Bellringer……• Respond to the following quickwrite prompts in your
English II spiral notebook. Your answers do not need to be in complete sentences:
– What are the first words that come to mind when you hear the phrase “arranged marriage”?
– What is the difference between a “love match,” which we saw in Bend It Like Beckham with Jess and Joe, and an “arranged marriage,” like we saw between Jess’ sister and her fiancé/husband?
– Would you accept an arranged marriage? Why/why not?
– Does a man still have to ask permission of the father to marry his daughter?
– Can only the man ask the woman to marry him? Why?
– Who pays for the wedding?
Brainstorm…– Get out a separate sheet of paper.
– Title the paper “Arranged Marriages.”
– Fold the paper in half to make two vertical columns.
– Label one column “pros” and one column “cons.”
– Brainstorm a list the of possible pros and cons of an arranged marriage and write them in the appropriate column.
SpringBoard…– Read “Matrimony with a Proper Stranger” on
pages 84-7.
– As you read, mark the text for the pros and cons of an arranged marriage according to the article.
– Add the pros and cons from the article to the list you brainstormed prior to reading.
– After reading the article, complete the double-bubble map for the similarities and differences in marriage customs between Bend It Like Beckham and “Marriage with a Proper Stranger.”
