Word fro th Preidn
College life is always dear to every student and the
nostalgia it kindles is nothing but a reminder of the variousmoments down the memory lane. And, every year an inevitable
fun lled memory would be the intercollegiate culturals. SSN
too has had its part in strongly anchoring such blissful memories
and valuable experiences in the minds of its students. Every
year I am awestruck seeing the eort that goes into organising
INSTINCTS. This is a three day event lled with youthful
energy and seamless planning. It always makes me happy to
see how talented this young generation is. I am sure this yeartoo, the spirits will be high and INSTINCTS will turn a huge
success.
This year’s theme is another strong reason for the eager
expectation of its success. It makes me feel glad to see that the
students of this year have taken eorts to celebrate the greatness
of humanity by celebrating the comeback of Chennai. At the
time when Chennai was aected by the worst of nature’s fury, it
is so tting to celebrate the strength with which it fought back.
SSN aims to be a centre of excellence in all areas like
education, extra- curricular activities and sports. INSTINCTS
is truly an event which provides a platform for nurturing the
hidden talents of the students. INSTINCTS is a true reection
SSN’s belief of ‘Freedom with Responsibility’. I am very proudof how INSTINCTS has turned out to be increasingly successful
every year and I congratulate everyone who is tirelessly working
towards its success.
I have immense faith in the potential of SSNites in making
INSTINCTS 2k16 a big success.

INSTINCTS has become a part and parcel of SSN after
seeing boundless success all these years. It makes me beam withhappiness and satisfaction every time I see the smiles on the
faces of our students. The very thought that it has stood the test
of time and is yet again going to happen in a bigger better way
is making me proud. Every year I visibly see that students try
their level best to give nothing less than the best with whatever
resources they are provided with. Seeing the dedication and
eagerness of students every year the management of SSN too
has been supporting them in every possible way.
This cultural fest not only celebrates the talent of students
in dierent areas of arts but also teaches them the importance
of team work and gives them a good experience in managing
and co-ordinating a live event. This makes them condant and
better individuals. Just like everyone else, I too very eagerly look
forward to witnessing three days of INSTINCTS with lot of
expectations. Every year our students have proved successful and
have kept up the expectations without disappointing anyone.
This year too they have been enthusiastically working towards
making it a success. Another reason to feel proud about this
year’s INSTINCTS is that students have decided to honour the
act of humanity by celebrating the Comeback of Chennai.
Looking forward to see its success.

So, it has come again! INSTINCTS. Especially so, when
it got sandwiched between the oods and elections. After adevastating deluge in Chennai, ‘To have or not to have’ was
in every body’s lips until it was decided in favour of students..
They have decided, if not for any thing else, to show that human
race, can rise up as a Phoenix, come what may. Through this
calamity, people from the lower rung of the society have proved
beyond any doubt that ‘the have-nots are in no way wanting,
in helping the mankind, given an occasion.’ I am happy to see
that students have chosen to honour those unsung heroes, whospontaneously helped those in need during the time of distress.
Art need not necessarily for entertainment alone, but could
be educative as well. This has been proved more than once in
yester years through the successful conduct of INSTINCTS.
Students have rightly christened this version of INSTINCTS as
‘Do you think that we will be cowed down?’. My best wishes for
all those who have toiled to make this happen!

INSTINCTS, will always be one of the fondest memories
that every student who graduates from SSN will cherish. Theexcitement and enthusiasm that every student churns out ensure
the grandeur and success of Instincts year after year. Three days
of the fest are completely packed with lots of fun and frolic.
The creativity of the fest has only soared higher in every version
since its inception.
I know that it takes great commitment, teamwork,
coordination and above all, sheer hard work to make such a hugeevent a success in all grounds. Further, I am proud in stating that
every year I see an amazing team of students who have come up
with bundles of enthusiasm and calibre in making it a huge hit.
It is a fact that with every passing year, the quality of the fest
is on a constant rise, and I am really proud of my students who
make this possible. I hope for the same level of involvement and
participation from every student, in making INSTINCTS-2016as well, a grand success. However, this year, there are additional
reasons to look forward to this extravaganza. The students
have been very socially responsible and I am glad to state that
this year’s INSTINCTS is going to be a symbol of celebrating
the Comeback Of Chennai, post the recent December oods
caused by the torrential rains.
I wish both the organisers and participants the very best
in making Instincts 2016 a huge success!

The very word Instincts has always brought a rush of
nostalgic memories in each and every SSNite. Witnessing thisextravaganza from the spectator’s point of view for the past
couple of years and just enjoying the three days of fun lled
ecstasy, planned ahead by the passionate hard working core
team every year, was all we knew. But, currently that drive to
contribute our part in organising this amazing cultural fest has
elevated our energy levels beyond description.
For a couple of months now we have been ardently workingtowards bringing out the usual magic that Instincts always spurts
out. This year we faced a lot of hurdles right from whether or
not Instincts would even take place, to gradually ghting it out
to ensure it happens for all three days. This year Instincts is
conducted as celebration of the ‘Comeback of Chennai’. This
theme was partly inspired from the actual situation Instincts
itself was in initially, just as Chennai herself. Gathering all our
strength and bouncing back with all our might, we were able
to stabilize this situation and nally succeed in overcoming the
various hurdles. Needless to say, like every other year our biggest
pillar of support yet again was Dr. Sunita Nair. She has been
with us through thick and thin, and has given us all the freedom
that we needed.
We are blessed beyond bounds this year in having anabsolutely understanding team who worked with so much
passion towards making it a success. We look forward for the
three days to unfold and relish the excitement in the eyes of
the beholders. The mile long involuntary smiles that reect
everyone’s satisfaction will be the ultimate symbol of success of
this year’s Instincts. We thank everyone who has been behind
the success of Instincts 2016 and express our sincere gratitude
to the management of SSN for having given us the freedom toexperiment and explore our creativity in organising this cultural
fest.

CELEBRATING THE COMEBACK
STUDENT CORNER
After having experienced the hottest summer ever, monsoon was a
welcome change in Chennai. Better late than never, we thought. Little did everyhappy soul that witnessed these rains know that monsoon was soon going to be the
worst fear of every Chennaite!
December 1 it was! The city blacked out, people were trapped at random
shelters across the city or worse so, on the roads. Every child, woman and man
were equally terried at not having their loved ones back home, alongside a
communication loss with nil contact to the outside world! As dusk descended, and
people hoped for some sort of miracle, the intensity had not waned one bit! To addon to all this petrication, entire lives were wiped out overnight. The sorrow was
endless.
When the city of dreams drowned, the dreamers rose as one! Rich and poor,
young and old, men and women alike came forward to help those stranded on the
streets. With no exception we came out in force. We worked endlessly shoulder-
to-shoulder to rescue the needy. Celebrities abandoned their grease paint and
used their power to raise money, and organize relief camps. The much criticized younger generation came forward, and with no boundaries, stopped at no odds,
and travelled from one corner of the city to another to supply relief materials.
Our neighboring cities almost emptied out with the youngsters driving in, to lend
a hand.
Seven days went by. Sun shone
upon a ravaged city. Millions were
scattered through random parts ofthe city mourning over their lost ones
and homes. The city was devastated.
Each time the sun played a game of
hide and seek with the people, worried
eyes went up to the sky. Days passed by, and the labor of every individual slowly
started paying o in some corner of the city. The city was truly humbled by the
fury of nature. When a ray of sunshine put a smile on one’s face, and the small joys
of life were perceived, empathy and compassion took their well-deserved places.
It wouldn’t be an overstatement to say that the ercely proud Chennai-vasis put
normalcy back in the city. If not for a handful of like-minded people who came

together, recovery would still have been a distant dream.
From where we were two months back, Chennai has denitely lost the title
of the ood-hit area to its day old name, ‘Singara Chennai’. Our city stands tall on
the shoulders of those who’ve been unimaginably seless, and contributed their bit
to the city that nurtured them.
At Instincts 2016, we SSNites join hands with the Chennai-vasis who’ve
redeemed our faith in compassion and humanity, and honor the strongly risen
Chennai, and its people. This Instincts is not just going to be about dancing, singing
and partying. It’s going to be about lauding the city, and its tough people for ghting
back, and not giving up their city.
Let’s celebrate these unsung heroes over three days, at one of the most sought
after cultural events of the city, with endless music, dance and partying.

From a nal year’s perspective
As rst years, I remember the excitement we experienced as we rst set foot
into the surreal world of Instincts. “Whaat? We get to stay in college till 11 PM?”,“Wait, Rj balaji is coming here just to kalai us?”, “Ooohh, there’s a fashion show?”,
“DJ Night was epic nooo?” - I remember thinking, “So, this here is the fun that
was always promised in college life.”
As we stepped into second year, we
started observing how much, just how much
work goes into every aspect of Instincts that
we kind of took for granted in the rst year.Everything from a Facebook share to the main
stage arrangements required thought, eort
and implementation. “Man, our seniors do
work hard”, “I wonder how we’d handle these
responsibilities”, “Oh god I never realized deco
was this hard”, “Man, nding sponsors sure is
tough work!”.
Third year came and with it came the
best version of Instincts as yet. Standards were
set, Bars were raised and Expectations were
multiplied during Instincts 2k15. Right from
the excellent publicity, brilliant space themed
decorations, grandiose pro shows, never ending
list of celebrities and unparalleled crowds, we
saw what months of coordinated hard work
could accomplish. Working with our seniors
over time helped us hone our skills, taught
us what team work is, made us overcome last
minute panic, helped us overcome internal
politics and gave us some brilliant memories to cherish. “I can’t wait for Instincts
2k16”, “We’ve GOT to show them how it’s done”, “Hope we make our seniorsproud” – We looked forward with dreamy eyes.
But nature had dierent plans: December 2015 - a month no Chennaiite

would ever forget. Unprecedented rains and oods caused irreparable damage and
set in motion a colossal upset of human lives, resources and plans. Chennai slowly
overcame the disaster with never-seen-before spirit and set an example for the rest
of the world. Only later did we realize the extent to which our plans for Instincts
were hit. With haphazard exam schedules, repeated postponement, reluctant
volunteering and limited time and resources, the question of whether Instincts
would even happen loomed large in all our hearts. Come February, there came
an announcement – “YES. Instincts IS very
much on”. From thereon it was all go, go
and go. Slowly but steadily, work for Instincts
picked up. With the theme “Celebrating the
Comeback of Chennai” being close to all
our hearts, we started gaining belief that the
dreams we held for our version of Instinctsmaybe would come true after all. We looked
back at what our seniors had accomplished,
and found the enthusiasm and energy to
proceed with full vigor towards Instincts
2k16 despite having crippling hurdles.
So here we are now, at the cusp of the big event. Only a few days to go, and
SSN is buzzing with frenzied activity. There’s a bittersweet feeling among us nal years - It is our one last show and we promise you it’s going to be an experience of
a lifetime. So, make it to SSN on March 10, 11 and 12 – This one’s on us.

What is common between ‘lter kaapi’, Sathyam Cinemas’ Popcorn, Marina’s
never-ending shoreline, CSK? Bet you got the answer already. (Let’s hope u didn’t
assume just from the Title :P)
Yes, Chennai it is! The amazing city that welcomes every person with open
arms. It’s known for its undiminishing culture and the unique blend of lifestyle it
oers.
Food
Dishes that dene the city, suches as Idly, Dosa
coupled with Sambhar are deadly combinations that
only keep you asking for more! The Chaat Food, though
having been originated in North India, has become an
integral part of the city’s street food. The one drink
that we cannot live without – Yes the Filter Coee
(No, not alcohol: P) whose aroma reaches through our
neighbours’ homes. And of course, Biryani! Be it theVegetarian option or the Non-Veg one, no Chennaite
can live without this dish and it’s certainly the number
1 item on the To-Do List of any family get-together.
Music
One waits all year round just for the array of
melliuous voices at concerts during the Margazhiseason that comes in December. Not only that, many
Chennaites are also great fans of the lm music and
even International artists and bands. These concerts
of various genres are almost always a part of any
celebration/festival and the tickets sell out for sure!

Kollywood
It’s an understatement that the city worships
Superstar Rajinikanth. Every Chennaite knows the
struggle to get an FDFS ticket for any Thalaivar movie
that releases. Kamal Haasan, Thalapathy Vijay, Thala
Ajith too have crazy fanbases and more recently, the only
thing we hear these days are Thala-Thalapathy related
questions. Divided by the stars we look up to, we are all
united by one factor – which is the love for Cinema and
Sathyam Popcorn!
Dance
Bharatnatyam, which is the ocial dance of Tamil
Nadu is very popular here. The dance is not only graceful,
but can also express any complicated story in such a
gripping manner. Western dances like Hip Hop, Salsa,
Zumba too have caught up among the city’s youngsters
and has gained its own followers.
With every aspect of the city making us love theplace more and more each moment, all we have to do is
protect our city and revel and celebrate this monumental
metropolis!

If someone were to say they managed to get something for free, they might have said, “Osi ah kedachidhu.” What is this “osi”word that everyone loves using? Letters written by the East India

The Chennai oods cannot be simply called as the time when the city facedthe “wrath of the rain gods”, but it is more of a tale of how we invited trouble upon
ourselves. There is no doubt that the city was battered by unprecedented rains, but
in retrospect, we realize that much of the damage could have been averted. In the
process of ushering in the period of massive growth of the city, the lakes, ponds
and other water bodies have been converted into construction sites, ruling out the
possibility of the rainwater draining into these water bodies. The main cause of
the oods was that the water overowing from the water bodies that were lled to
their capacities had large buildings obstructing its path and so it came gushing intothe mainland from all possible directions, where it remained stagnated due to lack
of proper draining channels. The fault here lies with the poor urban planning that
never took water ow seriously and thus never foresaw the problems that could arise
due to improper water drainage and storage systems. There are no checks on the
rampant encroachments on the banks of these lakes and ponds and the reclamation
of the water bodies to build giant concrete structures. Once the rivers get lled to
the brim, it is no surprise that the water would be released from the reservoirs. The
startling fact in this case is that in some places the water was released without prior
notice to the people, which left them marooned. The silver lining however was the
exceptional kindness and courage that the people had shown in helping the others
which played a big role in bringing the city back on its feet.
The hard lesson that the oods have taught us is that it is high time that we
mend our attitude towards nature, and make sure that we are better equipped to
face the monsoons. For starters, we need to conserve the existing water bodies and
restore the lost ones, by desilting the reservoir beds and strengthening the bunds.
Strict rules that dictate where constructions can be carried out, and those that curb
the proliferation of commercial real estate are necessary. The need of the hour is
to build robust check dams wherever necessary and to put a solid drainage system
in place.
As we are on our way to promoting this glorious city into an epitome of
development, we need to do it in a sensible manner and make sure that we don’terode its resilience to face any natural calamity that is to come our way in the future.

I got up in the middle of the stark night. Pitch dark with only the distantwhistles of the wind slithering past the trees.
The sky was blank just like my mind with not even a uy cloud to rest it’s
painful loneliness. I opened the French Windows to a spine chilling breeze ghting
it’s way through my sleeves sending me into a mode of frenzy to gather up my
thickest and heaviest blanket.
I looked at the clock so painfully hung on one of the four walls of my room, which so clearly certied me as a complete mess for blundering and salvaging the
past day which has left me searching for my conscience with which I wore the mask.
Wearing a white coat doesn’t mean your conscience is pure too. It’s the most
ironic profession ever. Just like the hands of a murderer ,our hands are guilty with
the blood of the soul which departed so peacefully into the night as we watched
helplessly while God did his handiwork.
The child’s liquid brown eyes still haunted me and it’s smile still tortured me.
Admitted with the nal case of brain cancer,I should have been wise enough to
speak the truth . Just like the last sunshine in the Pandora box, I opened the false
and endless world of hope for her. I still remember her frail body with a startling
smile upon a hairless face with which she used to greet me every morning ,when I
visited her.
The room was so white so cold so blank…with only a heavy set of oxygenmask and pulse meter intimidatingly standing in one end and warning me of the
impending doom round the corner.
Having taken a unique sense of liking towards this young girl ,our relationship
forged through a period of six months when she was under my care. Her health
used to trick me often but I always caught hold of the life string at the end. Every
minute I saved her….every minute I became attached to her.
She became my personal drug without whom ,probably I would survive but
not without pain.

I decorated the room with little pink owers and brought her teddy which
used to make a coy smile play at the end of her mouth. I started staying back to
spend more time with her. Having been admitted into the hospital by an orphanage
,I became a big sister to her. Which was ,the worst best feeling ever.
The time rolled and I could sense her drifting away from me…..and I just
realised despite me spending hours of my mortal time reading papers under the
painful night on saving patients in the nal stage and despite visiting hospitals
bigger than ours , despite ordering the heaviest of drugs……
The only thing she needed at the end of the day was LOVE.
I saw her so blank so silent so calmly staring at the world beyond her, when I
visited her that morning, the coy smile still frozen on her lips .Silent tears threatened
to fall out. I used the mask which I normally do but now with a silent prayer to
make my little angel rest in peace and to hide my feeling of loss and the guilt which
wrapped around like an endless hallway without an exit. Love is always a nightmare
when u know it can’t be forever.
The clocked ticked slowly and steadily for the next day……. under the bright
lights and the white mask and a hollow heart. I saw the sky. It seemed dierent,
probably hours had passed …cause all I could taste was only the salt of my tears. I
stared and there….. I saw a shiny little star ,resting under the uy clouds

People travelling to the past with the help of a time machine might seem a
good way to entertain a seven year old. No matter how fascinating it may sound, a
rational mind would be quick to dismiss the possibility of travelling through time
and instead move on to more important tasks at hand. But then comes a grinning
scientist, adorned with a pair of nerdy spectacles telling you that you’ve been wrong
the entire time. Indeed, our understanding of the Universe has taken a 180 degree
turn in the last century.
It all began with Einstein formulating his famous general theory of relativity
where he stated that space and time are relative to each other, implying that an
object’s relative position in space determines how fast time passes! So, a person living
a 100 years on Earth might live for a 1000 years, if he were in the Interstellar space.
Not surprisingly, it took other scientists 15 years to comprehend the hypothesis and
experimentally verify the seemingly impossible. These experiments conrmed that
the farther you are from an object which induces gravity, the slower time passes in
your frame of reference.
The implications of this theory were nothing short of astounding. Your foot
ages faster than your head. An airplane’s pilot would age slower than a car driver.
Clocks in the communication satellites by default, do not synchronize with the
clocks on the surface of the Earth. Each of the above has been tested and veried!
How much dierence does it make? Well, a few nanoseconds.
At rst glance, a few nanoseconds might not be very impressive. In comesEinstein’s Special Theory of Relativity with a solution. This requires an object to
be accelerated close to the speed of light to automatically travel into the future.
This is the more doable among all the other competing time travel theories. But
how can we accelerate an object to 300,000,000 m/s?
This is where Electronics comes to the rescue. Such a humongous speed
cannot be achieved with any Mechanical force. Advances in Electronics however,
have provided us with particle accelerators like the Van de Gra Generator,Cyclotron, Betatron, Microtron, Synchrotron, Linac and so much more.

Though there are some dierences in their construction, primarily each of the
above uses a high frequency alternating voltage in the following manner- A positively
charged particle is placed within this electric eld and it begins to move towards
the negative terminal. At this instant, the polarity of the voltage reverses. Thus the
particle is forced to move in the opposite direction. Additionally, centrifugal force
begins to act on the particle causing it to move in a circle whose radius increases
each time the polarity of the terminals is reversed, thereby increasing the speed of
the particle at each stage.
By circularly cascading ‘n’ such accelerators which use high frequency ac
signals with a constant phase shift, the speed of the particle can be augmented
by a factor of ‘n’. Practical diculties however, limit the highest possible speed to
80% of the speed of light, enabling scientists to run test on unstable radioactive
elements and it has been observed that their time of radioactive decay can bedoubled by accelerating them to such speeds. In other words, these particles travel
forward through time.
Fasten your seatbelts! I’ve saved the best for the last. Advances in particle
physics and electronics have led to the construction of the Large Hadron Collider
most recently in 2008, which can accelerate particles to 299,792,455 m/s. To be
precise 3m/s less than the speed of light! Test runs are being conducted and the
phenomenon of time travel is set to be ultimately tested with the most sophisticatedtechnology we have at hand within the next year. The results of these experiments
will undoubtedly be no less than intriguing.
That brings us to the question “Can we travel through time?” Well, at the
moment with the technology we have, we’d either have to be shrunk to the size
of an atom or we’d have to develop on ourselves a static electric charge of 40
million volts, which don’t seem feasible. Hold your hats. Because there are only
two constants in the scientic world- 1) The speed of light 2) Change itself, forhistorically it hasn’t taken long for science ctions to turn into reality. As of now
though, that time-travel suit of yours can wait in the closet!

The most extraordinary thing about turning 18 is how completely ordinarythe whole process is.
One night, I was 17, and the next morning, I woke up to a world that called mean adult. That was pretty much the only dierence I noticed on my 18th birthday.I didn’t nd a “Adulthood 101- How to conquer life freaking nally” handbookunder my pillow. I didn’t stride out into the streets, beaming and wholly condentin my existential purpose on Earth. An oversized hairy man in a fur coat denitelydidn’t break into my house and whisper the words, “You’re a wizard Vijay”.
It was a normal birthday, complete with the normal “surprise” party, andthe normal, super awkward cake-cutting part where everyone huddled around meand sang Happy Birthday while I tried not to make eye contact with anything butthe table. You’d think that becoming an adult would teach you to handle that onesituation.
Society caught on pretty quick though. They adapted to me being a grown-up faster than I did. I was expected to do certain things now. To have certainresponsibilities and to fulll certain expectations. Playtime’s over, and the toys weregoing back in the shed.
I’d love to say that I was ready for what was coming, but I wasn’t. Not evenclose.
Growing up is more the slowly descending knife than the quick stab. Youdon’t really notice it until you look down and see a big expanding red blotch on your shirt, but by then, it’s probably too late. The worst part about growing up is you don’t realize you’re growing up. The best part? Ditto.
Another aspect of growing up is coming to terms with yourself, and becoming your own worst enemy in the process.
There’s a sort of comforting familiarity to how often my insecurities visit me
now, almost like catching up with an old school friend over coee. While being heldat gunpoint.

There are moments when I’d be completely, unconditionally okay witheverything in my life. And then there are moments when my insecurities would behaving a eld day, when I’d be reduced to a crippled suocating mess on the inside.I know they won’t ever go away. I don’t want them to, because if I’m having a badday, replete with the unfamiliarity of the world I nd myself in, what else would Ihave to fall back on?
Being an adult means you get an automatic self-worth review from yourself.Every single day. A lot of times, you’re going to see people get into their spacesuitsand shoot o to the moon while you’re still gasping for air down on Earth. (To thinkthis literally happens in NASA.)
College is not a ritual like high school, it’s an evolving process. Nothing
comes easy anymore, be it grades, social interaction, or nding the money for theoccasional evening snack.
Thoughts change. Goals change. People change.
You are going to lose people who’ve always been right next to you, and there’snothing you can do about it.
You will also meet people you’ll instantly connect to, friends or otherwise. You will grow to immensely like them. You will revel in the joy of companionship. You will feel like the luckiest person alive.

But when the shuttle has taken o, and the dust has settled, you’re going tond yourself all alone. Everything is, and always has been, a no-holds barred raceto the top of the survival chain and there you will be, falling and fumbling your wayto the starting line, all by yourself. People do care about you, but they will also enjoyseeing you downtrodden. This is the depressing reality that you’re up against, andit’s the most dicult one you’re forced to grapple with.
Questions change too.
Growing up is harsh because it’s essential to our way of learning.
Right now, I could say that everything’s going to turn out okay in the end,
but I have absolutely no way of knowing. I don’t know who I’ll be in 5 years, or 10,
whether I’d be somebody, or whether my insecurities would have nally gotten the
better of me. I’m utterly, irrevocably scared of the all-encompassing abyss that is
the future because I have no idea what’s in store for me.
I’m excited because I can’t wait to nd out.
I can’t wait to build my own spacesuit.

Hypocrisy is innate. It’s also rather cunning.
But I personally think this mundane trait is what makes us human. We are all
hypocrites, in one way or another. We lie, everyday. We look in the mirror and nd
what greets us fascinating, but we strive to be modest. We pretend to turn a deaf
ear to compliments while we secretly hope it’s the start of a never-ending ow of
appreciation.
There’s a very negligible amount of shame in me when I own up to committingthis crime. I am, unmistakably, a hypocrite.
The thing about hypocrisy is that it’s very dicult to really see it in ourselves.
We have no trouble spotting it in other people. As children, most of us are brought
up with a clear sense of what is right and wrong; what is fair and unfair. When
presented with a dispute, we can usually take the side of justice. Being objective is
extremely easy and we are righteously enraged at the appropriate party, which is on
the wrong side. But we never learnt to apply the same rules to our actions. Clichédbut true.
We each have dierent outlooks on life—my attitude towards life might be
shocking, perhaps even despicable, to you. We talk of being open-minded; we hold
intellectual conversations with intellectual people and succeed in convincing even
ourselves that we truly stand by everything we said. How much of what we speak
is true, really? We talk of being one with nature and kill a cockroach on sight. We
are programmed to nd fault in people. If we actually do encounter a nature-lover,we sco at the impracticality that dictates their lives. Living on fruits and natural
mountain water? Absolutely preposterous!
We denigrate uneducated people and throw an empty bottle out the window.
To delve deeper, we see other people litter and immediately begin a well-worded
diatribe against insensitive humans but we can’t pick up the trash ourselves. Because,
see, it wasn’t our mistake—why should we be held responsible? We ridicule religious
fanatics but we give them a run for their money with our equally ridiculous faith
in our country’s education system (couldn’t resist a personal jibe, there. Seventeen

years of exposure has taught me to throw in my token of rebelliousness where
possible).
If that’s not hypocrisy, I don’t know what is.
A politician can talk of bringing about a change—dierent set of laws and
reduced corruption. But if his son hadn’t bribed the trac ocer, he would havehad to spend the night in jail and that’s bad press. Does that mean to ght bribery,
you would have to begin with bribing people?
But do you know where hypocrisy comes in handy? Humanity. You can’t
judge how good something is, if you can’t compare it with something else. If there
weren’t hypocrites, we wouldn’t have anything with which we would be able to
compare the good people. Now the denition of these people is a little slippery.
Good people are those who try; whether they succeed or not becomes irrelevant.
The simple fact that they try sets them apart from us hypocrites. We are generally
too afraid to do what we say, which is what makes us all hypocrites.
Take this article, for instance. I have rambled about human nature today but
tomorrow, you will nd me going about with my life with no noticeable change in
my attitude. This article is simply a smudge of sensitivity that will easily be wiped
away the moment you reach the end.
Perhaps one day, there will be enough smudges to make an indelible mark.
Too metaphorical? I think so. But what’s life without a bit of drama?

He was nothing if not for his Rationality. Logic and Reason- these he prided
himself upon. They were his lance and shining armour in a world that loved the
Supernatural. He did not believe in ghosts. He was a scientist after all. He rmly
believed that the inexplicable is non-existent. But the problem with beliefs is that
they’re only unshaken when there is nothing to question it.
The TV’s glow was the only source of light in the hall. Orange juice in hand
– he settled on the couch and propped his feet on the table. No beer for him. Not
even on a Saturday evening. What good was a scientist if he was piss-drunk andunable to think straight? He was not religious. But if teetotalling were a faith, he
was a monk of the highest order.
And he was not short of rituals either. Saturday evenings were sacred to
him. No matter what work he had, no matter how messy his table was, at 5PM on
Saturday evening, he was out the lab and o the grid. His experiments could wait
till Monday. At 6PM he would be home. 6:30 PM if the trac was unusually bad.
At 7PM he would watch the latest documentary he had found on Netix.
Today was no dierent. He was not able to concentrate on today’s documentary
though. A rather interesting one about phobias, but his mind was elsewhere. There
had been a lot of stress in the lab. His quarterly review was upcoming, and it had
to go o better than the shit-show the previous one had been. How was it his fault
if the instruments had been badly calibrated by the manufacturer?
“A rather interesting phobia,” said the talking head on the screen, “is the fearof being proven wrong.” He wondered if he had it but he grinned. How could that
be? Scientists were open to being wrong. But are they? Dr. Tanmay had his funding
reduced by the board when the last experiment did not produce desired results…
What if that happened to him? No. His experiment would succeed. Surely. He
must call Sarita up and ask her to run over the calculations again. He went to pick
up the phone – but paused. Nah. Why bother her on a Saturday evening? It could
wait till Monday.
What if they are wrong? Will you have time to x it? A nagging voice in the

back of his mind asked. What if YOU are wrong? Can you live with it? Can you?
He shook his head to clear his mind. He raised the TV’s volume. The talking
head spoke much more loudly – “A common fear is the fear of ghosts. Much
recorded in history, a ghost is not always a gure in white oating in the air. A ghost
is just the term we use to signify the supernatural – the inexplicable. For example,
in 1973 –”
What a load of nonsense he thought. He was rather annoyed with the
documentary now. It was spending a lot of time talking about strange noises. Strange
noises, my foot, he grumbled. Every little thing was explainable. That which could
not be explained did not exist.
An SMS came through on the phone. Odd, he thought. Had I not switched
it o?
“Pl look through readings for expts 3-6. They may be wrong.” Damn it.
It could wait till Monday. He would not go to the lab on Sunday. The idea was
abhorrent to him.
He tried to take another sip of orange juice but the bottle was empty. With
an exasperated sigh, he paused the TV and got up to rell the drink. Might as well
use the bathroom while I’m up, he decided.
He stood at the wash basin and slapped his face with cold water, feeling a
little refreshed as it shocked his nerves. He chuckled. Ghosts, and being wrong.
Huh. What silly things to be afraid of.
He looked up from the tap and stared at his reection once again as he dried
his face with a towel. Grey hair was starting to show a lot more now… And then it
happened.
His reection blinked.

Instincts. So many memories ash through my mind whenever I come across
this word. Instincts has the power to unite the entire college breaking all barriers. This time, undeterred by oods, Instincts is ying high with the same enthusiasm
as ever. With sincere planning and devoted souls toiling to make instincts better
that the previous versions, I’m only as jealous as I’m proud of all the juniors who
are doing an absolutely amazing job. I really wish Instincts evolves every year and
gets into the elite club of Mood Indigo, Saarang and the like. I’m sure this will
happen given the professionalism with which Team Instincts handles Marketing,
Finance, Event Management, Hospitality and On day Crowd management. Every

eventually ends up doing wonders despite all the hiccups. I wish Team Instincts

As glad I am to see the promotions of my dear younger friends, having their
hands full in the lead up to INSTINCTS, so I am to reect on my time doing the
very same, not long ago..
A WEEK TO INSTINCTS. Those long hours and days of productivity,
hearing nothing but the unending discussions, diverse ideas and beautiful innovations
of the people involved, in wanting to make INSTINCTS happen, is always a
pleasant memory. These are the little pleasures of life which come about, when the
elixir is needed, to lift your spirits when things are not going your way. They keep
reminding us that we have achieved something in the rst place, personally and as
a team, making us challenge the hiccups every now and then.
However one may feel through the journey, that is INSTINCTS, I am sure
the fruits of it are sweet. We never know what dierence the experience has made,
until it gives you an impulsive panorama in those crucial moments, be it making an
out of nowhere condent one-liner in a team meeting, or losing yourself in talkingthrough and pulling o a Stress Interview Question out of your heart. We do not
prepare for these, but they end up being the most decisive junctures. The friends
we make along the way, and the exposure that we carry forward are invaluable.
The people, the sweat, the experience, the pressure and the success. At the end of
it all, we cannot thank INSTINCTS enough for our motivated personality.
I wholeheartedly wish the very best to the team, my juniors and the faculty,
to add more feathers to the cap. Making it all the more special is the fact that theevent marks the eorts in bringing up a showdown, going with the proud, spirited
eorts of Chennai. I hope everyone takes the right elements of all the opinions and
ideas, understands each other very well, and cooperates, to scale the event further.
With the new campus landmarks adding to the beauty, let the events soak in the
theme, lift spirits and spin lasting memories.
Good luck for new benchmarks!!

ACKNOWLEDGEMENT
The Chennai rains followed by the devastating
ood attack, turned our city topsy- turvy, leaving us
behind with irreversible damage to lives and property. While returning back to normal itself was a great
challenge, we will always remain greatly indebted to
those who made a huge cultural extravaganza, like
“Instincts” possible in the minimal available time.
As we are celebrating the comeback of Chennai this
year, a page would hardly be sucient to express our
gratitude to all of those who brought our city back to
what it is today and to all those who worked tirelesslyto make such a grand cultural event happen.
However, we would like to take this opportunity
to express our gratitude to a bunch of people in
particular. Sunita Nair Ma’am for holding faith that we
would be able to pull together an occurrence such as
this one in the given short span of time; President Ms.
Kala Vijayakumar, Principal Dr. S. Salivahanan and
Dean Dr. K. Kasturi, for their valuable suggestions; all
our sponsors for believing and investing in Instincts.
This section would never be complete without
thanking all students, who put in their indispensable
time and eort in not just making Instincts happen,
but also making it bigger and better than all of its
previous versions with the limited amount of time
and resources. Finally, we would like to thank SSN for
providing us with such a beautiful platform to display
all of our talents, skills and ideas.
