• A blocktrain with electric traction from Hamburg to Slawkow with 35 x 40‘ Containers emits only 30% of the CO2 compared to 35 trucks on the same route and 50% of a diesel traction train.
Environmentally friendly
• Moreover, while it is uneconomical to let trucks wait for match-back cargo and thus usually send containers back empty after unloading, containers sent by rail in intermodal transportation can be returned empty to a terminal near the factory. In case of availability of export cargo, the container is then trucked short distance to the place of loading and then railed to the port, thus reducing the number of energy consuming empty runs.

Good Perspectives for Rail Transport
• Port container terminals in Europe have modernised and upgraded their rail handling facilities in order to prepare for expected handling growth and relieve quayside congestion.
• More and more investors are detecting CIS (especially Russia and Ukraine) as interesting region for investment into labour-cost effective production facilities.
• The introduction of road toll systems in EU countries as well the enforcement of driver protection rules such as restriction of driving hours may further enhance the attractiveness of containerised rail transport chains.

Perspectives of Eastern European Container Markets •In the medium-term, the EE logistics and transport market is expected to show further double-digit growth. Especially container transportation will profit from imrpoved standards of living in the EE countries.
•Containerisation of commodities is still low as compared to EU-15 standards but expected to catch up fast.
•Investments in EE countries during past years have considerably strengthened fast growing light/consumer industries which are integrated in global supply chains, e.g. automotive, furniture, consumer electronics
•Closer economic ties between the EU and South East, Eastern Europe and Central Asia will strengthen the role of Central European countries also as transit countries for Southeast Europe and the CIS.

Lessons learned• Rail transport from the North Sea hubs are fast and reliable for
larger volumes and thus are complementary to feeder transportation.
• Cooperation between feeder, rail and road (hot shots) to ensure continuous production flow.
• Rail transport has a clear environmental advantage against road transport.
• Rail transport is most competitive for development of direct links between seaport and factory‘s rail siding. Rail terminals near a production factory can be used as interim storage (bonded area) of containers to allow just-in-time delivery and Customs clearance outside seaport and factory.
• Intermodal rail transport operators provide depot holding of empty containers at their terminals and EDI reporting of container moves, both features most valuable for shipping lines.
