Overview of Pioneers

• Pioneers lived off of the land. They used the resources that they had readily available to them to survive. One item that the women made brought joy to the table after a long days hard work, apple pie. It has always been the choice American dessert and as soon as the pioneer woman had grease enough to make the crust and the resources to make the filling, pie was served!!

Recipe for Apple Pie• 2 tbsp. water• ¼ tsp. salt• ¾ to 1c. Sugar• 2 tbsp. flour• 4 tbsp. diced butter• ½ tsp. ground cinnamon• ¼ tsp. ground ginger• 1 tsp. vanilla• 1 ½ tbsp. fresh lemon juice• ½ tsp. ground allspice• 2 tbsp. cream• ¼ tsp. grated nutmeg• 5 c. sliced tart cooking apples• Fresh or frozen pie crust

Homemade Pie Crust• 1 cup minus 2 Tbsp. shortening

1/4 hot water1 Tbsp. milk2-1/4 cups all purpose flour1/2 tsp. salt

• Place shortening in large bowl. Pour hot water and milk over the shortening. With a dinner fork, break up the shortening into smaller pieces. Tilt bowl and beat quickly until the mixture looks like whipped cream. This will take 3-5 minutes of constant beating. Mix together flour and salt, add to the shortening mixture and mix well with the fork until the dough forms a ball that cleans the bowl. Divide the pie dough into two parts.
