8. Pentas lanceolata

In warm weather, pentas grows fast and stays in bloom constantly. Penta seeds are popular and sold at our local Wal-Mart. These Pentas are found on my neighbor’s yard. They own a bed & breakfast home and line their yard with beautiful flowers.

10. Hibiscus rosa-sinensis

This Hibiscus rosa-sinensis is from the family Malvaceae. It is popularly grown here on the Hawaiian islands. The flowers are large and does not have a scent. This flower was found on my neighbors yard across the street. The specks of white show a virus but does shine beauty.

12. Nene Goose: Hawaii State Bird

This Nene goose, genus Branta sandvicensis was found at Wailoa State Park in Hilo down the street from my house. They are native to Hawaii and are endangered with 3,000 in population. They have a loud honking sound and eat vegetables, grass & worms.

13. Kumquat, genus Fortunella. A smaller fruit than the orange, oval in size. This fruit grows in our yard. My father planted them in 1998. It bears fruit 2

times a year with 4 -5 fruits. They thrive in sub-tropic areas.

14. Cooking Banana is from the family of Musaceae. This bunch is growing in our back yard. The tree is actually taller than our house. My mom always finds a tall man in church to help her harvest them. They bear fruit tenaciously. This variety has no taste. They are used for cooking in dishes when they are ripe.

My favorite juicey and sweet Hayden Mangoes from Maui I got at the Hilo Farmers Market & Lychee from my Auntys tree.

15. Peaberry, genus caracoli growing on the Holualoa hillside in Kona town at Aunty Gloria’s house. You can see the coffee bean peering out in the middle of the cluster. They say that Peaberry coffee have less caffeine because of the roasting process.
