam,
which has been dis tort ed via super sti tions and prac ti -
ces, to its true essence; meet with Prophet ‘Isa (as);
and, by Allah's will, will ena ble Islam's moral val ues to
pre vail on Earth.

These great tid ings enhance all believ ers' enthu -
si asm and excite ment. Many of the pro phet ic had -
iths and schol ar ly man u scripts that have come down
to us have trans mit ted the joy and enthu si asm of
those tid ings and have kept the sub ject alive and of
inter est among believ ers. The por tents that we are
see ing in our own time show us that the Mahdi's
com ing is close at hand. Indeed, the cur rent cli mate
of chaos, oppres sion, ter ror, and war, as well as the
strife, fam ines, and earth quakes, are all por tents of
this great event.

Many of the pro phet ic had iths that have been hand -
ed down to us in the works of great Islamic schol ars
are devot ed to por tents of the Mahdi's com ing. This
sec tion exam ines the links between these had iths and
the present day. We shall see that they describe the
con tem po ra ry cli mate and con di tions and cer tain crit -
i cal events that took place in the recent past accu rate -
ly and mirac u lous ly.
As stat ed ear li er, both the Mahdi's com ing and the
ful fill ment of the had iths regard ing the por tents of
Doomsday start ed com ing to pass, one after the other,
at the begin ning of the 1400s ah (1979-80), clear ly
reveals that these are the years of the Mahdi's pres -
ence on Earth. (Allah knows the truth, of course.) Let's
now exam ine these por tents.

com ing describe them as occur ring one after the other
"like the dots on a prayer-beads." We can see that this
is the case, for as stat ed in the had iths, chaos and anar-
chy are on the rise all over the world, sedi tion is grow -
ing, slaugh ter and ter ri ble catas tro phes are tak ing place
in many lands, pov er ty and hun ger are increas ing, and
peo ple are suf fer ing ter ri bly. The fact that these por -
tents are com ing to pass at one par tic u lar time shows
that the Mahdi, the bless ed per son for whom Muslims
have await ed for cen tu ries, will come soon. (Allah knows
the best!)
Some of the reports relat ed to this sub ject are as fol -
lows:
I asked Abu Abdullah Husain ibn Ali: "Are there por tents
of this?" – in ref er ence to the Mahdi's appear ance. He
said: "Yes." I asked: "What are they?" He said: "The
destruc tion of the [tribe of the] Bani Abbas, the emer -
gence of the Sufyani (Abu Sufyan), and sink ing in
Bayda." I said: "I am afraid this will all take a long time,"
to which he replied: "These things will hap pen one after
the other, like the dots on a tas bih (prayer beads)."

Fitnas (sedi tions) will fol low one anoth er in the near
future. Then, there will be other fit nas and even more
fol low ing them.

2) THE PROLIFERATION OF SEDITION (FITNAS)The word fitna (sedi tion) describes events, envi ron -
ments, and con di tions in which all peo ple, espe cial ly
believ ers, face inten si fied tests of their faith. Such tests,
in which liv ing con di tions are dif fi cult and efforts are
made to weak en or destroy peo ple's faith, are all
described as fitna in Islamic sour ces.
The fol low ing had ith describes how believ ers' faith
will weak en prior to the Mahdi's com ing and the caus -
es there of:
The Mahdi, one of my chil dren, comes into being, by
the bless ing of Allah, when the Day of Judgment
approach es and the believ ers' hearts weak en because
of death, hun ger, the dis ap pear ance of the Sunnah, the

emer gence of inno va tions, and the loss of the means
by which to enjoin the right and for bid the wrong. His
jus tice and pros per i ty will ease the believ ers' hearts,
and friend ship and love will set tle between the non-Arab
and the Arab nations.

To sum ma rize, the fol low ing events will take place
before the Mahdi appears:
1) Death: Public secu ri ty will dis ap pear in the face of
anarchy, wide spread slaugh ter, and the ensu ing ten -
sion.
2) Hunger: The high cost of liv ing, as well as catas -
tro phes and nat u ral dis as ters, will cause a rise in hun -
ger and fam ine.
3) Fitnas (Sedition): Sin will be encour aged and
spread, and all kinds of immor al actions will take place
before peo ple's eyes.
4) Un-Islamic inno va tions (bid'at): Customs that have
no place in true Islam and that were added on and grad -
u al ly came to be accept ed as a true part of it, will
emerge.
5) Being Unable to Preach the Religion: An emp ti -
ness caused by being una ble to teach how good is
com mand ed and evil for bid den; in other words, the
preach ing of reli gion.

Disorder, sedi tion, and fear will emerge in the west...

Another had ith reveals that the Mahdi will come when
sedi tion is every where:
A kind of sedi tion will sur face from which no party will
be able to pro tect itself, and spread imme di ate ly in every
direc tion. This sit u a tion will per sist until one comes and
says: "O peo ple, from now on your lead er is the Mahdi."
(Ibn Hajar al-Haytahami, Al-Qawl al-Mukhtasar fi 'Al a -
mat al-Mahdi al-Muntazar, p. 23)
In other words, a sedi tion that oppos es reli gion and
Allah will tar get peo ple's faith. Today, this sedi tion is
mate ri al ist phi los o phy, the sup posed sci en tif ic basis
of which is Darwin's the o ry of evo lu tion. Although it is
com plete ly irra tion al, unsci en tif ic, and devoid of any
sci en tif ic or log i cal proof, mate ri al ist cir cles are seek -
ing to impose this the o ry on every soci e ty through inten -
sive prop a gan da, decep tion, and mis rep re sen ta tion.
This the o ry enters our homes through the press and
tel e vi sion, wheth er we live in the West or in the Muslim
world. Forming a part of most sci ence and other text -
books, it is imposed upon chil dren from the early grades
through con stant rep e ti tion, such as its most famous
claim: that peo ple are descend ed from a com mon
ances tor with apes. Young peo ple are fed these evo -
lu tion ist lies from pri ma ry school to the uni ver si ty.
In addi tion, the sedi tion referred to in the pro phet ic
had iths can only become so wide spread through mod -
ern-day tech no log i cal means (e.g., the press, pub lish -
ing, the Internet, and sat el lite com mu ni ca tions). Indeed,
such wide spread sedi tion has never been seen before
today. All of these are impor tant signs that the Mahdi's
com ing coin cides with our own time. The had iths also
state that this sedi tion will end when the Mahdi comes.

Doomsday will not take place until these things come
to pass… Death and slaugh ter will be wide spread…

There will be cries of war in Shawwal and war and car -
nage in Dhu al-Hijjah. Again in Dhu al-Hijjah, pil grims
will be plun dered and the roads will be filled with
blood… The blood shed will con tin ue and increase.

…The Hajjis will be loot ed, and there will be a bat tle at
Mina in which many will be slain. Blood will flow until it
runs over the Jamra al-'Aq a ba. [Jamra: a stone pil lar
rep re sent ing Satan that is stoned dur ing the pil grim -
age.]

There will emerge wide spread strife that seems impos -
si ble to ever end...

People make pil grim age with out an imam lead ing them.
Big wars break out when they come down to Mina, and
they are entwined just the way dogs entwine, and tribes
attack each other. This strife is so wide spread that legs
are bur ied in lakes of blood.

Such a strife will appear that nowhere will be spared.
When it ends in one place, it will imme di ate ly spread to
anoth er...

every one aware of this cor rup tion and dis as ters. Even
though there may only be few peo ple present at the
scene, the whole world will learn what is hap pen ing
instan ta ne ous ly. Radio, tel e vi sion, news pa pers, and
the Internet will broad cast blood shed, injus tice, and
oppres sion to the whole world.

4) THE GLOBAL PERVASIVENISS OF CHAOS ANDCONFLICT
At a time when the world will be in utter con fu sion and
dis or der (harj), fitna will appear, peo ple will be attacked,
the old will not have mercy on the young, and the young
will not show respect to the old, Allah will send some -
one (the Mahdi) to erad i cate hos til i ty, con quer the cas -
tles of per ver sion, uphold faith in the End Times just as
I upheld it for mer ly; some one who will fill this Earth with
jus tice where vio lence pre vailed before.

Rather than describ ing one par tic u lar place, the had -
ith refers to chaos (e.g., con flict, war, slaugh ter, and
ter ror) spread ing all over the world. Indeed, this is the
case today, a time when every day hun dreds of peo ple
are killed or exiled for no fair rea son.

aimed at them. The con flicts and cli mate of chaos expe -
ri enced in parts of the Islamic world, both now and in
the recent past, as well as the oppres sion that has led
to dic ta to ri al regimes in cer tain Muslim coun tries, are
some of the proofs that this time has begun.
Everyone bow ing (ruqu') and pros trat ing (sajda) them -
selves in prayer will be pun ished. Cruelty, mal ice, and
vice will be pro duced; schol ars and ascet ics mur dered;
and many cit ies con quered. There will be hos til i ty to
Prophet Muhammad (saas), blood shed and destruc tion
will be legit i mate.

tion, alco hol con sump tion, usury, and brib ery are

and more peo ple are indulg ing in them. Even more,
some those who engage in them are praised and

and belit tled. Lifestyles that know no bounds, that care
noth ing for what the scrip tures allow and for bid, and
that regard all forms of excess as per mis si ble have
spread far and wide dur ing the last few dec ades. The
had iths describe this dark age, a her ald of the Mahdi's
com ing, as fol lows:
Strife will be seen, and more will fol low. Such a level of
strife will come that the first will spur the last to clash -
es of swords, and after this there will be such strife that
what is for bid den is regard ed as law ful. Then the cal i -
phate will come to the Mahdi, the most aus pi cious indi -
vid u al on Earth, while he is sit ting at home.

The Mahdi will not emerge until unbe lief invades every -
where and is open ly com mit ted in pub lic. What rules in
such times is… the inva sion by unbe lief. That is its
power.

There will be tumult in Shawwal, talk of war in Dhu al-

They will be going up Mutekh; Muslims will be com ing

When a shep herd see ing an army mov ing across the
desert on a bright night says: "It will be a sad ness for
Makkah. Woe will befall them," he will see the army sud -
den ly dis ap pear. He will say: "Subhan Allah. How did
they dis ap pear so quick ly?" When he goes down and
looks, he will see a blan ket half under the ground and
half out. He will try to extract it. But when he can not, he
will real ize that the army he saw has been bur ied…

14) STOPPING THE FLOW OF THE EUPHRATESThe block ing and stop ping of the Euphrates' water is

One of the por tents of the Mahdi's com ing is the stop -
ping of the Euphrates.

war for it. Ninety-nine out of every hun dred will be killed,

gold moun tain. Let no one who is there take any thing

As we have seen, stop ping the Euphrates' water is
an impor tant sign. In addi tion, many had iths say that a
treas ure as val u a ble as gold will emerge. Let's exam ine
these signs fur ther:
Allah's Messenger (saas) said: "The Hour will not come
to pass before the Euphrates dries up to unveil the
moun tain of gold, for which peo ple will fight. Ninety-
nine out of one hun dred will die [in the fight ing], and
every man among them will say: 'Per haps I may be the
only one to remain alive.' "

"worth its weight in gold," for the result ing increased
pro duc tion of elec tric i ty made it pos si ble to irri gate

As can be seen above, this dam resem bles a huge con crete moun tain. A
treas ure as val u a ble as gold will pour forth from it (from the "moun tain,"
accord ing to the had ith's met a phor). This makes the dam a "moun tain of
gold." (Allah knows the truth.)

month, the Moon will dark en...

The most impor tant points here are the solar eclipse
in the mid dle of Ramadan and that the Sun and Moon

can not be eclipsed twice in one month under nor mal
con di tions. However, other por tents can hap pen as a
result of cer tain caus es and can be com pre hend ed.
Close inspec tion of the phe nom e na described in
these had iths reveals var i ous dif fer en ces between the
accounts. According to the first, sec ond, and third
accounts, the Moon will be eclipsed on the first day of
Ramadan, and accord ing to the fourth it will be eclipsed
on the last day. The cor rect course of action here is to
find the com mon ground in these accounts:
1. There will be lunar and solar eclip ses in Ramadan.
2. These eclip ses will be equi dis tant, at inter vals of
14-15 days.
3. These eclip ses will be repeat ed twice.
In line with these cal cu la tions, the Moon was eclipsed
on 15 Ramadan 1401 (1981) and the Sun on 29
Ramadan 1401. And, the Moon was again eclipsed on
14 Ramadan 1402 (1982)) and the Sun on 28 Ramadan
1402.
Significantly, this had ith declares that the Moon
should be eclipsed in the mid dle of Ramadan as a full
moon. This is noted as being a por tent.
The fact that these events took place in the same
peri od as the other por tents of the Mahdi's com ing and
were mirac u lous ly repeat ed twice at the begin ning of

A star with a lumi nous tail will rise from the east before
the Mahdi emer ges.

ing out an illu mi na tion.

The star's rise will occur after the eclipse of the Sun and
the Moon.

As stat ed in the had iths:
- Halley's Comet passed close to Earth in 1986, at
the begin ning of the 1400s ah (1406 ah). This comet
was a bright, shin ing star that moved from east to west
and appeared after the lunar and solar eclip ses of 1981-
82 (1401-02). The fact it was born at the same time as
the other por tents con firms that Halley's Comet is the
celes tial body referred to in the had ith.
Imam Rabbani pro vides the fol low ing infor ma tion
about this spe cif ic por tent:

Some Interesting Figures Linked to Halley'sCometInterestingly, some fig -
ures per tain ing to the
comet are mul ti ples of 19.
For exam ple, Halley's
Comet appears every 76
years
(19 x 4 = 76) and
was last seen in 1406
ah
(19 x 74 = 1406).
Surat al-Muddaththir,
which refers to the mir a -
cle of 19 in the Qur'an, is
the sev en ty-fourth surah. Moreover, its thir ti eth verse
reveals that 19 is a means of mercy for believ ers and
of fitna for unbe liev ers. A last great mir a cle and sign of
this comet is its appear ance in 1986 (1406 ah), its nine -
teenth appear ance since 610, when Prophet
Mohammed (saas) was hon ored with proph e cy.
In Surat al-Muddaththir 74:1-2, Allah com mands our
Prophet (saas): "O you who are envel oped in your cloak,
arise and warn." The mean ing is clear. Yet, they may
be a hid den mean ing: "(the one) envel oped in cloak"
may well refer to the Mahdi, who is from our Prophet's
(saas) lin e age and whose appear ance will be sig naled
by the rise of Halley's Comet in 1406 ah.
17) STORMING THE KA'BAH AND THE SUBSEQUENT BLOODSHED
The year in which he will emerge, peo ple will per form
hajj togeth er and gath er with out an imam. The Hajjis
will be loot ed, and there will be a bat tle at Mina in which
many will be slain and blood will flow until it runs over
the Jamra al-'Aq a ba. [Jamra: a stone pil lar rep re sent ing
Satan that is stoned dur ing the pil grim age.]
(Narrated by 'Amr ibn Shu'ayb, al-Hakim and Nu'aym
ibn Hammad)
People make pil grim age with out an imam lead ing them.
Big wars break out when they come down to Mina, and
they are entwined just the way dogs entwine, and tribes

attack each other. This strife is so wide spread that legs
are bur ied in lakes of blood.

The phrase "the year in which he will emerge" draws
atten tion to a mas sa cre that will occur on the date of
the Mahdi's emer gence. In 1979, a mas sa cre very like
this one occurred dur ing the raid on the Ka'bah, which
took place dur ing the pil grim age month on the first day
of the Islamic year 1400 (21 November 1979). The had -
iths also men tion blood shed. The kill ing of 30 peo ple
dur ing the clash es between Saudi sol diers and mil i -
tants dur ing the raid con firms the rest of this had ith.
Seven years after this attack, an even blood i er event
took place dur ing the Hajj: 402 peo ple were killed in
attacks on pil grims dem on strat ing in the streets, and
much blood was spilled. Muslims com mit ted ter ri ble
sins by kill ing each other (the Saudi troops and the
Iranian pil grims) beside al-Bayt-al Mu'azza mah (the
Ka'bah). These bloody inci dents bear a close resem -
blance to the cli mate described in the rel e vant had iths:
The Prophet (saas) said: "There will be a voice in
Ramadan, a noise in Shawwal, and war between the
tribes in the month of Dhu al-Qa'dah. Pilgrims will be

despoiled. There will be a war in Mina in which many
will die, to such an extent that so much blood will flow
as to leave the stones there in a lake of blood."

Shawwal. In Dhu al-Qa'dah, the tribes will fight one
anoth er. In Dhu al-Hijjah, pil grims will be despoiled. In
Muharram, there will be a shout from the sky: "Take
heed. Such a per son is of the aus pi cious ones of the
peo ple of Allah. Listen to and obey him."

There will be rebel lion in Shawwal, talk of war in Dhu al-
Qa'dah, and an act of war in Dhu al-Hijjah. Pilgrims will
be despoiled, and their blood will flow [over the Ka'bah].

In the month of Dhu al-Qa'dah, the tribes will wage war,
pil grims will be kid napped, and there will be bloody
wars.

There come the cries of war in [the month of] Shawwal
with the out break of war, mas sa cre, and car nage in [the
month of] Dhu al-Hijjah. The pil grims are plun dered in
this month, the streets can not be crossed because of
the [amount of] blood shed, and reli gious pro hi bi tions
are vio lat ed. Big sins are com mit ted near al-Bayt-al
Mu'azza mah [the Ka'bah].

A great sin will be com mit ted beside al-Bayt al-Mu'azza mahThe above had ith draws our atten tion to inci dents
that will occur by al-Bayt al-Mu'azza mah (the Ka'bah),
not inside it. In con trast to the first, the events of Dhu al-
Hijjah 1407 ah (dur ing the hajj sea son) hap pened not
inside the Ka'bah, but beside it. The first event
described took place inside the Ka'bah on 1 Muharram
1400, in line with the indi ca tions given in both had iths.
Two major events, shed ding blood in the Ka'bah and
kill ing pil grims, take place one after the other at a time
when all of the por tents regard ing the Mahdi are com -
ing true. This appears to be more than coin ci den tal.
When we exam ine the expres sions in these had iths,
we see signs point ing to other impor tant events that
will occur at the same time:

the light ning between the ground and the sky."

Here, we give a brief expla na tion of this flame:
Some peo ple wait for this flame as a sign that comes
sud den ly and for no par tic u lar rea son, that never goes
out, and that every one can see. Since the trial con tin -
ues dur ing the occur rence of these signs, just because
peo ple will see them does not mean that they will under -
stand them. Thus, peo ple will make their deci sions by
using their intel lect, mind, con science, and will. If the
End Time signs had been nar rat ed in full detail (e.g.,
how, when, and where they will occur), every body
would have had to accept them. Thus, no dif fer en ces of
degree would be left among the peo ple. For this rea -
son, these had iths have been com mu ni cat ed in a semi-
implic it man ner.
The sign con cern ing the flame must be eval u at ed in
this man ner. A flame is the result of either an acci dent
due to neglect or to a delib er ate action. The had iths do
not say that it must occur as a very strange and extraor -

di na ry sign. What real ly counts is its occur rence in com -
pli ance with the prop er ties of the flame described in
the had iths and the time of its occur rence. To do this,
first we must con sid er its prop er ties.
In July 1991, after Iraq invad ed Kuwait, a huge fire
spread through out Kuwait and the Persian Gulf as the
Iraqis fired Kuwait's oil wells. This is how this fire was
cov ered in the media:
- The burn ing oil in Kuwait led to the deaths of peo -
ple and ani mals. According to experts, half a mil lion
tons of oil went up into the atmos phere as smoke. Every
day, more than 10,000 tons of soot, sul fur, car bon-diox -
ide and large quan ti ties of hydro car bons with their car -

oil as Turkey does in one day, and the smoke from them
were even seen from Saudi Arabia, 55 kil o me ters away.

- Hundreds of oil wells set alight in Kuwait are still
burn ing fierce ly. Experts say it will be "exceed ing ly dif -
fi cult to put those fires out," and it is said that the fires
may affect a wide area from Turkey to India for the next
10 years.
The fire and smoke com ing from the wells con stant -
ly pol lut ed the atmos phere. Daytime resem bled night
in Kuwait. The brown smoke that rose togeth er with the
flames remind ed one of the sky as the autumn turns
into win ter… It has been stat ed that it would take at
least a cen tu ry for Kuwait to be com plete ly hab it a ble
again. The smoke that rises with the flames is vis i ble
from miles away, total ly block ing out the sky and mak -
ing the coun try unfit to live in. The wealthy are aban -
don ing Kuwait.
According to a state ment by Abdullah Dabbagh,
direct or of the research insti tute in Dhahran, in the New
York Times, 106 spe cies of fish, 180 spe cies of mol -
lusk, and 450 ani mal spe cies liv ing in the region strug -

Gulf. It has been stat ed that smoke ris ing from 600 oil
wells has spread to neigh bor ing coun tries, and that

al pro duc tiv i ty.

I swear that a fire will enfold you. That fire is cur rent -
ly lying extin guished in the val ley known as Berehut [the
name of a val ley or a well].

The had ith's first part says that the flame "is pres -
ent ly in an extin guished state." Given that the flame is
the result of burn ing an inflam ma ble sub stance, what
waits in an extin guished state is not the flame itself but
rath er the mate ri al to be burned by the flame. In this
con text, this may mean under ground oil. Berehut is the
name of a well. This can be con sid ered an oil well. When
the time comes, oil extract ed from these wells will
become a fire ready to be burned.
"That flame swal lows up peo ple with ter ri ble pain
inside it." This flame is not mere ly a burn ing flare, but
also one that deprives peo ple of their lives and pos ses -
sions, mak ing them mis er a ble and sor row ful, and con -
tam i nates the sur round ing envi ron ment.
"That flame … burns up and destroys peo ple and

prop er ty." This flame caus es the death of peo ple. In
addi tion, it burns up prop er ty, caus ing mate ri al dam -
age, and, by pol lut ing the sur round ing envi ron ment,
destroys what peo ple need in order to live.
"… spreads all over the world in eight days by fly ing
like a cloud with the assist ance of winds." This par tic -
u lar ele ment is the smoke that the flame pro du ces.
Thus, this met a phor indi cates that the smoke will reach
as high as the clouds and spread in all direc tions due to
the wind.
"Its heat at night is much high er than its day time tem -
per a ture." In other words, the flame will burn around
the clock.
"By going as deep as the cen ter of Earth from above
the heads of peo ple, that flame makes a ter ri ble noise,
just like the thun der between the ground and the sky."
Attention is drawn to the facts that the flame will climb
very high into the air and cause a very strong noise and
explo sions resem bling a thun der.
"… a brand new red ness, unlike the usual color of
red, spread ing over the sky…" This part of the had ith
points out that the inci dent will occur at night, for the
flames of a large night time explo sion lead to a very
strong illu mi na tion. The red illu mi na tion caused by such
red flames is very dif fer ent from the red "dawn" red -
ness with which peo ple are famil iar. Such an illu mi na -
tion at night, which is very sim i lar to day light, is an
extraor di na ry phe nom e non.

Mohammed's (saas) birth. For exam ple, a new star rose
on that night, 14 tow ers of the Iranian emper or's pal -
ace col lapsed, the Magians' (fire wor ship pers') sacred
fire that had burned for 1,000 years in Iran went out,
the Semavi Valley was flood ed, and the Save Lake dried
up. As indi cat ed in the had iths above, the Mahdi's
emer gence will also be marked by great and mirac u -
lous phe nom e na.

THE MAHDI'S FEATURES
Through the words "Be told the glad tid ings of the
Mahdi" (Al-Muttaqi al-Hindi, Al-Burhan fi Alamat al-
Mahdi Akhir al-Zaman, p. 12) our Prophet (saas) has
drawn atten tion to the impor tance of await ing the
Mahdi's com ing with excite ment and enthu si asm, and
of pre par ing for this spe cial indi vid u al. Another had ith
describes the love and devo tion that the believ ers
should feel toward him: Whoever wit ness es him, let
him/her go to him, even by crawl ing over snow. Let
him/her join him, because he is the Mahdi. (Sunan Ibn
Majah, Fitan, B 34, H 4082; Al-Muttaqi al-Hindi, Al-
Burhan fi Alamat al-Mahdi, p. 14)
THE MAHDI WILL DEFINITELY APPEAR
Even if only one day of the world remained, Allah would
extend that day until he (the Mahdi ) takes power.
(Al-Muttaqi al-Hindi, Al-Burhan fi Alamat al-Mahdi, p. 10)
If it were the last day of life, Allah would pro long that
day until He sends a man (Mahdi) from the Family of my
[Muhammad's] House.

bless ing the like of which has never been seen before.
He will cause much rain to fall, and the plants of the

would extend it, so that one from my House would come
and rule the world. His name match es mine, and his
father's name my father's name. Just as the world was
filled with cru el ty, he will fill it with jus tice.

THE MAHDI WILL BE DESCENDED FROM OURPROPHET'S (SAAS) LINE
Even if there remains only one day for the world, Allah,
the Exalted, will send a man from the Ahl al-bayt (People
of the House).

Be told the good news of the Mahdi. He is one from the
Quraysh and from my Ahl al-bayt.

The Mahdi is one of my chil dren. His face is like a star
shin ing in the sky.
(Ali b. al-Sultan Muhammad al-Harawi al-Hanafi,
Risaletul Mesreb elver di fi mez heb il Mahdi)
All pro phets are relat ed to one anoth er. As stat ed in
the had iths, the Mahdi will also be of that line. These
descend ants are pop u lar ly known as "say y id," and so
the Mahdi will also be a "say y id."
In the Qur'an Allah refers to mes sen gers being
descend ed from one anoth er. These vers es may also
indi cate that the Mahdi will be descend ed from that
line. (Allah knows the truth.)
Allah chose Adam and Nuh, the fam i ly of Ibrahim,
and the fam i ly of ‘Imran over all other beings –
descend ants one of the other. Allah is All-Hearing,
All-Knowing. (Surah Al ‘Imran, 33-34)
Our Lord, make us both Muslims sub mit ted to You,
and our descend ants a Muslim com mu ni ty sub mit -
ted to You. Show us our rites of wor ship and turn
toward us. You are the Ever-Returning, the Most
Merciful. (Surat al-Baqara, 128)
And some of their fore bears, descend ants and broth -
ers; We chose them and guid ed them to a straight
path. (Surat al- An‘am, 87)

ALLAH WILL PERFECT HIM IN A SINGLE NIGHT
The Mahdi is from us, from the Ahl al-bayt. Allah will
per fect* him in a night. (* i.e., will for give him, or give
him suc cess and the inspi ra tion of wis dom and gui -
dance)
(Sunan Ibn Majah, vol:10, Bab: 34, p.348)
Islamic schol ars have explained this had ith as fol -
lows:
The bet ter ment of the Mahdi in a sin gle night refers to
his being given emi nent sta tus. He can not obtain this
sta tus by work or endeav or. As stat ed by Almighty Allah
in the Qur'an, this bless ing bestowed on the Prophet
(saas) has also been given to the Mahdi. In verse 52 of
Surat ash-Shura, Almighty Allah has said: "Accordingly
We have revealed to you a spir it (Ruh) by Our com mand.
You had no idea of what the Book was, nor belief.
Nonetheless, We have made it a Light by which We
guide those of Our ser vants We will. Truly you are guid -
ing to a Straight Path." The Mahdi is the most vir tu ous
and the most per fect per son of his time in mat ters of
reli gion. This shows his great ness, the exalt ed nature
of his sta tus, and the great ness of his rank.

Bediuzzaman Said Nursi refers to the Mahdi in these
terms:
In the time of the worst afflic tion of the End Times, He
will send a lumi nous indi vid u al who will, of course, be
THE GREATEST JUDGE (a great Islamic schol ar to pro -
nounce judge ments), and THE GREATEST RENOVA-
TOR (an Islamic schol ar sent at the begin ning of every
cen tu ry to teach reli gious truth accord ing to the needs
of the age), A RULER, A MAHDI, A GUIDE, A SPIRITU-
AL MENTOR (a great teach er to whom Muslims devote
them selves, the great est teach er of the age), and he will
be from the line of our Prophet (saas).

MAHDI IS THE PEOPLE'S BELOVED
The Mahdi will not appear until he is the best loved by
the peo ple because of the evils that befall them.

the Mahdi will appear in a man ner approved of by all.

Allah will place his words in the peo ple's hearts. Thus
they will be a com mu ni ty who are lions by day and who
wor ship by night.

THE MAHDI WILL BE SPOKEN OF EVERYWHEREThe had iths men tion the time when the Mahdi will be
spo ken of and for long after he appears. In other words,
his name will spread through out the world.
When a her ald from the skies cries out: "The truth is in
Al-i Muhammad," the Mahdi will appear. Everyone will
speak only of him, drink of his love, and speak of noth -
ing else.
(Al-Suyuti, Portents of the Mahdi, p. 33)
After a her ald cries out from the sky: "The truth is in the
peo ple of Prophet Muhammad (saas)," the love of the
Mahdi will enter peo ple's hearts and there will be no
talk of any thing else.
(Al-Haythami, Al-Qawl al-Mukhtasar, p. 20)
THE MAHDI BE RECOGNIZED AGAINST HIS OWNWISHESThe had iths reveal that the Mahdi will be recog nized,
although he will not per son al ly desire this. In other
words, he will not open ly pro claim him self. Even though
peo ple will come to him and say: "The por tents are
present in you; you are the Mahdi," he will deny it. Only
after being "threat en ed with death" will he accept peo -
ple's rec og ni tion.

People will come to the Mahdi, between the Rukun and
the Maqam, and take an oath of alle giance to him,
against his own wish es. "If you refuse, we will strike
you," they will say. And the peo ples of Earth and sky
will approve of him.

There will be con flict at the time of the cal iph's death.
One from the peo ple of Madinah will run to Makkah. A
group of Makkans will bring him forth (from where he
is) against his wish es and take an oath of alle giance to
him between the black stone (al-hajar al-aswad) in the
Ka'bah and the place of Ibrahim.
(Sunan Abu Dawud, 5/94; al-Haythami, Al-Qawl al-
Mukhtasar, p. 20)
… And then he will reluc tant ly accept their oaths of alle -
giance. If you wit ness this, take the oath of alle giance to
him, because he is the Mahdi in heav en and on Earth.
(Al-Suyuti, Portents of the Mahdi, p. 35)
The Mahdi, who is from Fatima's line, will be brought
forth in Makkah, and oaths of alle giance will be offered
to him against his wish es.

… They will again find him in Makkah and say: "You are
the son of so-and-so, your moth er is the daugh ter of

so-and-so, you have the so-and-so por tents. You
escaped us once, but now hold out your hand so we
may swear loy al ty to you." At this, he will say: "I am not
he whom you seek," and will return to Madinah. Sought
for in Madinah, he will return to Makkah. In Makkah,
they will find him at the Rukun and will say: "If you do not
accept our oaths of alle giance, if you do not pro tect us
from the army of the Sufyan that is search ing for us and
led by one from Haddam, then let our sins be upon you
and our blood on your hands." At this, the Mahdi will sit
between the Rukun and the Maqam and hold out his
hand to accept their oath of alle giance.

At a time of blood shed, peo ple afflict ed by strife will
come to the Mahdi as he sits at home and say: "Rise
for us!" He will refuse, but will even tu al ly rise after being
threat en ed with death. No blood will be shed there aft -
er.
(Ibn Abi Sayba, c. VII, p. 531; Al-Muttaqi al-Hindi,
Al-Burhan fi Alamat al-Mahdi, pp. 52-53)
We are told in the Surah Yusuf that Prophet Yusuf
(as) was also ele vat ed by Pharaoh on account of his
hon esty, jus tice, knowl edge, and trust wor thi ness:
When he had spo ken with him, he declared: "Today
you are trust ed, estab lished in our sight." (Surah
Yusuf, 54)

WHERE THE MAHDI WILL BE RECOGNIZED
Then the cal i phate will pass to the Mahdi, the most aus -
pi cious of men, as he sits at home.

In Makkah, they will find him at the Rukun and will say:
"If you do not accept our oaths of alle giance, if you do
not pro tect us from the army of the Sufyan that is

this, the Mahdi will sit between the Rukun and the
Maqam and hold out his hand to accept their oath of

The oath of alle giance will be taken to him between the
Rukun and the Maqam. The Mahdi will be so mer ci ful
that in his time nobody will be woken out of sleep and
nobod y's nose will bleed.

THE MAHDI'S NAME
O People, it is cer tain that Allah has for bid den to you
the oppress ors, the hyp o crites and those who abide by
them, and has made the Mahdi, the most aus pi cious of
Muhammad's com mu ni ty, and who is in Makkah and

whose name is AHMAD, son of Abdullah, your lead er.
Join him.

The fig u ra tive mean ing regard ing the sub ject is
revealed thus in a verse:
… giv ing you the good news of a Messenger after
me whose name is Ahmad. (Surat as-Saff, 6)
A VOICE FROM THE SKY (VIA RADIO OR TELEVI-SION) WILL ANNOUNCE MAHDI'S COMING
... This sit u a tion will per sist until some one from sky
comes and says: "O peo ple, from now on your lead er
is the Mahdi."

When a voice cries out from the sky: "The truth is in Al-
i Muhammad," the Mahdi will appear.
(Al-Muttaqi al-Hindi, Al-Burhan fi Alamat al-Mahdi, p.

When you see a fire from the east for three or seven
days, you may expect Al-i Muhammad to appear. By
the will of Allah, a voice will cry out from the sky the
Mahdi's name so that all in the east and the west will
hear.

A voice will say from the skies: "The truth is in Al-i
Muhammad," and a voice will say from Earth: "The truth
belongs to the Al-i Isa and Abbas."

When inno cent peo ple are killed and his broth er is killed
in Makkah, a voice will cry out from the skies: "This is
your com mand. This is the Mahdi, who will fill the world
with jus tice."

Widespread strife that seems unlike ly to ever end will
arise and last until the cry "The Mahdi is the lead er, that
is the truth" is heard three times from the skies.
(Al-Haythami, Al-Qawl al-Mukhtasar, p. 55)
The had iths state that a voice from the sky will
announce the Mahdi's appear ance. In other words, peo -
ple will learn of this event through radio and tel e vi sion.
This voice will reach every one, in both the east and the
west. Indeed, every soci e ty will hear this voice in its
own lan guage:
A loud voice will come from the skies to the peo ple of
Earth, in such a way that every one will hear it in his/her
own lan guage.

Nowadays every one can enjoy access to the news
by means of radio, tel e vi sion, and the Internet, and
these reports are trans lat ed into their respec tive lan -
gua ges. In this way, every one will hear of his com ing.
PROPHET ISA (AS) WILL PERFORM THE PRAYERBEHIND THE MAHDI
Prophet ‘Isa (as) will per form the prayer behind the
Madhi.
(al-Haythami, Al-Qawl al-Mukhtasar, p. 24)
As the Mahdi was per form ing the morn ing prayer with
the believ ers in Jerusalem, he will intro duce Prophet
‘Isa (as), who then appears. Prophet ‘Isa (as) will place
his hands on his (the Mahdi's) shoul der and say: "The
call to prayer has been issued for you," and the Mahdi
will lead him and the believ ers in prayer as their imam.

THE MAHDI'S INTELLECTUAL WORK WILLCAUSE ISLAMIC MORAL VALUES TO PREVAILThe had iths reveal that nobod y's nose will bleed in
the Mahdi's time, that nobody will be harmed, and that
even those who are asleep will not be wak ened. This
shows that the Mahdi will wage an intel lec tu al cam -
paign by which he will silence those move ments and
sys tems that are incom pat i ble with reli gious moral val -

ues, and that he will cause Islam's moral val ues to pre -
vail.
The Mahdi… will walk in peace.

THE MAHDI WILL BRING OUT TRUE ISLAMICMORAL VALUESThe had iths reveal that the Mahdi will do away with
all super sti tions and prac ti ces that have been added
on to Islam. As we learn from the had ith"He will gov ern
peo ple with the Sunnah of the Prophet (saas)," he will
adhere to our Prophet's (saas) path and, just as in his
day, will be a means by which reli gious moral val ues
are truly lived.
He [the Mahdi] will prac tice the reli gion just as [it was
prac ticed] in the time of Our Prophet. He will elim i nate
the sects from the face of Earth. No sect, except for the
orig i nal true reli gion, will remain.

Allah will con quer Constantinople (Istanbul) for the peo -
ple of His most loved friends… He will remove ill ness
and trib u la tion from them.

Lands will fol low his com mands. Allah will favor him
with the con quest of Constantinople.

Many schol ars from var i ous lands will set out, una ware
of one anoth er, to seek the Mahdi, and up to 310 will
accom pa ny each one of them. They will all final ly meet
in Makkah. When they ask one anoth er why they have
come, they will answer: "We seek the Mahdi, who will
put an end to strife and cap ture Constantinople,

because we have learned the names of his father, his
moth er, and his army."

and has a halo on it. Unopened since the Prophet's
(saas) death, it will be unfurled when the Mahdi appears.

and he will delight in the fear of the LORD. He will

earth with the rod of his mouth; with the breath of his

ANGELS WILL HELP THE MAHDI
His com mand ers are the most aus pi cious of men. His
help ers will be from Yemen and Damascus. Jibrail will
be before them, and Mikhail behind. The world will be
filled with secu ri ty, and a few women will even be able
to go on the Hajj (pil grim age) with no men beside them.

It is like ly that the expres sion "the 95th year" refers
to 1995. Up until then, peo ple enjoyed lives of rel a tive
well-being and con di tions had not yet become that dif -
fi cult. After that, how e ver, a num ber of prob lems began

rais ing their heads. Various polit i cal dif fi cul ties were
expe ri enced in 1997. In 1999, the earth quakes in the
Marmara region and all across Turkey led to the great -

THE MAHDI'S WISDOM AND POWER OF COMPREHENSIONThe had iths reveal that Allah has bestowed a spe -
cial power upon the Mahdi:
He is called the Mahdi because he has a secret power
that can not be known by any one.
(Al-Muttaqi al-Hindi, Al-Burhan fi Alamat al-Mahdi)
Ibn al-Arabi lists nine of his main attrib utes:
1. He has fore sight,
2. He under stands the Book,
3. He knows the mean ing of its vers es,
4. He knows the states and actions of those he will
appoint,
5. He will still be com pas sion ate and just even when
angered,
6. He knows the class es of beings,
7. He knows the intri cate aspects of affairs
A lead er who is aware of such things can make no
mis takes in his com mands. The Mahdi knows how to
avoid mis takes because of his com par a tive knowl edge,
for his deci sions will be direct ly inspired. In other words,

he will rule with the law brought by Prophet Muhammed
(saas). For these rea sons, our Prophet (saas) said of
him: "He will fol low my trace and not fall into error."
From this we can see that the Mahdi will imple ment the
Shari'ah, rath er than mak ing his own.
8. He has a sound under stand ing of peo ple's needs
Since Allah has cho sen him, above all other peo ple,
to see to all their needs, his behav ior and deeds, just
like those of a true lead er, must be in the peo ples' inter -
ests, rath er than his own… A lead er who enga ges in
activ i ties that are con tra ry to the pub lic inter est and
who does not act on their behalf must be removed from
office, because there is no longer any dif fer ence
between him and other peo ple.
9. The man i fes ta tion of secret things in his time,
which will ena ble him to resolve all prob lems that may
arise.

and the milk-white gloves sent by Allah to the People
of Israel.

At night he will be busy with prayer, his days will be hid -

ders. The Mahdi will also encoun ter such things. (Allah
knows the truth):
"The Mahdi is from one of us, from the Family of my
House…" The Messenger of Allah (saas) said: ‘We are
such a house hold that Allah has pre ferred the Hereafter
to the world for us. The Family of my House will sure ly
suf fer trib u la tions, be kid napped, and exiled after me.
The Family of my House will encoun ter trials and trib u -
la tions and be exposed to vio lence.'"

Our Prophet (saas) refers to this state of affairs in the
fol low ing had ith:
The Mahdi will emerge with the Messenger's (saas) ban -
ner when peo ple suf fer trib u la tions one after the other
and have given up the hope of his emer gence. He will
pray two prayer cycles and then go to them and say:
"O peo ple, con tin u ous trials came to the nation of
Muhammad (saas), espe cial ly to the Family of his
House, and we have been con quered and wronged."

In the Qur'an, Allah has reveals that many pro phets
and mes sen gers were reject ed by their peo ples,
accused of being crazy or sor cer ers, and were sub ject -
ed to many assaults and great oppres sion. But they
remained patient in the face of these attacks and
respond ed in the fin est pos si ble man ner.
Messengers before you were also denied… (Surat
al-An‘am, 34)
We will be stead fast, no mat ter how much you harm
us… (Surah Ibrahim, 12)
But then they turned away from him and said: "He is
an instruct ed mad man!" (Surat ad-Dukhan, 14)
Equally, no mes sen ger came to those before them
with out their say ing: "A magi cian or a mad man!"
(Surat adh-Dhariyat, 52)
But he turned away with his for ces, say ing: "A magi -
cian or a mad man!" (Surah ash-Shu‘ara', 39)
He (Pharaoh) said: "If you take any deity other than

Some said that this book of val u a ble knowl edge is sub -
ject to the Mahdi's appear ance, who will come at the
End of Time, and he will under stand the knowl edge of

the time before books of the pro phets.

OBSERVATION AND SURVEILLANCE OF THEMAHDI
When the Dajjal appears, a man (the Mahdi) of the
believ ers will oppose him. Many armed men watch ing
in the Dajjal's cen ters will oppose him.

He is noth ing but a man pos sessed, so wait a while
and see what hap pens to him. (Surah Al-Muminun,

THE MAHDI WILL ENCOUNTER NEGATIVE PROPAGANDA In one had ith our Prophet (saas) indi cates that all the
oppres sion and the attacks against the Mahdi will mere -
ly fur ther strength en the him:
When the believ er [the Mahdi] sees the Dajjal, he will
say "O peo ple! This is the Dajjal spo ken of by the
Messenger of Allah." The Dajjal will imme di ate ly issue
com mands regard ing him and will make him lay flat on
his belly and cry, "Injure him." But that indi vid u al's back
and belly will be broad ened by the blows. Then the
Dajjal will seize him by his two hands and feet and cast
him away. People will imag ine the Dajjal has thrown him
into the fire. But he will have been cast into a gar den of
Paradise.

This had ith states that the Mahdi will be "broad ened
by being beat en on his back and stom ach." In ref er -
ence to this, the author of Mahdism and Imam Mahdi
says: "The Mahdi's fame is con stant ly announced and
spread." Yet since it is the Dajjal's sup port ers who will
do this, we may say that the prop a gan da will be intend -
ed to tar nish the Mahdi's rep u ta tion. The ene mies of
Islam at the time of our Prophet (saas) used poets, the
pub lish ing organs of the peri od, to den i grate him. These
poets behaved arro gant ly toward him at fairs and mar -
kets, accus ing him of mad ness and sor cery. In the end
times, too, the Dajjal's sup port ers will defame the Mahdi
and seek to dam age his rep u ta tion in the pub lic eye.
The had iths describe how the Mahdi's early years
will be full of strug gles, troub les, and dif fi cul ties. The
"Golden Age" belongs to his final years, for only then
will the Mahdi and Muslims achieve com fort, secu ri ty,
and plen ty and lead lives based on love, peace, and
unity.

Abu Abdullah Hussain ibn Ali reports that the Prophet

him nor any one else will know where he is, only a very
close ser vant will know.

Therefore, carry out the orders given to you and dis -

Therefore, do not obey the unbe liev ers and strive

Many pro phet ic had iths indi cate that an age will
dawn when Islamic moral val ues will pre vail on Earth.
These had iths inform us that this peri od, known as the
"Golden Age," will resem ble the "Age of Happiness."
People will be so con tent with their lives in the
Golden Age that, in the words of one had ith, "they will
be una ware of time's pas sage and ask Allah to extend
their lives so that they may make great er use of these
beau ties." Another pro phet ic had ith describes the
Golden Age as fol lows:
The young er ones will wish they were grown-ups, while
the adults will wish they were young er… The good will
become even more good, and even the wick ed ones
will be treat ed well.

A HITHERTO UNSEEN ABUNDANCE
There is a Mahdi in my com mu ni ty. People will come to
him and say: "O Mahdi, give to me, too. Give to me,
too!" The Mahdi will give him as much as he can carry
in his clothes.

"Whoever is in need, let him come to me," no more than
one per son will come. That per son will make requests.
The Mahdi will say: "Go to the treas ur er and let him give
to you." When he goes to the treas ur er, he will receive
goods in plen ty. But then he will feel remorse and say:
"Am I in great er need that every one else? Nobody went
but me," and he will seek to give back those goods.
Then the treas ur er will say him: "What we give, we do
not take back."

Earth will be filled with secu ri ty, and small groups of
women will be able to per form Hajj with out any men
along side them.

be removed from poi son ous ani mals. Even a small boy
will place his hand in a ser pent's mouth, and the ser -
pent will not harm him. The wolf will be like a dog in a
herd of sheep or goats.

In his time, the wolf will play with the sheep and snakes
will not harm chil dren. A per son will sow a hand ful of
seed and will receive back 700 hand fuls of grain.

Just as Allah has freed them from the her e sy of ascrib -

the sin of cor rup tion through the Mahdi and will make
them broth ers [and sis ters to each other].

In the same way that through us they were freed from

THE MAHDI'S PHYSICAL FEATURES
In addi tion to his moral val ues and strug gle, our
Prophet (saas) described the Mahdi's phys i cal appear -
ance in great detail so that those who see him will
imme di ate ly recog nize him.
One verse reveals that the People of the Book will
recog nize the Prophet (saas) as "they recog nize their
own sons."
Those We have given the Book recog nize it as they
rec og nise their own sons. Yet a group of them know -
ing ly con ceal the truth. (Surat al-Baqara, 146)
In the fig u ra tive sense, this verse refers to rec og ni zing
the Mahdi. When the Mahdi appears, peo ple will recog -
nize him, due to our Prophet's (saas) descrip tions of him,
just as they do their own chil dren. Yet despite this, some
peo ple will pre tend not to recog nize him and will deny him.
HE IS BEAUTIFUL AND RADIANT
He (the Mahdi) is a beau ti ful young man with an attrac-
t ive face. The radi ance of his coun te nance rises to his
head and the black of his hair.

Our Prophet (saas) had a red dish-white com plex ion.
However, the vis i ble parts of his skin were near er to
brown because of the Sun and the wind. The Mahdi will
be the same color as the Prophet (saas), whose com -
plex ion is described thus:

plex ion: He was white, but a brown ish white.

who has just left the baths and grown a lit tle pink, a
color the like of which nobody else will have at that time.

height." As we know, the word "rab'a" in the had ith

mal height refers seven hand spans.

THE MAHDI IS A SUBJECT NEEDING
TO BE WIDELY BROADCAST
RATHER THAN KEPT HIDDEN
Talk of the Mahdi is one of the Portents of
His Appearance
In his works, Bediuzzaman Said Nursi, the reviv er
(mujad did) of the 13th cen tu ry Hijri, has made a num ber
of impor tant state ments that serve as a guide to all
Muslims con cern ing the com ing of the Mahdi and the
way that he will be a rea son for Islamic moral val ues to
pre vail all over the world. Some cir cles, how e ver, main -
tain that, "it would be wrong and objec tion a ble in many
ways to speak open ly of the sub ject of the Mahdi," to
which Bediuzzaman devot ed con sid er a ble space in his
works.
The fact is, how e ver, that "The Mahdi is a sub ject
need ing to be broad cast, rath er than hid den or con -
cealed." The glad tid ings, of the com ing of the Mahdi,
have been impart ed by our Prophet (saas) him self; there
are a num ber of had iths of our Prophet (saas) on the
sub jects that are regard ed as com plete ly reli a ble. In
one had ith, the Prophet (saas) revealed that the sub -
ject rep re sent ed great glad tid ings for all Muslims:
"LEARN OF THE MAHDI. He is from the Quraysh and
is one of my house." (Al-Burhan fi Alamat al-Mahdi Akhir
al-Zaman, p.13) In anoth er had ith, which reads: "The
Mahdi will appear, AND EVERYONE WILL SPEAK ONLY
OF HIM, drink of his love AND SPEAK OF NOTHING
ELSE," (Al-Burhan fi Alamat al-Mahdi Akhir al-Zaman,
p. 33) our Prophet (saas) stat ed that when the Mahdi
appears, every one will speak of this holy indi vid u al.
These signs revealed by our Prophet (saas) have begun
to take place in our own day, and every one is speak -
ing of the Mahdi.
In his works, Bediuzzaman devot ed wide space to
this sub ject, describ ing it in detail over hun dreds of
pages. It is clear that had he thought the sub ject was
one need ing to be con cealed, or one which there was
no need to read about, he would not have includ ed all
these state ments in his trea tis es. Indeed, when a sub -
ject was to be avoid ed, Bediuzzaman wrote that this
was "con fi den tial" in his works and stat ed in var i ous
pla ces that it did not appear in the trea tis es because it
should not be pub lished. One of these state ments by
Bediuzzaman reads, "As for the trea tis es, we have
called such trea tis es con fi den tial … we have for bid den
them to be broad cast." (Bediuzzaman and His
Students' Trial Defense, p. 187)
As stat ed by Bediuzzaman, secret things should not

be pub lished. However, the sit u a tion is the exact oppo -
site of this when it comes to the sub ject of the Mahdi.
Bediuzzaman devot ed hun dreds of pages to elu ci dat -
ing the com ing of the Mahdi, made the mat ter a pub lic
one, and open ly stat ed that it was not an issue that
need ed to be kept hid den. Indeed, the fact that the trea -
tis es have been read by mil lions over the years makes
it clear that the sub ject is one for pub lic con sump tion,
not a secret one.
However, although Bediuzzaman's view is crys tal
clear, some peo ple have sought to sup port this mis -
con cep tion by load ing var i ous false mean ings onto
Bediuzzaman's words. One state ment by Bediuzzaman
that has been mis in ter pret ed to that end is this:
My broth ers' sec ond error: they ascribe a mor tal iden -
ti ty that is prone to decay to that help less broth er who
rep re sents the spir it u al enti ty of the Disciples of Light
and who forms the van guard in the first duty in cer tain
respects. Although these two errors do no harm to the
true puri ty of the Treatise on Light nor even in any way
to its use in spir it u al and heav en ly spheres, they cause
polit i cal cir cles to fall into an unfound ed error and the
pub li ca tion of the Treatise of Light is harmed. Since this
time is one of a spir it u al enti ty, such great and eter nal
truths can not be built on mor tal, help less iden ti ties that
are lia ble to error. In con se quence, it is wrong to give
the name of that per son age who will come and per form

three tasks. Both the puri ty in the Treatise that can not
be mis used will be harmed, and the truths will become
defi cient in the eyes of believ ers with lit tle knowl edge
of spir it u al things; even indis pu ta ble argu ments will turn
into an opin ion that is only part ly the truth, and the vic -
to ry over stub born proof and arro gant athe ism will begin
to not be seen among the con fused peo ple of faith.
Political cir cles and some reli gious teach ers will begin
to feel doubts. Therefore, it does not seem appro pri ate
to give that name in the Treatises. It may be said that
he is a reviv er, a pre cur sor." (The Seal of Affirmation of
Hidden Things, p. 10)
The facts stat ed by Bediuzzaman in this extract are
dis tort ed, and it is sug gest ed that "he said it would be
extreme ly dam ag ing for the sub ject of the Mahdi to be
spo ken about pub lic ly." Yet this idea is total ly based
on a mis in ter pre ta tion; what Bediuzzaman is say ing
here refers to his own time. He says that his dis ci ples
har bour a mis con cep tion about him with regard to the
Mahdi, but that "this is an error that stems from con fu -
sion." For that rea son, he tells them not to "speak in
this way or make any claims with regard to the Mahdi."
On close inspec tion, how e ver, Bediuzzaman is say ing
that it is not speak ing of the Mahdi that is objec tion a -
ble and dam ag ing, but direct ing claims regard ing the
rank of Mahdi towards him self, since these are found -
ed on an erro ne ous opin ion. He reminds them that at

that time, bring ing up such a mis tak en idea regard ing
him self will dam age the truth and may cause cer tain
pol i ti cians unease, harm the pub li ca tion of the Treatise
of Light and mean that the trea tise enjoys only half a
vic to ry over the deniers. Bediuzzaman says that hold -
ing such an erro ne ous view will lead to the vic to ry of
"what is prob a bly the truth" and thus to the mis di rec tion
of the peo ple of faith; as a result of this uncer tain ty, this
will pre vent Muslims from being able to rec og nise the
true Mahdi.
With the terms he also employs here, Bediuzzaman
has many times reit er at ed that he is not the Mahdi. For
exam ple, he does not say, "I have per formed the
Mahdi's three tasks at the same time." Note that he
says that he has only led the way for the Mahdi in the
first of the Mahdi's duties, that of regard ing the truths
of faith, and that he has only per formed this in one way.
By say ing "it will be wrong … to give the name of that
per son age who will come in the future," he is stat ing
that it will be wrong for him to be given this name
although he is not the Mahdi and that this will dam age
the truth, for which rea son the name of Mahdi should
be given, not to him, but to that indi vid u al who will come
in the future. Regarding him self, he says that he may
be referred to as a reform er and "the pre cur sor" of the
Mahdi.
In addi tion to all this, as we know, the date given by

Bediuzzaman regard ing the appear ance of the Mahdi
is 2011. There is, of course, no ques tion of such an
impor tant mat ter being kept con cealed and not talk ed
about with so lit tle time remain ing.
Bediuzzaman's words are per fect ly clear. He states
that his trea tis es are works that "every one, from a
labour er to the wis est schol ar, a mid dle school stu dent
to a phi los o pher, can eas i ly under stand." (Kastamonu
Addendum, p. 10, Rays of Light, p. 549) Some extracts
from Bediuzzaman on this sub ject read:
...The Treatise of Light proves this duty, at the most
severe, essen tial and sen si tive time, in a man ner every -
one can under stand, the deep est and most secret truths
of the Qur'an and of faith, with the most pow er ful evi -
dence. (Rays of Light, p. 748)
... The Treatise of Light can be read and under stood by
all lev els of soci e ty, such as a woman, a man, a civil
ser vant and a trades man, a schol ar and a phi los o pher…
(Rays of Light, p. 549)
To sug gest, none the less, that only spe cial peo ple
pos sessed of spe cial secrets and spe cial abil i ties can
under stand the Treatise and to so depart from the evi -
dent mean ing of Bediuzzaman's words is a grave mis -
take. In that event, every one can draw his own erro ne -
ous con clu sions from Bediuzzaman's words. Thus the
trea tis es will become works that reflect, not the true

words of Bediuzzaman him self, but of those who inter -
pret those words accord ing to their own knowl edge and
under stand ing. The ques tion of the dam ag ing effect
that such a logic could have on the Collection, writ ten
by Bediuzzaman in such a com pact and sin cere style,
is one call ing for care ful con sid er a tion.
Bediuzzaman has told, with full sup port ing
evi dence, those who imag ine him to be the
Mahdi that he is not the Mahdi
A num ber of ques tions were direct ed towards
Bediuzzaman in his own day from his dis ci ples and
those around him regard ing wheth er or not he was the
Mahdi. In fact, sim i lar ques tions had been put to other
reviv ers (mujad dids) before Bediuzzaman, and their fol -
low ers claimed that these peo ple were the Mahdi. They
also told their stu dents, with proof, that they were not
the Mahdi, and that their attrib utes were incom pat i ble
with his. They gave detailed descrip tions of when and
where the Mahdi would appear, the kind of fea tures he
would pos sess, his strug gle, and how he would cause
Islamic moral val ues to pre vail. They made state ments,
in the light of the had iths of our Prophet (saas), along the
lines of "I am not the Mahdi, because the Mahdi will be
aged such and such, appear from such and such a
place, pos sess such and such fea tures, and be a say -
y id."

Bediuzzaman gave two kinds of response to those
ask ing for his thoughts on the sub ject;
1) He made it clear that he was not the Mahdi and
wrote pages of state ments regard ing why he was not
the Mahdi aimed at those who claimed that he was.
2) He also respond ed to those who ascribed the rank
of Mahdi to him by say ing, "mis con cep tions have been
around for a long time, that can not be denied; there -
fore, I had no quar rel with those hold ing such mis con -
cep tions, and told these peo ple that "he reject ed claims
regard ing the rank of Mahdi"

(Barla Addendum, p. 162), that he had pre pared the

an error and a con fu sion to imag ine that he and the
Treatise of Light were the Mahdi (Emirdag Addendum,
p. 266).

He also stat ed that the Mahdi would be a say y id
(Exposition, Rays of Light, p. 365), that he will per form
three tasks in the worlds of pol i tics, author i ty, and reli -
gion at one and at the same time (Rays of Light, p. 456)
(Rays of Light, p. 590) (Emirdag Addendum, p. 259-
260), that the Mahdi will rean i mate the essence of
Islamic moral val ues by bear ing the titles of the cal iph
of our Prophet (saas) and the spir it u al lead er of all
Muslims (The Seal of Afformation of Hidden Things, p.
9), that he will bring peace and jus tice to all the world
(Emirdag Addendum, p. 2590 (Letters, p. 411-412), that
he will bear the title of "the Great Reformer" (Tilsimlar
Magazine, p. 168), that he will bring about Islamic Union
(Emirdag Addendum, p. 260), that he will receive the
sup port of all Islamic schol ars, say y ids descend ed from
our Prophet (saas), and all Muslims (Emirdag
Addendum, p. 260), that he will forge an alli ance with
the Christian world (The Seal of Affirmation of Hidden
Things, p. 9), that he will pray togeth er with the Prophet
Isa (Rays of Light, p. 493), and that he will install the
moral val ues of the Qur'an over all the world and
encour age all peo ple towards the true path (The Seal
of Affirmation of Hidden Things, p. 9) (Letters p. 473).
In Bediuzzaman's day, "no Islamic Union col lect ing
all Muslims under a sin gle roof had been estab lished,
and nobody bore the title of spir it u al lead er of all believ -
ers." "Justice and domin ion had not been brought to

the entire world," and "Islamic moral val ues did not pre -
vail all over the world." Nobody bore the title of Great
Leader and Ruler; nobody enjoyed "the sup port of all
Islamic schol ars, say y ids descend ed from the line of
the Prophet (saas), and all Muslims," and nobody had
per formed such a great serv ice to the faith as com mu -
ni cat ing the mes sage of the moral val ues of the Qur'an,
ded i cat ing his life to and risk ing every thing for it.
(**Suggestion: All these points, in the past 2-3 par a -
graphs, about the traits of the Mahdi could be bet ter
under stood if made as points/bul lets with in the arti cle.

He ful filled the role of reform er of his own cen tu ry in
the most honour a ble man ner. Yet, his mes sage was
com mu ni cat ed, not with force and impo si tion, but in
the face of dif fi cult phys i cal and spir it u al cir cum stan -
ces and enor mous dif fi cul ties. He did not assume the
posi tion of com mand er; on the con tra ry, he was
oppressed and spent his life as a cap tive, faced with
phys i cal troub les and dif fi cul ties. He received no wide -
spread sup port, but was rath er sub ject ed to var i ous
injus ti ces, oppressed, and spent much of his life under
such harsh cir cum stan ces as pris on and exile. He
report ed that the means and respon si bil i ties to be dis -

charged as list ed above, would belong to the Mahdi,
the reform er of the cen tu ry fol low ing his.
2. Bediuzzaman stat ed with full sup port ing evi -dence that he was not the Mahdi, but that hehad no quar rel with peo ple who har bouredsuch mis con cep tions:There were peo ple close to him in his day who held
mis con cep tions about Bediuzzaman being the Mahdi.
Indeed, Bediuzzaman added some men tions of these
atti tudes of his fol low ers to var i ous parts of his trea tis -
es.
However, as we know, pleas ing thoughts about a
per son are no proof that they actu al ly reflect the truth.
Bediuzzaman also stat ed this in his trea tis es, say ing:
"There may be peo ple who hold pleas ing ideas about
one; these have been around for a long time, that can -
not be denied, but they are in fact an error and a con -
fu sion." One extract in which Bediuzzaman sets this
out reads:
... They right ly per son al ly regard the spir it u al enti ty of
the Treatise of Light as a kind of Mahdi. Since they imag -
ine that this spir it u al enti ty has a rep re sent a tive, a spir -
it u al enti ty com ing from the stu dents of Light, and that
this spir it u al enti ty has a (do you mean the word "rep -
re sent a tive"??) who is a mere inter pret er, they some -
times give him that name (the Mahdi). This is, in fact, a
con fu sion and an error, but not one for which they are

respon si ble; mis con cep tions have been around for a
long time and can not be object ed to. Since I regard
what my broth ers do as a kind of prayer, a hope, and a
reflec tion of the pure con vic tion of the stu dentsn of
Light, I made no great objec tion. (Emirdağ Addendum,
p. 248)
Bediuzzaman states that it is some times imag ined
that as the spir it u al enti ty of the Treatise of Light and
the author of these works he may him self be the Mahdi,
but that this is an error and a con fu sion. He says that
peo ple who think along those lines make an anal y sis
with regard to describ ing the truths of faith, but that
they do not take into con sid er a tion that the Mahdi's
other two duties - "estab lish ing an Islamic Union, being
the lead er of the Islamic world, and caus ing Islamic
moral val ues to pre vail over the world, are absent from
him." Therefore, equat ing the role of Mahdi with the
Treatise on Light and with him self is mere ly a "sup po -
si tion."
Bediuzzaman has stat ed sev er al times in his works
that the Mahdi will be a say y id, and that he is not a say -
y id, but a Kurd.
In one of the proofs revealed by Bediuzzaman
demosn trat ing that he is not the Mahdi, he states that
"the Mahdi will be a say y id, but that he him self is not a
say y id." Some extracts in which Bediuzzaman open ly
express es this fact read as fol lows:

... All my broth ers will bear wit ness that I have never
accept ed the impu ta tion of being the Mahdi. Indeed, in
response to what learned peo ple in Denizli said about
wheth er Said claims to be the Mahdi, con tra ry to what
all his dis ci ples believe, Said stat ed in his objec tion, "I
am not a say y id, the Mahdi will be a say y id," and refut -
ed them. (Rays of Light, p. 365)
I know that I am not a say y id (descend ed from the line
of our Prophet (saas)). Generations are not known at
this time. Yet, that great fig ure of the end times will be
descend ed from our Prophet (saas). (Emirdağ
Addendum, p. 247-250)
Bediuzzaman also recalled one of the had iths of our
Prophet (saas) in his works - "it is incom pat i ble with
Qur'anic moral val ues for one who is a say y id to con ceal
the fact," thus mak ing it clear that what he said on this
sub ject was the truth:
Those peo ple who are not say y ids, but who say they
are, and those who are say y ids, but who say they are
not, are both sin ners, and in the same way that such
claims and deni als are for bid den … so add ing any thing
to or remov ing any thing from the had iths and Qur'an is
for bid den. (Judgements, p. 52)
Had Bediuzzaman been a say y id, there would have
been no rea son to con ceal it because being descend -

ed from the line of our Prophet (saas) is not a fea ture
requir ing to be con cealed. On the con tra ry, it is a great
honour for all Muslims. Therefore, had Bediuzzaman
been a say y id, then when he was asked, he would have
said, "Yes, I am a say y id, but I am not the Mahdi," and
he would have been honoured to say that he was
descend ed from the line of the Prophet (saas) because
admit ting that one is a say y id does not nec es sa ri ly
mean that one is the Mahdi. However, he nev er the less,
sev er al times reit er at ed that he was not a say y id.
Bediuzzaman also con firmed this sev er al times in the
trea tis es by say ing that he was "Kurdish" (Disputations,
p. 84, History of Life, p. 228, Bediuzzaman and His
Students' Trial Defence, p. 18). In the same way, had
he been of the opin ion that he was the Mahdi, he would
not have spent hun dreds of pages in works read by mil -
lions say ing the exact oppo site; he would not have said
that he did not match the attrib utes of the Mahdi nor,
with a great deal of evi dence, that this holy indi vid u al
would be com ing after him.
In addi tion, "there is no ques tion of every one who is
a say y id being the Mahdi." There are mil lions of say y -
ids in the world. Since the fact that some one is a say -
y id does not nec es sa ri ly mean that he is the Mahdi, and
every one who is a say y id can free ly and open ly admit
the fact. Moreover, Bediuzzaman did not say, "The only
thing I lack in this regard is being a say y id, had I been

a say y id I would have been the Mahdi." On the con tra -
ry, he pro vid ed lengthy descrip tions of all the attrib utes
of the Mahdi and the match less activ i ties he would
engage in, and stat ed that these had not yet come
about in his own day.
The effects of the sys tem of the Dajjal and
the Sufyan, opposed to the Mahdi, had not
been felt when Bediuzzaman was alive
The cur rent state of Islamic coun tries and of the
Muslims of the world clear ly reveals that the duties to
be dis charged by the Mahdi had not come about in
Bediuzzaman's day. The effect of the Sufyan and the
sys tem of the Dajjal were not yet fully felt in Muslim
coun tries. Religious free dom does not apply in many
coun tries of the world. When Bediuzzaman was alive,
the dif fi cul ties, troub les and oppres sion fac ing Muslims
were not that intense. This shows that, like those of the
Mahdi, the activ i ties of the Sufyan and the Dajjal had
not yet taken place at that time. It is impos si ble to speak
of the Mahdi per form ing his duties in a cli mate in which
the strug gle against the Dajjal and the Sufyan had not
yet aris en.
In addi tion, the whole Islamic world and Muslims are
today divid ed amongst them selves. In Bediuzzaman's
day, there was a uni fy ing effect on the Muslims of the
world. It is revealed in the had iths of our Prophet (saas)

that the Mahdi will have a uni fy ing effect on all Muslims.
Bediuzzaman also reports this char ac ter is tic of the
Mahdi:
…that indi vid u al will seek to ful fill that great duty with the
spir it u al assist ance of all believ ers, and the sol i dar i ty
of Islamic UUnion, and all schol ars and learned men,
and in par tic u lar with the con tri bu tion of mil lions of
devot ed say y ids descend ed from the line of our Prophet
(saas). (Emirdag Addendum, p. 260)
In this extract, Bediuzzaman is describ ing the third
duty of the Mahdi. According to this, at a time when the
moral val ues of the Qur'an are ignored, the Mahdi will
be a means where by peo ple turn back to reli gious
moral i ty; he will estab lish an islam ic Union, and all
Muslims will unite and join for ces and assist the Mahdi
in this task. Such com pre hen sive alli ance and sup port,
in which all Muslims will be includ ed, had not yet come
about in Bediuzzaman's day. As revealed by
Bediuzzaman, the spir it u al assist ance from this wide
com mu ni ty will only emerge in the end times with the
Mahdi, and will play a major role in Islamic moral val -
ues com ing to rule the world.
Bediuzzaman said that the accounts in the trea tis es
were suf fi cient con cern ing all mat ters.
Bediuzzaman, many times, assert ed dur ing his life -
time the truth of every thing he had writ ten, say ing, "I
also abide by these as a stu dent of the Treatise of

Light." Each trea tise is a book pub lished in many edi -
tions. If, there fore, he open ly states, "I know I am not
a say y id" in his works, then it would be a vile insult and
slan der against Bediuzzaman Said Nursi for cer tain
peo ple to say: "Bediuzzaman's state ments are untrue;
he called us one day and said that he was both a say -
y id and the Mahdi." Because this would be equiv a lent
to claim ing that what such a wor thy and moral indi vid -
u al as Bediuzzaman had writ ten was a "lie." A claim to
the effect that, con tra ry to what he wrote over hun dreds
of pages, Bediuzzaman "only told two or three peo ple
that what he had writ ten was a lie," is a grave impu ta -
tion against those who make such claims. No claim to
the effect that "Bediuzzaman deceived mil lions of peo -
ple, but only told a hand ful of peo ple the truth," is com -
plete ly unac cept a ble.
On the other hand, it is suf fi cient for Bediuzzaman
to say, "I am not the Mahdi" to put the record straight.
It is non sen si cal to main tain that such a holy per son -
age "wrote detailed and com pre hen sive lies over hun -
dreds of pages, and what he wrote is all a decep tion."
Such a grave insult is unac cept a ble, even if made out
of love.
It is com plete ly out of the ques tion for a reviv er of
such deep faith as Bediuzzaman to have writ ten the
exact oppo site of what he thought and believed in his
works. Therefore, it is a grave slan der, albe it made out

of love for Bediuzzaman, albe it with the very best of
inten tions, to make such a claim years after his death.
An atti tude that accus es him of lying and main tains that
he spent hun dreds of pages deceiv ing the pub lic can -
not be accept ed by any con science.
In addi tion, var i ous unre al is tic claims regard ing the
Prophet Isa (as) may also be made in order to sup port
this ground less claim. As we know, we are told in the
had iths of our Prophet (saas) that the Prophet Isa will
return to Earth dur ing the time of the Mahdi. The Prophet
Isa and the Mahdi will pray togeth er, with the Mahdi act -
ing as imam, and they will rule togeth er on Earth for
seven years. However, none of these devel op ments
took place while Bediuzzaman was alive. Bediuzzaman
did not live along side the Prophet Isa (as). Various
attempts are made to explain this any way. Unfounded
ideas, such as that the Prophet Isa (as) will return only
in spir it, or that he lived, died and was bur ied dur ing
Bediuzzaman's life time, are put for ward. The fact is,
how e ver, that Bediuzzaman has made it crys tal clear,
and many times, in his works that the Prophet Isa (as)
will return to Earth as "a per son," with his human body.
He also stat ed that the Prophet Isa (as) would forge an
alli ance with Christian lead ers and fight against and
intel lec tu al ly neu tral ise the Dajjal. In one of these state -
ments, Bediuzzaman says that the Prophet Isa will be a
per son, not a spir it u al enti ty:

... THE PROPHET ISA (as), who is in the world of the
heav ens WITH HIS PHYSICAL BODY, will assume the
lead er ship of the true.... (Letters, p. 60)
In addi tion, in those extracts in which Bediuzzaman
refers to the Prophet Isa's (as) strug gle against the
Dajjal, he speaks not of a strug gle between one spir it -
u al enti ty and anoth er, but of one between the true per -
son of the Prophet Isa (as) and the per son age of the
Dajjal:
... Those whose faith is weak find it hard to believe that
"the Prophet Isa (as) will come and labour with the law
of Islam and will slay the Dajjal," as is report ed in a had -
ith of abso lute trust wor thi ness. If the truth of that is set
out, no room for doubt will remain. (Letters, p. 58-59)
In anoth er extract, Bediuzzaman says that the influ -
ence of the Dajjal can only be done away with by a
proph et pos sessed of the power of mir a cles, and once
again states that the Prophet Isa (as) will be a per son
with the attrib ute of work ing mir a cles, and not a spir it -
u al enti ty:
... he can only be A PERSON pos sessed of mar vels and
mir a cles and accept ed by the peo ple; THAT PERSON is
THE PROPHET ISA (as), the most con cerned and the
proph et of most peo ple..... (Rays of Light, p. 463)
Such claims as these, point ing to pri vate con ver sa -

tions as evi dence, despite Bediuzzaman's une quiv o -
cal words regard ing the com ing of the Mahdi and the
Prophet Isa (as), are very dan ger ous inter ven tions that
may cast doubt on all the trea tis es writ ten by such a
val u a ble reform er. How valid can these be if many peo -
ple come up with very dif fer ent claims, say ing,
"Bediuzzaman Said Nursi may have said this here, but
this is only a strat a gem, a lie; he told us the truth?" Not
long after this, any thing at all will be able to be said
about any mat ter in the Treatise of Light, and
Bediuzzaman's works will increas ing ly lose their true
mean ing and wis dom. The only way to fore stall this dan -
ger is to accept the words of such a wor thy Islamic
schol ar, writ ten and con firmed by him self, at their face
value. Indeed, in his works, Bediuzzaman has recalled
that the trea tis es con tain the most truth ful expo si tion
of this sub ject, as they do of all oth ers, and has stat ed
that when some one reads what is writ ten in the trea -
tis es they can acquire the most accu rate infor ma tion,
just as if they were speak ing to him in per son.
Each book in the Treatise of Light is a Said. Whichever
book you look at, you can ben e fit from it ten times more
than by speak ing to me in per son, and you will real ly
have spo ken to me in truth. The Treatise of Light leaves
no need for me. (Emirdağ Addendum, p. 159)
… because he says: "If any one wish es to speak with

me, about the here aft er, or the Treatise of Light, the
Treatise of Light has left no need for me at all. The mil -
lions of cop ies are as much use as ten Saids… If it
regards serv ing or dis sem i nat ing the Treatise of Light,
it is enough for true fol low ers who serve me and my
spir it u al chil dren and broth ers to deal with my coun ter -
part, there is no need for me… (Emirdağ Addendum-2,
p. 214)
Bediuzzaman also devot ed space in his works to the
words of his stu dents who expressed the same fact.
Some of these read:
O teach ers and peo ple of the heart! You can find the
answers to your ques tions in the Treatise of Light. One
of those who, as a bless ing from Allah, know secret,
invis i ble truth, asks some one as help less as me about
the Mahdi, "When will he come?" He knows noth ing of
the Mahdi and does not know who the Dabbetu'l Arz is.
There is a descrip tion of this in the trea tis es. Look for
the answer to every dif fi cult ques tion in the trea tis es,
and you will find it there. (Mustafa Hulusi, Barla
Addendum, p. 143)
…On this sub ject, may I sub mit that, in some times gen -
er ous ly read ing to a dis ci ple from the Treatise of Light,
our teach er Bediuzzaman would not explain it, say ing:
"The Treastise of Light explains mat ters of faith suf fi -

cient ly and deep ly. The teach er of the Treatise of Light
is the Treatise of light itself. The Treatise of Light leaves
no need to study with any one else." (Extracts, p. 772)
THE COMING OF THE MAHDI
Was Imparted by Our Prophet (saas) Himself
There are a great many had iths of our Prophet (saas)
regard ing the Mahdi that are gen er al ly regard ed as reli -
a ble. Our Prophet (saas) impart ed that this is good news
for Muslims in the words of one gad ith, "LEARN OF THE
MAHDI. He is from the Quraysh and is one from my
house." (Book of Sayings of the Portents of the End
Times, p. 13) In anoth er had ith, our Prophet (saas) says:
"The Mahdi will appear, EVERYONE WILL SPEAK ONLY
OF HIM, drink of his love and NOBODY WILL SPEAK
OF ANYTHING ELSE" (Book of Sayings of the Portents
of the End Times, p. 33), stat ing that every one will speak
of this holy indi vid u al when he appears.
Bediuzzaman Also Imparted the Glad
Tidings of the Mahdi
The hon esty, open ness, and clar i ty in Bediuzzaman's
nature and which dom i nat ed his life are reflect ed in his
works, the Treatise of Light.
Bediuzzaman Said Nursi devot ed con sid er a ble
space to the Mahdi in his works, pro vid ing a detailed

descrip tion of the sub ject over hun dreds of pages. It is
quite clear that had he thought that the sub ject need -
ed to be con cealed, or if he thought there was no need
to read about it, he would not have includ ed all these
state ments in the trea tis es.
Bediuzzaman made the mat ter pub lic with his state -
ments, and open ly stat ed that it was not a prob lem
need ing to be con cealed. Indeed, the fact that the trea -
tis es have been read by mil lions of peo ple over many
years clear ly dem on strates that it is a sub ject placed
in the open, rath er than hid den.
The Treatise of Light is a most val u a ble col lec tion of
works in which Bediuzzaman Said Nursi, the reviv er
(mujad did) of the last cen tu ry, expressed the truths
emerg ing from his heart and tongue.
Bediuzzaman open ly stat ed that he was not the Mahdi
(Emirdağ Addendum, p. 266),
That the Mahdi would come a cen tu ry after him
(Kastamonu Addendum, p. 57),
That he was a pri vate sol dier and mem ber of the van -
guard of the Mahdi (Barla Addendum, p. 162),
That he had pre pared the way for the Mahdi with his
books and work (The Seal of Affirmation of Hidden
things, p. 189),

And that it was an error and a con du sion for him and
the Treatise of Light to be equat ed with the Mahdi

CONCLUSION
Throughout this book, we have exam ined what the
had iths of our Prophet Muhammed (saas) say about the
por tents of the Mahdi's com ing, a man who will appear
in the End Times hav ing par tic u lar char ac ter is tics that
will ena ble him to be recog nized.
In these had iths, our Prophet (saas) pro vides much
infor ma tion about the Mahdi's moral val ues and phys -
i cal appear ance. For exam ple, the Mahdi's moral val ues
will resem ble those of our Prophet's (saas), who will
proise him for his fear and respect of Allah and prop er
mor als. He also states that the Mahdi is a most val u a -
ble indi vid u al who help peo ple attain sal va tion in this
world and in the Hereafter, and that when he appears
peo ple will "fol low him, even by crawl ing over the
snow":
Ibn Abi Sayba and Naim ibn Hammad recount this in
the Fitan, as do Ibn Majah and Abu Naim from Ibn
Mas'ud. He said: "He (the Mahdi) will rule the world
and fill Earth, which was pre vi ous ly filled with oppres -
sion and cru el ty, with jus tice. Whoever is liv ing at
that time, let him/her come to the Mahdi and join him,

even by crawl ing over the snow, because he is the
Mahdi. (Al-Suyuti, Portents of the Mahdi, p. 14)
The peri od in which we are now liv ing is the time
when this his tor i cal event, the glad tid ings of which are
impart ed by our Prophet (saas), will soon take place.
All Muslims who know this and want the honor of being
along side the Mahdi when he appears must read this
infor ma tion with great care, seek every means of prop -
er ly rec og ni zing this await ed indi vid u al, and use it as a
guide to recog nize him.
Muslims have a major respon si bil i ty for pre par ing
the ground for and assist ing this await ed indi vid u al,
who will be a means where by Islam returns to its true
essence, the Qur'an's moral val ues will pre vail, and who
will estab lish great unity among Muslims. Being close
to the Mahdi in order to sup port and assist him in his
aus pi cious activ i ties direct ed toward all peo ple is a
great bless ing and honor.

THE DECEPTION OF EVOLUTION
Darwinism, in other words the the o ry of evo lu tion,
was put for ward with the aim of deny ing the fact of cre -
a tion, but is in truth noth ing but fail ed, unsci en tif ic non -
sense. This the o ry, which claims that life emerged by
chance from inan i mate mat ter, was inval i dat ed by the
sci en tif ic evi dence of mirac u lous order in the uni verse
and in liv ing things. In this way, sci ence con firmed the
fact that Allah cre at ed the uni verse and the liv ing things
in it. The prop a gan da car ried out today in order to keep
the the o ry of evo lu tion alive is based sole ly on the dis -
tor tion of the sci en tif ic facts, biased inter pre ta tion, and
lies and false hoods dis guised as sci ence.
Yet this prop a gan da can not con ceal the truth. The
fact that the the o ry of evo lu tion is the great est decep -
tion in the his to ry of sci ence has been expressed more
and more in the sci en tif ic world over the last 20-30
years. Research car ried out after the 1980s in par tic u -
lar has revealed that the claims of Darwinism are total -
ly unfound ed, some thing that has been stat ed by a large
num ber of sci en tists. In the United States in par tic u lar,
many sci en tists from such dif fer ent fields as biol o gy,
bio chem is try and pale on tol o gy recog nize the inva lid i -
ty of Darwinism and employ the fact of cre a tion to
account for the ori gin of life.

We have exam ined the col lapse of the the o ry of evo -
lu tion and the proofs of cre a tion in great sci en tif ic detail
in many of our works, and are still con tin u ing to do so.
Given the enor mous impor tance of this sub ject, it will be
of great ben e fit to sum ma rize it here.
The Scientific Collapse of DarwinismAlthough this doc trine goes back as far as ancient
Greece, the the o ry of evo lu tion was advanced exten -
sive ly in the nine teenth cen tu ry. The most impor tant
devel op ment that made it the top topic of the world of
sci ence was Charles Darwin's The Origin of Species,
pub lished in 1859. In this book, he denied that Allah
cre at ed dif fer ent liv ing spe cies on Earth sep a rate ly, for
he claimed that all liv ing beings had a com mon ances -
tor and had diver si fied over time through small chan -
ges. Darwin's the o ry was not based on any con crete
sci en tif ic find ing; as he also accept ed, it was just an
"assump tion." Moreover, as Darwin con fessed in the
long chap ter of his book titled "Difficulties on Theory,"
the the o ry fail ed in the face of many crit i cal ques tions.
Darwin invest ed all of his hopes in new sci en tif ic dis -
cov er ies, which he expect ed to solve these dif fi cul ties.
However, con tra ry to his expec ta tions, sci en tif ic find -
ings expand ed the dimen sions of these dif fi cul ties. The
defeat of Darwinism in the face of sci ence can be
reviewed under three basic top ics:

1) The the o ry can not explain how life orig i nat ed on
Earth.
2) No sci en tif ic find ing shows that the "evo lu tion a ry
mech a nisms" pro posed by the the o ry have any evo lu -
tion a ry power at all.
3) The fos sil record proves the exact oppo site of what
the the o ry sug gests.
In this sec tion, we will exam ine these three basic
points in gen er al out lines:
The First Insurmountable Step:The Origin of LifeThe the o ry of evo lu tion pos its that all liv ing spe cies
evolved from a sin gle liv ing cell that emerged on the
prim i tive Earth 3.8 bil lion years ago. How a sin gle cell
could gen er ate mil lions of com plex liv ing spe cies and,
if such an evo lu tion real ly occurred, why tra ces of it
can not be observed in the fos sil record are some of the
ques tions that the the o ry can not answer. However, first
and fore most, we need to ask: How did this "first cell"
orig i nate?
Since the the o ry of evo lu tion denies cre a tion and any
kind of super nat u ral inter ven tion, it main tains that the
"first cell" orig i nat ed coin ci den tal ly with in the laws of
nature, with out any design, plan or arrange ment.
According to the the o ry, inan i mate mat ter must have
pro duced a liv ing cell as a result of coin ci den ces. Such

a claim, how e ver, is incon sist ent with the most unas -
sail a ble rules of biol o gy.
"Life Comes From Life"In his book, Darwin never referred to the ori gin of life.
The prim i tive under stand ing of sci ence in his time rest -
ed on the assump tion that liv ing beings had a very sim -
ple struc ture. Since medi e val times, spon ta ne ous gen -
er a tion, which asserts that non-liv ing mate ri als came
togeth er to form liv ing organ isms, had been wide ly
accept ed. It was com mon ly believed that insects came
into being from food left o vers, and mice from wheat.
Interesting exper i ments were con duct ed to prove this
the o ry. Some wheat was placed on a dirty piece of
cloth, and it was believed that mice would orig i nate
from it after a while.
Similarly, mag gots devel op ing in rot ting meat was
assumed to be evi dence of spon ta ne ous gen er a tion.
However, it was later under stood that worms did not
appear on meat spon ta ne ous ly, but were car ried there
by flies in the form of lar vae, invis i ble to the naked eye.
Even when Darwin wrote The Origin of Species, the
belief that bac te ria could come into exis tence from non-
liv ing mat ter was wide ly accept ed in the world of sci -
ence.
However, five years after the pub li ca tion of Darwin's
book, Louis Pasteur announced his results after long

stud ies and exper i ments, that dis proved spon ta ne ous
gen er a tion, a cor ner stone of Darwin's the o ry. In his tri -
um phal lec ture at the Sorbonne in 1864, Pasteur said:
"Never will the doc trine of spon ta ne ous gen er a tion
recov er from the mor tal blow struck by this sim ple
exper i ment."1
For a long time, advo cates of the the o ry of evo lu tion
resist ed these find ings. However, as the devel op ment
of sci ence unrav eled the com plex struc ture of the cell
of a liv ing being, the idea that life could come into being
coin ci den tal ly faced an even great er impasse.
Inconclusive Efforts of the Twentieth CenturyThe first evo lu tion ist who took up the sub ject of the
ori gin of life in the twen ti eth cen tu ry was the renowned
Russian biol o gist Alexander Oparin. With var i ous the -
ses he advanced in the 1930s, he tried to prove that a
liv ing cell could orig i nate by coin ci dence. These stud -
ies, how e ver, were doomed to fail ure, and Oparin had
to make the fol low ing con fes sion:
Unfortunately, how e ver, the prob lem of the ori gin of
the cell is per haps the most obscure point in the whole
study of the evo lu tion of organ isms.2
Evolutionist fol low ers of Oparin tried to carry out
exper i ments to solve this prob lem. The best known
exper i ment was car ried out by the American chem ist
Stanley Miller in 1953. Combining the gases he alleged

to have exist ed in the pri mor di al Earth's atmos phere in
an exper i ment set-up, and add ing ener gy to the mix -
ture, Miller syn the sized sev er al organ ic mol e cu les
(amino acids) present in the struc ture of pro teins.
Barely a few years had passed before it was revealed
that this exper i ment, which was then pre sent ed as an
impor tant step in the name of evo lu tion, was invalid,
for the atmos phere used in the exper i ment was very
dif fer ent from the real Earth con di tions.3
After a long silence, Miller con fessed that the atmos -
phere medi um he used was unre al is tic.4
All the evo lu tion ists' efforts through out the twen ti -
eth cen tu ry to explain the ori gin of life ended in fail ure.
The geo chem ist Jeffrey Bada, from the San Diego
Scripps Institute accepts this fact in an arti cle pub lished
in Earth mag a zine in 1998:
Today as we leave the twen ti eth cen tu ry, we still face
the big gest unsolved prob lem that we had when we
entered the twen ti eth cen tu ry: How did life orig i nate
on Earth?5
The Complex Structure of Life The pri ma ry rea son why the the o ry of evo lu tion ended
up in such a great impasse regard ing the ori gin of life is
that even those liv ing organ isms deemed to be the sim -
plest have incred i bly com plex struc tures. The cell of a
liv ing thing is more com plex than all of our man-made

tech no log i cal pro ducts. Today, even in the most devel -
oped lab o ra to ries of the world, a liv ing cell can not be
pro duced by bring ing organ ic chem i cals togeth er.
The con di tions required for the for ma tion of a cell
are too great in quan ti ty to be explained away by coin -
ci den ces. The prob a bil i ty of pro teins, the build ing
blocks of a cell, being syn the sized coin ci den tal ly, is 1
in 10950 for an aver age pro tein made up of 500 amino
acids. In math e mat ics, a prob a bil i ty small er than 1 over
1050 is con sid ered to be impos si ble in prac ti cal terms.
The DNA mol e cule, which is locat ed in the nucle us of
a cell and which stores genet ic infor ma tion, is an incred -
i ble data bank. If the infor ma tion coded in DNA were
writ ten down, it would make a giant library con sist ing of
an esti mat ed 900 vol umes of ency clo pe di as con sist -
ing of 500 pages each.
A very inter est ing dilem ma emer ges at this point:
DNA can rep li cate itself only with the help of some spe -
cial ized pro teins (enzymes). However, the syn the sis of
these enzymes can be real ized only by the infor ma tion
coded in DNA. As they both depend on each other, they
have to exist at the same time for rep li ca tion. This brings
the sce nar io that life orig i nat ed by itself to a dead lock.
Prof. Leslie Orgel, an evo lu tion ist of repute from the
University of San Diego, California, con fess es this fact
in the September 1994 issue of the Scientific American
mag a zine:

It is extreme ly improb a ble that pro teins and nucle ic
acids, both of which are struc tur al ly com plex, arose
spon ta ne ous ly in the same place at the same time.
Yet it also seems impos si ble to have one with out the
other. And so, at first glance, one might have to con -
clude that life could never, in fact, have orig i nat ed
by chem i cal means.6
No doubt, if it is impos si ble for life to have orig i nat -
ed from nat u ral caus es, then it has to be accept ed that
life was "cre at ed" in a super nat u ral way. This fact
explic it ly inval i dates the the o ry of evo lu tion, whose main
pur pose is to deny cre a tion.
Imaginary Mechanism of Evolution The sec ond impor tant point that negates Darwin's
the o ry is that both con cepts put for ward by the the o ry
as "evo lu tion a ry mech a nisms" were under stood to
have, in real i ty, no evo lu tion a ry power.
Darwin based his evo lu tion alle ga tion entire ly on the
mech a nism of "nat u ral selec tion." The impor tance he
placed on this mech a nism was evi dent in the name of
his book: The Origin of Species, By Means of Natural
Selection…
Natural selec tion holds that those liv ing things that
are strong er and more suit ed to the nat u ral con di tions
of their hab i tats will sur vive in the strug gle for life. For
exam ple, in a deer herd under the threat of attack by

wild ani mals, those that can run fast er will sur vive.
Therefore, the deer herd will be com prised of fast er and
strong er indi vid u als. However, unques tion a bly, this
mech a nism will not cause deer to evolve and trans form
them selves into anoth er liv ing spe cies, for instance,
hors es.
Therefore, the mech a nism of nat u ral selec tion has
no evo lu tion a ry power. Darwin was also aware of this
fact and had to state this in his book The Origin of
Species:
Natural selec tion can do noth ing until favour a ble indi -
vid u al dif fer en ces or var i a tions occur.7
Lamarck's ImpactSo, how could these "favor a ble var i a tions" occur?
Darwin tried to answer this ques tion from the stand -
point of the prim i tive under stand ing of sci ence at that
time. According to the French biol o gist Chevalier de
Lamarck (1744-1829), who lived before Darwin, liv ing
crea tures passed on the traits they acquired dur ing their
life time to the next gen er a tion. He assert ed that these
traits, which accu mu lat ed from one gen er a tion to anoth -
er, caused new spe cies to be formed. For instance, he
claimed that giraffes evolved from ante lopes; as they
strug gled to eat the leaves of high trees, their necks
were extend ed from gen er a tion to gen er a tion.
Darwin also gave sim i lar exam ples. In his book The

Origin of Species, for instance, he said that some bears
going into water to find food trans formed them selves
into whales over time.8
However, the laws of inher it ance dis cov ered by
Gregor Mendel (1822-84) and ver i fied by the sci ence
of genet ics, which flour ished in the twen ti eth cen tu ry,
utter ly demol ished the leg end that acquired traits were
passed on to sub se quent gen er a tions. Thus, nat u ral
selec tion fell out of favor as an evo lu tion a ry mech a -
nism.
Neo-Darwinism and MutationsIn order to find a solu tion, Darwinists advanced the
"Modern Synthetic Theory," or as it is more com mon -
ly known, Neo-Darwinism, at the end of the 1930s. Neo-
Darwinism added muta tions, which are dis tor tions
formed in the genes of liv ing beings due to such exter -
nal fac tors as radi a tion or rep li ca tion errors, as the
"cause of favor a ble var i a tions" in addi tion to nat u ral
muta tion.
Today, the model that stands for evo lu tion in the
world is Neo-Darwinism. The the o ry main tains that mil -
lions of liv ing beings formed as a result of a proc ess
where by numer ous com plex organs of these organ isms
(e.g., ears, eyes, lungs, and wings) under went "muta -
tions," that is, genet ic dis or ders. Yet, there is an out -

Mutations do not cause liv ing beings to devel op; on the
con tra ry, they are always harm ful.
The rea son for this is very sim ple: DNA has a very
com plex struc ture, and ran dom effects can only harm
it. The American genet i cist B. G. Ranganathan explains
this as fol lows:
First, gen u ine muta tions are very rare in nature.
Secondly, most muta tions are harm ful since they are
ran dom, rath er than order ly chan ges in the struc ture
of genes; any ran dom change in a high ly ordered
sys tem will be for the worse, not for the bet ter. For
exam ple, if an earth quake were to shake a high ly
ordered struc ture such as a build ing, there would be
a ran dom change in the frame work of the build ing
which, in all prob a bil i ty, would not be an improve -
ment.9
Not sur pris ing ly, no muta tion exam ple, which is use -
ful, that is, which is observed to devel op the genet ic
code, has been observed so far. All muta tions have
proved to be harm ful. It was under stood that muta tion,
which is pre sent ed as an "evo lu tion a ry mech a nism," is
actu al ly a genet ic occur rence that harms liv ing things,
and leaves them dis a bled. (The most com mon effect of
muta tion on human beings is can cer.) Of course, a
destruc tive mech a nism can not be an "evo lu tion a ry
mech a nism." Natural selec tion, on the other hand, "can
do noth ing by itself," as Darwin also accept ed. This fact

shows us that there is no "evo lu tion a ry mech a nism" in
nature. Since no evo lu tion a ry mech a nism exists, no
such any imag i nary proc ess called "evo lu tion" could
have taken place.
The Fossil Record: No Sign of IntermediateFormsThe clear est evi dence that the sce nar io sug gest ed
by the the o ry of evo lu tion did not take place is the fos -
sil record.
According to this the o ry, every liv ing spe cies has
sprung from a pred e ces sor. A pre vi ous ly exist ing spe -
cies turned into some thing else over time and all spe -
cies have come into being in this way. In other words,
this trans for ma tion pro ceeds grad u al ly over mil lions of
years.
Had this been the case, numer ous inter me di a ry spe -
cies should have exist ed and lived with in this long trans -
for ma tion peri od.
For instance, some half-fish/half-rep tiles should have
lived in the past which had acquired some rep til i an traits
in addi tion to the fish traits they already had. Or there
should have exist ed some rep tile-birds, which acquired
some bird traits in addi tion to the rep til i an traits they
already had. Since these would be in a tran si tion al
phase, they should be dis a bled, defective, crip pled liv -
ing beings. Evolutionists refer to these imag i nary crea -

tures, which they believe to have lived in the past, as
"tran si tion al forms."
If such ani mals ever real ly exist ed, there should be
mil lions and even bil lions of them in num ber and vari -
e ty. More impor tant ly, the remains of these strange
crea tures should be present in the fos sil record. In The
Origin of Species, Darwin explained:
If my the o ry be true, num ber less inter me di ate vari e -
ties, link ing most close ly all of the spe cies of the
same group togeth er must assur ed ly have exist ed...
Consequently, evi dence of their former exis tence
could be found only amongst fos sil remains.10
Darwin's Hopes ShatteredHowever, although evo lu tion ists have been mak ing
stren u ous efforts to find fos sils since the mid dle of the
nine teenth cen tu ry all over the world, no tran si tion al
forms have yet been uncov ered. All of the fos sils, con -
tra ry to the evo lu tion ists' expec ta tions, show that life
appeared on Earth all of a sud den and fully-formed.
One famous British pale on tol o gist, Derek V. Ager,
admits this fact, even though he is an evo lu tion ist:
The point emer ges that if we exam ine the fos sil
record in detail, wheth er at the level of orders or of
spe cies, we find – over and over again – not grad u -
al evo lu tion, but the sud den explo sion of one group
at the expense of anoth er.11

This means that in the fos sil record, all liv ing spe cies
sud den ly emerge as fully formed, with out any inter me -
di ate forms in between. This is just the oppo site of
Darwin's assump tions. Also, this is very strong evi dence
that all liv ing things are cre at ed. The only expla na tion of
a liv ing spe cies emerg ing sud den ly and com plete in
every detail with out any evo lu tion a ry ances tor is that it
was cre at ed. This fact is admit ted also by the wide ly
known evo lu tion ist biol o gist Douglas Futuyma:
Creation and evo lu tion, between them, exhaust the
pos si ble expla na tions for the ori gin of liv ing things.
Organisms either appeared on the earth fully devel -
oped or they did not. If they did not, they must have
devel oped from pre-exist ing spe cies by some proc -
ess of mod i fi ca tion. If they did appear in a fully devel -
oped state, they must indeed have been cre at ed by
some omnip o tent intel li gence.12
Fossils show that liv ing beings emerged fully devel -
oped and in a per fect state on the Earth. That means
that "the ori gin of spe cies," con tra ry to Darwin's sup -
po si tion, is not evo lu tion, but cre a tion.
The Tale of Human EvolutionThe sub ject most often brought up by advo cates of
the the o ry of evo lu tion is the sub ject of the ori gin of
man. The Darwinist claim holds that mod ern man
evolved from ape-like crea tures. During this alleged

evo lu tion a ry proc ess, which is sup posed to have start -
ed 4-5 mil lion years ago, some "tran si tion al forms"
between mod ern man and his ances tors are sup posed
to have exist ed. According to this com plete ly imag i -
nary sce nar io, four basic "cat e go ries" are list ed:
1. Australopithecus
2. Homo habi lis
3. Homo erec tus
4. Homo sapi ens
Evolutionists call man's so-called first ape-like
ances tors Australopithecus, which means "South
African ape." These liv ing beings are actu al ly noth ing
but an old ape spe cies that has become extinct.
Extensive research done on var i ous Australopithecus
spec i mens by two world famous anat o mists from
England and the USA, name ly, Lord Solly Zuckerman
and Prof. Charles Oxnard, shows that these apes
belonged to an ordi nary ape spe cies that became
extinct and bore no resem blance to humans.13
Evolutionists clas si fy the next stage of human evo -
lu tion as "homo," that is "man." According to their
claim, the liv ing beings in the Homo series are more
devel oped than Australopithecus. Evolutionists devise
a fan ci ful evo lu tion scheme by arrang ing dif fer ent fos -
sils of these crea tures in a par tic u lar order. This scheme
is imag i nary because it has never been proved that
there is an evo lu tion a ry rela tion between these dif fer ent

class es. Ernst Mayr, one of the twen ti eth cen tu ry's most
impor tant evo lu tion ists, con tends in his book One Long
Argument that "par tic u lar ly his tor i cal [puz zles] such as
the ori gin of life or of Homo sapi ens, are extreme ly dif -
fi cult and may even resist a final, sat is fy ing expla na -
tion."14
By out lin ing the link chain as Australopithecus >
Homo habi lis > Homo erec tus > Homo sapi ens, evo lu -
tion ists imply that each of these spe cies is one anoth -
er's ances tor. However, recent find ings of pale o an thro -
pol o gists have revealed that Australopithecus, Homo
habi lis, and Homo erec tus lived at dif fer ent parts of the
world at the same time.15
Moreover, a cer tain seg ment of humans clas si fied
as Homo erec tus have lived up until very mod ern times.
Homo sapi ens nean dar thal en sis and Homo sapi ens
sapi ens (mod ern man) co-exist ed in the same region.16
This sit u a tion appar ent ly indi cates the inva lid i ty of
the claim that they are ances tors of one anoth er.
Stephen Jay Gould explained this dead lock of the the -
o ry of evo lu tion although he was him self one of the lead -
ing advo cates of evo lu tion in the twen ti eth cen tu ry:
What has become of our lad der if there are three
coex ist ing lin e a ges of hom i nids (A. afri ca nus, the robust
aus tra lop i the ci nes, and H. habi lis), none clear ly derived
from anoth er? Moreover, none of the three dis play any
evo lu tion a ry trends dur ing their ten ure on earth.17

Put brief ly, the sce nar io of human evo lu tion, which is
"upheld" with the help of var i ous draw ings of some "half
ape, half human" crea tures appear ing in the media and
course books, that is, frank ly, by means of prop a gan -
da, is noth ing but a tale with no sci en tif ic foun da tion.
Lord Solly Zuckerman, one of the most famous and
respect ed sci en tists in the U.K., who car ried out
research on this sub ject for years and stud ied
Australopithecus fos sils for 15 years, final ly con clud -
ed, despite being an evo lu tion ist him self, that there is,
in fact, no such fam i ly tree branch ing out from ape-like
crea tures to man.
Zuckerman also made an inter est ing "spec trum of
sci ence" ran ging from those he con sid ered sci en tif ic
to those he con sid ered unsci en tif ic. According to
Zuckerman's spec trum, the most "sci en tif ic"—that is,
depend ing on con crete data—fields of sci ence are
chem is try and phys ics. After them come the bio log i cal
sci en ces and then the social sci en ces. At the far end
of the spec trum, which is the part con sid ered to be
most "unsci en tif ic," are "extra-sen so ry per cep tion"—
con cepts such as telep a thy and sixth sense—and final -
ly "human evo lu tion." Zuckerman explains his rea son -
ing:
We then move right off the reg is ter of objec tive truth
into those fields of pre sumed bio log i cal sci ence, like
extra sen so ry per cep tion or the inter pre ta tion of

ist] any thing is pos si ble – and where the ardent
believ er [in evo lu tion] is some times able to believe

The tale of human evo lu tion boils down to noth ing
but the prej u diced inter pre ta tions of some fos sils
unearthed by cer tain peo ple, who blind ly adhere to their
the o ry.
Darwinian Formula!Besides all the tech ni cal evi dence we have dealt with
so far, let us now for once, exam ine what kind of a
super sti tion the evo lu tion ists have with an exam ple so
sim ple as to be under stood even by chil dren:
The the o ry of evo lu tion asserts that life is formed by
chance. According to this claim, life less and uncon -
scious atoms came togeth er to form the cell and then
they some how formed other liv ing things, includ ing
man. Let us think about that. When we bring togeth -
er the ele ments that are the build ing-blocks of life
such as car bon, phos pho rus, nitro gen and potas si -
um, only a heap is formed. No mat ter what treat -
ments it under goes, this atom ic heap can not form
even a sin gle liv ing being. If you like, let us for mu -
late an "exper i ment" on this sub ject and let us exam -
ine on the behalf of evo lu tion ists what they real ly
claim with out pro noun cing loud ly under the name

Let evo lu tion ists put plen ty of mate ri als present in
the com po si tion of liv ing things such as phos pho rus,
nitro gen, car bon, oxy gen, iron, and mag ne si um into big
bar rels. Moreover, let them add in these bar rels any
mate ri al that does not exist under nor mal con di tions,
but they think as nec es sa ry. Let them add in this mix -
ture as many amino acids and as many pro teins—a sin -
gle one of which has a for ma tion prob a bil i ty of 10-950—
as they like. Let them expose these mix tures to as much
heat and mois ture as they like. Let them stir these with
what ev er tech no log i cal ly devel oped device they like.
Let them put the fore most sci en tists beside these bar -
rels. Let these experts wait in turn beside these bar rels
for bil lions, and even tril lions of years. Let them be free
to use all kinds of con di tions they believe to be nec es -
sa ry for a human's for ma tion. No mat ter what they do,
they can not pro duce from these bar rels a human, say

elec tron micro scope. They can not pro duce giraffes,
lions, bees, cana ries, hors es, dol phins, roses, orchids,
lil ies, car na tions, banan as, oran ges, apples, dates,
toma toes, mel ons, water mel ons, figs, oliv es, grapes,
peach es, pea fowls, pheas ants, mul ti col oured but ter -
flies, or mil lions of other liv ing beings such as these.
Indeed, they could not obtain even a sin gle cell of any

Briefly, uncon scious atoms can not form the cell by
com ing togeth er. They can not take a new deci sion and
divide this cell into two, then take other deci sions and
cre ate the pro fes sors who first invent the elec tron
micro scope and then exam ine their own cell struc ture
under that micro scope. Matter is an uncon scious, life -
less heap, and it comes to life with Allah's supe ri or cre -
a tion.
The the o ry of evo lu tion, which claims the oppo site,
is a total fal la cy com plete ly con tra ry to rea son. Thinking
even a lit tle bit on the claims of evo lu tion ists dis clos es
this real i ty, just as in the above exam ple.
Technology in the Eye and the EarAnother sub ject that remains unans wered byevo lu tion a ry the o ry is the excel lent qual i ty ofper cep tion in the eye and the ear. Before pass ing on to the sub ject of the eye, let us
brief ly answer the ques tion of how we see. Light rays
com ing from an object fall oppo site ly on the eye's ret -
i na. Here, these light rays are trans mit ted into elec tric
sig nals by cells and reach a tiny spot at the back of the
brain, the "cen ter of vision." These elec tric sig nals are
per ceived in this cen ter as an image after a series of
proc ess es. With this tech ni cal back ground, let us do
some think ing.
The brain is insu lat ed from light. That means that its

inside is com plete ly dark, and that no light reach es the
place where it is locat ed. Thus, the "cen ter of vision"
is never touched by light and may even be the dark est
place you have ever known. However, you observe a
lumi nous, bright world in this pitch dark ness.
The image formed in the eye is so sharp and dis tinct
that even the tech nol o gy of the twen ti eth cen tu ry has
not been able to attain it. For instance, look at the book
you are read ing, your hands with which you are hold ing
it, and then lift your head and look around you. Have
you ever seen such a sharp and dis tinct image as this
one at any other place? Even the most devel oped tel -
e vi sion screen pro duced by the great est tel e vi sion pro -
duc er in the world can not pro vide such a sharp image
for you. This is a three-dimen sion al, col ored, and
extreme ly sharp image. For more than 100 years, thou -
sands of engi neers have been try ing to achieve this
sharp ness. Factories, huge prem is es were estab lished,
much research has been done, plans and designs have
been made for this pur pose. Again, look at a TV screen
and the book you hold in your hands. You will see that
there is a big dif fer ence in sharp ness and dis tinc tion.
Moreover, the TV screen shows you a two-dimen sion -
al image, where as with your eyes, you watch a three-
dimen sion al per spec tive with depth.
For many years, tens of thou sands of engi neers have
tried to make a three-dimen sion al TV and achieve the

vision qual i ty of the eye. Yes, they have made a three-
dimen sion al tel e vi sion sys tem, but it is not pos si ble to
watch it with out put ting on spe cial 3-D glass es; more -
over, it is only an arti fi cial three-dimen sion. The back -
ground is more blurred, the fore ground appears like a
paper set ting. Never has it been pos si ble to pro duce a
sharp and dis tinct vision like that of the eye. In both the
cam era and the tel e vi sion, there is a loss of image qual -
i ty.
Evolutionists claim that the mech a nism pro duc ing
this sharp and dis tinct image has been formed by
chance. Now, if some body told you that the tel e vi sion
in your room was formed as a result of chance, that all
of its atoms just hap pened to come togeth er and make
up this device that pro du ces an image, what would you
think? How can atoms do what thou sands of peo ple
can not?
If a device pro duc ing a more prim i tive image than
the eye could not have been formed by chance, then it
is very evi dent that the eye and the image seen by the
eye could not have been formed by chance. The same
sit u a tion applies to the ear. The outer ear picks up the
avail a ble sounds by the auri cle and directs them to the
mid dle ear, the mid dle ear trans mits the sound vibra -
tions by inten si fy ing them, and the inner ear sends these
vibra tions to the brain by trans lat ing them into elec tric
sig nals. Just as with the eye, the act of hear ing final iz -

es in the cen ter of hear ing in the brain.
The sit u a tion in the eye is also true for the ear. That
is, the brain is insu lat ed from sound just as it is from
light. It does not let any sound in. Therefore, no mat ter
how noisy is the out side, the inside of the brain is com -
plete ly silent. Nevertheless, the sharp est sounds are
per ceived in the brain. In your com plete ly silent brain,
you lis ten to sym pho nies, and hear all of the nois es in
a crowd ed place. However, were the sound level in your
brain meas ured by a pre cise device at that moment,
com plete silence would be found to be pre vail ing there.
As is the case with image ry, dec ades of effort have
been spent in try ing to gen er ate and repro duce sound
that is faith ful to the orig i nal. The results of these efforts
are sound record ers, high-fidel i ty sys tems, and sys -
tems for sens ing sound. Despite all of this tech nol o gy
and the thou sands of engi neers and experts who have
been work ing on this endeav or, no sound has yet been
obtained that has the same sharp ness and clar i ty as
the sound per ceived by the ear. Think of the highest-
qual i ty hi-fi sys tems pro duced by the larg est com pa -
ny in the music indus try. Even in these devi ces, when
sound is record ed some of it is lost; or when you turn on
a hi-fi you always hear a hiss ing sound before the music
starts. However, the sounds that are the pro ducts of
the human body's tech nol o gy are extreme ly sharp and
clear. A human ear never per ceives a sound accom pa -

nied by a hiss ing sound or with atmos pher ics as does
a hi-fi; rath er, it per ceives sound exact ly as it is, sharp
and clear. This is the way it has been since the cre a -
tion of man.
So far, no man-made vis u al or record ing appa ra tus
has been as sen si tive and suc cess ful in per ceiv ing sen -
so ry data as are the eye and the ear. However, as far
as see ing and hear ing are con cerned, a far great er truth
lies beyond all this.
To Whom Does the Consciousness that Sees andHears with in the Brain Belong? Who watch es an allur ing world in the brain, lis tens
to sym pho nies and the twit ter ing of birds, and smells
the rose?
The stim u la tions com ing from a per son's eyes, ears,
and nose trav el to the brain as elec tro-chem i cal nerve
impuls es. In biol o gy, phys i ol o gy, and bio chem is try
books, you can find many details about how this image
forms in the brain. However, you will never come across
the most impor tant fact: Who per ceives these elec tro-
chem i cal nerve impuls es as ima ges, sounds, odors,
and sen so ry events in the brain? There is a con scious -
ness in the brain that per ceives all this with out feel ing
any need for an eye, an ear, and a nose. To whom does
this con scious ness belong? Of course it does not
belong to the nerves, the fat layer, and neu rons com -

pris ing the brain. This is why Darwinist-mate ri al ists,
who believe that every thing is com prised of mat ter,
can not answer these ques tions.
For this con scious ness is the spir it cre at ed by Allah,
which needs nei ther the eye to watch the ima ges nor
the ear to hear the sounds. Furthermore, it does not
need the brain to think.
Everyone who reads this explicit and sci en tif ic fact
should pon der on Almighty Allah, and fear and seek ref -
uge in Him, for He squeez es the entire uni verse in a
pitch-dark place of a few cubic cen ti me ters in a three-
dimen sion al, col ored, shad owy, and lumi nous form.
A Materialist FaithThe infor ma tion we have pre sent ed so far shows us
that the the o ry of evo lu tion is incom pat i ble with sci en -
tif ic find ings. The the o ry's claim regard ing the ori gin of
life is incon sist ent with sci ence, the evo lu tion a ry mech -
a nisms it pro pos es have no evo lu tion a ry power, and
fos sils dem on strate that the required inter me di ate forms
have never exist ed. So, it cer tain ly fol lows that the the -
o ry of evo lu tion should be push ed aside as an unsci -
en tif ic idea. This is how many ideas, such as the Earth-
cen tered uni verse model, have been taken out of the
agen da of sci ence through out his to ry.
However, the the o ry of evo lu tion is kept on the agen -
da of sci ence. Some peo ple even try to rep re sent crit -

i cisms direct ed against it as an "attack on sci ence."
Why?
The rea son is that this the o ry is an indis pen sa ble
dog mat ic belief for some cir cles. These cir cles are
blind ly devot ed to mate ri al ist phi los o phy and adopt
Darwinism because it is the only mate ri al ist expla na -
tion that can be put for ward to explain the work ings of
nature.
Interestingly enough, they also con fess this fact from
time to time. A well-known genet i cist and an out spo -
ken evo lu tion ist, Richard C. Lewontin from Harvard
University, con fess es that he is "first and fore most a
mate ri al ist and then a sci en tist":
It is not that the meth ods and insti tu tions of sci ence
some how com pel us accept a mate ri al expla na tion
of the phe nom e nal world, but, on the con tra ry, that
we are forced by our a pri o ri adher ence to mate ri al
caus es to cre ate an appa ra tus of inves ti ga tion and a
set of con cepts that pro duce mate ri al expla na tions,
no mat ter how coun ter-intu i tive, no mat ter how mys -
ti fy ing to the unin i ti at ed. Moreover, that mate ri al ism
is abso lute, so we can not allow a Divine [inter ven -
tion]...19
These are explicit state ments that Darwinism is a
dogma kept alive just for the sake of adher ence to mate -
ri al ism. This dogma main tains that there is no being
save mat ter. Therefore, it argues that inan i mate, uncon -

scious mat ter cre at ed life. It insists that mil lions of dif -
fer ent liv ing spe cies (e.g., birds, fish, giraffes, tigers,
insects, trees, flow ers, whales, and human beings) orig -
i nat ed as a result of the inter ac tions between mat ter
such as pour ing rain, light ning flash es, and so on, out
of inan i mate mat ter. This is a pre cept con tra ry both to
rea son and sci ence. Yet Darwinists con tin ue to defend
it just so as "not to allow a Divine inter ven tion."
Anyone who does not look at the ori gin of liv ing
beings with a mate ri al ist prej u dice will see this evi dent
truth: All liv ing beings are works of a Creator, Who is
All-Powerful, All-Wise, and All-Knowing. This Creator
is Allah, Who cre at ed the whole uni verse from non-exis -
tence, designed it in the most per fect form, and fash -
ioned all liv ing beings.
The Theory of Evolution: The Most Potent Spellin the World Anyone free of prej u dice and the influ ence of any
par tic u lar ide ol o gy, who uses only his or her rea son and
logic, will clear ly under stand that belief in the the o ry of
evo lu tion, which brings to mind the super sti tions of
soci e ties with no knowl edge of sci ence or civ il i za tion,
is quite impos si ble.
As explained above, those who believe in the the o -
ry of evo lu tion think that a few atoms and mol e cu les
thrown into a huge vat could pro duce think ing, rea son -

ing pro fes sors and uni ver si ty stu dents; such sci en tists
as Einstein and Galileo; such art ists as Humphrey
Bogart, Frank Sinatra and Luciano Pavarotti; as well as
ante lopes, lemon trees, and car na tions. Moreover, as
the sci en tists and pro fes sors who believe in this non -
sense are edu cat ed peo ple, it is quite jus ti fi a ble to
speak of this the o ry as "the most potent spell in his to -
ry." Never before has any other belief or idea so taken
away peo ples' pow ers of rea son, refused to allow them
to think intel li gent ly and log i cal ly, and hid den the truth
from them as if they had been blind fold ed. This is an
even worse and unbe liev a ble blind ness than the totem
wor ship in some parts of Africa, the peo ple of Saba
wor ship ping the Sun, the tribe of Prophet Ibrahim (as)
wor ship ping idols they had made with their own hands,
or the peo ple of Prophet Musa (as) wor ship ping the
Golden Calf.
In fact, Allah has point ed to this lack of rea son in the
Qur'an. In many vers es, He reveals that some peo ples'
minds will be closed and that they will be pow er less to
see the truth. Some of these vers es are as fol lows:
As for those who do not believe, it makes no dif fer -
ence to them wheth er you warn them or do not warn
them, they will not believe. Allah has sealed up their
hearts and hear ing and over their eyes is a blind fold.
They will have a ter ri ble pun ish ment. (Surat al-

… They have hearts with which they do not under -
stand. They have eyes with which they do not see.
They have ears with which they do not hear. Such
peo ple are like cat tle. No, they are even fur ther
astray! They are the una ware. (Surat al-A‘raf, 179)
Even if We opened up to them a door into heav en,
and they spent the day ascend ing through it, they
would only say: "Our eye sight is befud dled! Or rath -
er we have been put under a spell!" (Surat al-Hijr, 14-
15)
Words can not express just how aston ish ing it is that
this spell should hold such a wide com mu ni ty in thrall,
keep peo ple from the truth, and not be bro ken for 150
years. It is under stand a ble that one or a few peo ple
might believe in impos si ble sce nar i os and claims full
of stu pid i ty and illog i cal i ty. However, "magic" is the
only pos si ble expla na tion for peo ple from all over the
world believ ing that uncon scious and life less atoms
sud den ly decid ed to come togeth er and form a uni verse
that func tions with a flaw less sys tem of organ i za tion,
dis ci pline, rea son, and con scious ness; a plan et named
Earth with all of its fea tures so per fect ly suit ed to life;
and liv ing things full of count less com plex sys tems.
In fact, the Qur'an relates the inci dent of Prophet
Musa (as) and Pharaoh to show that some peo ple who
sup port athe is tic phil os o phies actu al ly influ ence oth -
ers by magic. When Pharaoh was told about the true

reli gion, he told Prophet Musa (as) to meet with his own
magi cians. When Musa (as) did so, he told them to dem -
on strate their abil i ties first. The vers es con tin ue:
He said: "You throw." And when they threw, they
cast a spell on the peo ple's eyes and caused them to
feel great fear of them. They pro duced an extreme -
ly pow er ful magic. (Surat al-A‘raf, 116)
As we have seen, Pharaoh's magi cians were able to
deceive every one, apart from Musa (as) and those who
believed in him. However, his evi dence broke the spell,
or "swal lowed up what they had forged," as the verse
puts it:
We revealed to Musa: "Throw down your staff." And
it imme di ate ly swal lowed up what they had forged.
So the Truth took place and what they did was shown
to be false. (Surat al-A‘raf, 117-8)
As we can see, when peo ple real ized that a spell had
been cast upon them and that what they saw was just
an illu sion, Pharaoh's magi cians lost all cred i bil i ty. In
the present day too, unless those who, under the influ -
ence of a sim i lar spell, believe in these ridic u lous claims
under their sci en tif ic dis guise and spend their lives
defend ing them, aban don their super sti tious beliefs,
they also will be humil i at ed when the full truth emer ges
and the spell is bro ken. In fact, world-renowned British
writer and phi los o pher Malcolm Muggeridge, who was
an athe ist defend ing evo lu tion for some 60 years, but

who sub se quent ly real ized the truth, reveals the posi -
tion in which the the o ry of evo lu tion would find itself in
the near future in these terms:
I myself am con vinced that the the o ry of evo lu tion,
espe cial ly the extent to which it's been applied, will be
one of the great jokes in the his to ry books in the future.
Posterity will mar vel that so very flim sy and dubi ous an
hypoth e sis could be accept ed with the incred i ble cre -
du li ty that it has.20
That future is not far off: On the con tra ry, peo ple will
soon see that "chance" is not a deity, and will look back
on the the o ry of evo lu tion as the worst deceit and the
most ter ri ble spell in the world. That spell is already rap -
id ly begin ning to be lift ed from the shoul ders of peo ple
all over the world. Many peo ple who see its true face
are won der ing with amaze ment how they could ever
have been taken in by it.
