Free Verse- Vers Libre

Free verse still uses rhythm but not in the regular patterns of meter

Poems lack meter, but provides a recognizable cadence by repeating words
Uses Anaphora- same word or phrase repeated at the beginning of two or more lines
Whitman referred to free-verse as “Barbaric Yawps”
Whitman’s revolutionary poems were first published in 1855.
Most poets did not agree with his use of free-verse in the 19th century, but it later caught on with poets of the 20th century and is one of the most widely used forms of poetry today.
