It’s official! Pinewood suc-cessfully renewed our Green
School certification. This is a sig-
nificant accomplishment, repre-senting our total school commit-
ment to environmental literacy for
our staff, students and the commu-nity. We have once again placed a
large environmental footprint in
Maryland’s efforts to improve envi-ronmental sustainability.
Our school has succeeded in using a holistic, integrated ap-
proach to promote and use envi-
ronmental best management prac-tices and community stewardship.
We were recognized for empower-
ing our youth to practically apply knowledge at school, home, and in
their communities to reduce pollu-
tion, decrease waste, increase habitat, and create healthy learn-
ing and living environments. As
cultural anthropologist Margaret Mead noted, “Never believe that a
few caring people can't change the
world. For, indeed, that's all who ever have.”
Our renewed certification as a Maryland Green School also
shows our progress toward achiev-
ing the environmental literacy stan-dards that the Maryland State De-
partment of Education established
through the Governor’s Partnership for Children in Nature. Most impor-
tantly, our students are learning
stewardship of Earth’s resources
and understanding of their own lo-cal environment.
We will be recognized for
our accomplishments at an awards ceremony at Sandy Point State Park
on May 31st.
Pinewood is especially in-debted to Mrs. Cheri Bain, chair of
the Green School Committee, and a
host of other teachers and staff members that served on the com-
mittee with Mrs. Bain to prepare and present our work. With over
800 families and friends in atten-
dance at the Night of a Thousand Stars, this event showcased all of
the activities we did throughout the
year to learn and live the Green School initiative. Congratulations,
Pinewood on a job well done!

tee Members are:

Spring Attire
With the arrival of warm
weather comes some interesting spring clothing!!! We ask our par-
ents to assist us by making certain
that the clothes your children wear to school are appropriate
and safe. First, please monitor the
messages on the t-shirts that your children are wearing. Please be
certain that shirts cover your child’s midriff, and that pants are
not too “low rise” or too brief.
Flip-flops can create a safety haz-ard in the halls and on the play-
ground. Please avoid allowing
children to wear them to school. Remember that tennis shoes must
be worn on physical education
days. Thank you in advance for assisting your child in using good
judgment when selecting their
school clothing each day.

DID YOU KNOW ? Grass pollen season is from May to August and
ragweed season is August to October. Here are some ideas from
your School Nurse for reducing allergy symptoms.
TIPS FOR MINIMIZING ALLERGENS
♦Try to use air conditioning which cleans,
cools and dries the air.
♦Minimize outdoor activities when pollen counts are high.
Peak pollen times are usually 10 a.m. – 4 p.m.
♦Keep car windows closed when traveling.
♦Try to stay indoors when humidity is reported high and
on windy days when dust and pollen are blown about.
♦Take a shower after spending time outside. Pollen can
collect on your skin and hair.

We have some exciting news to share. During Pinewood’s “Harvest for the Hungry
Food Drive” last fall the 5th grade students wrote business letters to President Obama, asking him to “Help Fight Hunger.” We are
happy to inform you that President Obama wrote a letter back to the students and a copy
of the letter was sent home with each 5th grade student.
The school year is flying by. The stu-dents are working hard and learning during
their Developmental Guidance units. During the month of May, students in each grade will
be receiving age appropriate information re-garding Baltimore County’s Abuse and Ne-glect unit. Please be on the look out for a let-
ter coming home with more information.
Six students from Pinewood received
an award and prize from The Rotary Club of Maryland as Pinewood’s winners of The Four-
Way Test at their awards dinner. Please see a picture of the winners on page 3.

The kindergartener children will
begin the month by designing a beautiful
May calendar. After listening to The Milk
Makers by Gail Gibbons, they will learn
about cows and the products that are made
from milk.
The first grade children are begin-
ning an animal research unit. They will use
this information for a written report in their
classroom. The research will be followed
by a literature unit about Eric Carle. They
will learn about the life of this incredible
author/ illustrator and how it affected his
work.
In the second grade library class,
we are continuing with the Solar System
research project. The children can tell you
what causes day and night and the four dif-
ferent seasons!
The third grade students are finish-
ing their animal research which will culmi-
nate in a written project in the classroom.
The fourth grade students will be
exploring figurative language. Be pre-
pared for some idiomatic expressions at
the dinner table!
The fifth grade students are about to
learn all about the purpose and usefulness
of the bibliography and of course how to
write one correctly using MLA format.

Kindergarteners May will bring ...not showers, but paper weav-ing to our kinder-garten artists! A very intense skill for our little hands, but a won-derful exercise for learning how to control those fingers (and ter-rific for fine mo-tor development), not to mention reinforcing our prior—and new—knowledge of creating patterns in a work of art! Under and over!
First graders Oh my goodness, oh good grief, us-ing yarn in a sea picture to add some “relief!” That is outlining the main parts of a sea animal drawing with strands of yarn to make the shapes pop-out and also add depth! Not to mention a nice texture to the drawing that will soon be filled with drawn color-ful repeated lines and shapes for interesting pat-terns!
Second Graders Second Graders To coincide with a theme being stud-ied in the class-room, our second grade artists will be designing their very own castles! A great way to teach the art of architecture (and maybe a future in designing homes...who knows?) we will outline these or-nate buildings in oil pastels and then use watercolor resist and wash skills to fill them!
Third graders Looking at art-work from 1420 B.C., and explor-ing the differ-ences between the ways the an-cient Egyptians drew portraits and the way they were created in modern civiliza-tion, mainly no-ticing that all Egyptian faces were carved in profile, yet the bodies faced for-ward (but the feet were side-ways!) we are creating family portraits in oil pastel!
Fourth graders These fourth grade sculptural leaf bowls are ab-solutely lovely ...wait until you see them. With beautifully glazed surfaces (and some ingenious, daring glazing techniques—dripping, dabbing, and blending!) the finished surfaces are just terrific. Colorful, decora-tive, textural, yet oh, so functional, these bowls, large or small, could hold fruit or candy, AND the lead free glaze assures safety!
Fifth graders Working with cre-ating figures in motion, our fifth graders are draw-ing people doing any type of activ-ity that demon-strates movement of the body. Col-oring them in chalk pastel, and then creating a suitable back-ground for them, we will attach (with cardboard underneath for depth) the figures in their setting, emphasizing the movement and ac-tivity by adding the element of depth!

Pinewood students bring a wealth of knowl-
edge and skills to school, especially in the area of
technology. It has been a joy to work with them and
find new and unique ways to integrate technology
into the curriculums that they are studying. BCPS’s
matrix of skills, available on the Office of Instruc-
tional Technology’s webpage, has been the guide
for what has been infused into the lessons prepared
this year. With the implementation of the Common
Core curriculum across Maryland and the nation,
21st century skills needed by students are finely
weaved into each learning objective that students
are expected to master. Known as the Four C’s
(creativity, collaboration, critical thinking and
communication), these skills are at the heart of
effective use of technology for our students.
That being said, all of our students have
worked on projects that required them to be crea-
tive, collaborate, make thoughtful choices, and
communicate those choices. Parents and grandpar-
ents who stopped by the lab on the “Night of 1000
Stars” were excited to see the products students
had created (Pixie slide shows, web videos) in rela-
tion to Earth Day and beyond. Numerous multi-
media resources, were used prior to the final pro-
ject to build greater understanding of the issues
and how each one of us can “rethink” what we do
on a daily basis to positively impact our school,
community and the Earth.
We want to personally thank the faithful
volunteers who have come to the lab this
year to help the students. It is always a challenge to
take the kindergarteners from their position on the
“digital native” continuum to a place where they
can use the technology we have in our school. For
many of them, they are quite comfortable using the
apps on their tablets and don’t understand how to
use a mouse or that they will have to log correctly to
access any technology tool we are using. Please
consider helping in the lab next year, especially in
the first half of the year, to ensure that every child
can master the skills needed to creatively communi-
cate with the technology we have available. Thank
you so much!
Here we are in the fourth
quarter! This is the time of year
when all of the hard work from the
previous three quarters starts to
come together.
We just had our annual
Earth Day celebration. At the end
of the school day on April 22nd,
the entire school gathered out
front and sang through 3 songs
related to Earth Day and taking
care of our planet. Students
worked hard to learn these songs
and the actions that go along with
them.
Kindergarten will now
work on refining their knowledge
of all of the musical elements that
they have been working on all
year, as well as practice good
performance techniques.
First graders will be mov-
ing their rhythm symbols to a
staff, and learning how to notate
melody.
Second graders will also
be working on more complicated
staff reading, in order to prepare
for recorders in 3rd grade.
Third graders are starting
to prepare for their fourth quarter
recorder assessment, which will
take place in a few weeks.
Fourth graders are
extremely busy right now. They
are preparing both vocal and
recorder music to perform at the
Spring Concert on May 23rd. Our
5th Grade After School Chorus
will also perform that evening.
Fifth Ggaders are learning
how to evaluate and classify music
of all types.
Congratulations to the
twelve Fifth Graders who partici-
pated in the Baltimore County
Choral and Recorder Festival on
April 20th!!

Camp Invention is returning to
PINEWOOD this summer!
In partnership with Invent Now, Pinewood Elementary is pleased to offer the nationally-acclaimed Camp Invention pro-gram to children entering grades one through six this summer. This exciting, weeklong adventure in creativity immerses chil-dren in imaginative play that reinforces and supplements school-year learning in the subjects of Science, Technology, Engineering and Math (STEM). Children will work together to seek innovative solutions to real-world challenges and sharpen critical 21st century learning skills such as teamwork and crea-tive problem solving as they rotate through four modules each day that disguise learning as fun.
This exciting week begins on June 24th, when Kelly Riley & Kelly Fetterolf will direct the Camp Invention Geo-Quest pro-gram at Pinewood. Working in teams, children become expe-dition trainees, navigating their way to special treasure-filled caches and creating solutions to challenges posed by youth from around the world. They will be embarking on a global adventure, uncovering hidden messages from the Earth inves-tigating several extreme natural wonders of the world, and building a device to launch international ducks back home.
In the Cache Dash™ module, children navigate their way to treasure-filled caches and solve global challenges from youth around the world. Tools are invented to reveal hidden mes-sages while exploring the Earthy realms of sky, sea, land and underground in the Ecoverse™ module. In the I Can Invent: Launchitude™ module, children will take apart broken or un-used appliances using real tools and re-engineer the gears to invent an awesome Duck Chucking Device! Finally, in the Amazing Atlas Games™ module, classic high-energy games will be fused with global fun.
Local educators will facilitate program modules, and enthusias-tic high school and college students will serve as Leadership Interns – ensuring that one staff member is in place for every eight children.
Every registration includes a free Camp Invention t-shirt. Availability is limited, so visit www.campinvention.org or call 800.968.4332 to reserve your child’s spot today!

Green School - Earth Day Celebration 2013 Pinewood students were actively engaged with a variety of classroom activi-
ties on Earth Day, April 22nd. The big event for the day was the awesome inter-
active program, Unique Game Show, which was provided by our PTA.
Grade levels approached the gym anticipating another informative program filled with in-
formation about good recycling practices. But instead of sitting quietly, students danced,
shouted, and jumped with enthusiasm as DJ J.T. involved all students in learning more ways to
conserve, reduce, recycle, and reuse. Our day concluded with a wonderful sing-along under
the direction of Mrs. Mahoney. Dressed in green with smiles on their faces, the children sang
using hand motions. It was a beautiful closing to a wonderful Earth Day at Pinewood.
Night of a Thousand Stars Thank you to all the families
that participated in a Night of a Thousand Stars. We had ap-proximately 900 people enjoy-
ing the wonderful projects and works of art by each of our stu-
dents displayed throughout the school. There were make and
take activities, relay races, games, and a fashion show centered around our Green
School theme. A fun time was had by all!
