GARDEN DREAMS A Saturday with the UW-Extension
Portage County Master Gardener Volunteers
The UW-Extension PCMGVs will host Garden Dreams, a day long gardening seminar, on Saturday, January 11, 2014 at the Lettie Jensen Community Center in Amherst. The seminar will run from 7:30 am to 3:00 pm. Cost is $30. There will be two great speakers, as well as a hot lunch provided by Ambrosia.
The first speaker of the day will be Roy Diblik, co-owner of Northwind Perennial Farm in Burlington, WI. Roy knows perennials and is a native plant expert. He will present “The Know Maintenance Approach.” For 30 years he has been growing, studying and planting them. In this unique approach to designing with perennials, he creates communities of compatible plants that live well together and support each other. They establish quickly and become gorgeous, glorious gardens that require minimal care. Roy creates gardens that are easy to take care of. He grows his native plants from seed. Simplify and streamline is his credo. “Small Trees with Big Impact: will be presented next by Jeff Epping, Director of Horticulture at Olbrich Botanical Garden in Madison. A native of southern Wisconsin, Epping received his Bachelor and Masters degrees from the University of Wisconsin-Madison in Ornamental Horticulture. Small-scale trees are key players in any well-designed garden for their year-round beauty and structure. Whether you are after beautiful flowers, fruit, bark, form or fall color, there is a tree to fit your needs. The list of trees is large, and keen horticulturists are creating and discovering new cultivars and species every year. Jeff will sort through the top performing small-scaled ornamental trees for Midwest gardens.
After lunch, Roy Diblik and Jeff Epping will team up to present “Grasses & Sedges—Who they are, What they do & How they are used effectively in the landscape.” Ornamental grasses and sedges are truly Midwestern plants that are culturally adapted to our Wisconsin soils and climate. Roy and Jeff will introduce you to some new grasses and sedges, as well as talk about some tried and true performers that no garden should be without. They will also show you how they have used them in projects they have designed and maintained. Creative plantings that are truly sustainable plant communities are not only beautiful, but they are good for the environment and easier to maintain for the gardener. This team presentation is sure to make for an informative, enjoyable afternoon.
The Lettie Jensen Community Center is located at 487 North Main Street, Amherst. For more information contact Linda Zick at (715) 341-4941 or download the Garden Dreams registration form at: http://portage.uwex.edu. Registration forms are also available at the Jensen Center, the Portage County UW-Extension Office and all county libraries. Registration
deadline is January 7, 2014.

December Garden Guide
Resource: http://www.gardengatenursery.com/garden-tips
BEFORE YOU FORGET . . .
As this year’s outdoor growing season is ending, take notes on your successes and failures in the garden. Was that spot too shady for that shrub? Did that annual thrive in the drier soil? Did that rose require too much maintenance? Did you love the fragrance of that flower?
Knowing what worked and what didn't will help you plan next year's garden and make it more beautiful than the last.
PLANT SPRING BULBS . . .LAST CHANCE!
Would you like Spring to come a bit sooner after a long and dreary winter? The outdoor gardening season can begin in early March if you plant early-blooming bulbs such as snowdrops, crocuses, Siberian squill, and some daffodil varieties.
Bulbs can be planted until the ground is frozen, which typically happens here between late November and early December.
CLEAN UP & WINTERIZE YOUR GARDEN
As the leaves fall off the trees and plants die back with the frost, it’s time to clean up and prepare your lawn and garden for the long winter ahead.
Mowed leaves make an excellent compost and mulch, which can remain on the lawn as long as it’s not too deep or be used to insulate rose and perennial beds.
Empty, clean, or otherwise winterize any water-holding container, such as fountains, bird baths, or rain barrels.
WINTERIZE YOUR WATER GARDENS
Prepare plants for winter once the ground is frozen. Roses should be mulched and trees protected from damage from deer. Mulching for insulation too early will prematurely cut plants off from sunlight and promote mold growth.
Most trees and shrubs should not be pruned until they are completely dormant.
Mark lawn and garden edges near driveways and walkways to guide snow removal and prevent snow-plow damage.
Finally, clean, winterize, and store your garden tools after you are finished with your last cleanup for the year. It is especially important to remember to winterize power tools, which could otherwise be damaged.
