“A Church Inspired by
the Word and Empowered
by the Holy Spirit.”
ALL ARE WELCOME!
The Pilgrim Messenger
Did you know that Pilgrim will be
celebrating 93 years as a church on the
fourth Sunday in August? Our Anniversary
co-chairs will invite you to serve in many
capacities as we prepare to celebrate and
thank God for our GREAT church! Are you
spiritually and physically
ready to celebrate this mile-
stone occasion?
During worship on
the third and fourth
Sundays in July, I will be
preaching from the theme,
“The Theology of Fasting,”
and teaching and preaching
from Daniel 1, Matthew 4,
and Mark 9:14-29. You
might ask, "What is a
Fast?"
First of all, a fast is a
spiritual discipline whereby
one voluntarily withdraws
from eating and drinking
certain foods and beverages. Fasting is to
the spirit as fertilizer is to plants, kindling to
a fireplace, a drummer to a band, and
gasoline to a car’s engine. Fasting gives
us the spiritual power we need to do
ministry! Fasting gives us the inner ear to
hear God’s voice/will clearly, to understand
God’s Word more plainly, to act with
greater faith and clarity, and to serve
others with power from on high!
A "Daniel Fast" is named after the
Old Testament prophet, Daniel, who was
taken captive as a teenager to Babylon to
serve in King Nebuchadnezzar’s court.
Daniel refused to eat the exotic meats and
fine wine offered to him and his three
fellow friends.
He begged the palace master to
allow him to eat pulse (vegetables) and
drink water for 10 days to prove that he
would remain as healthy as those who ate
the food offered by the king. Daniel chose
to obey God and to follow the Jewish
dietary laws (see
Leviticus) rather than
receive favor and special
treatment by the pagan
king. “After the end of
ten days, it was observed
that they appeared better
and fatter (healthier) than
all of the young men who
had been eating the royal
rations. So the guard
continued to withdraw
their royal rations and the
wine they were to drink,
and gave them
vegetables.”
(Daniel 1:15-16)
In order for us to be spiritually fit to
celebrate our 93rd church anniversary, I
am asking all members and friends of
Pilgrim to join me on Sunday, August 1,in
a "Daniel Fast"—a ten-day period of
prayer and fasting, eating only vegetables
and fruit and drinking water. If you are not
able to fast because of medical reasons,
please pray with us as we offer our
bodies, minds, and spirit to God in this
way. What are we praying and fasting
for? We are praying and fasting for
spiritual breakthroughs for our church,
families, and communities! Expect
miracles as we approach our 93rd church
anniversary.

YOUTH SUMMIT
Minister David Sidney, one of Pilgrim’s youth
leaders, has announced “CROSSOVER,” a 3-day
youth summit for ages 12 to 19 years from Wednesday
through Friday, July 21-23, to be held at Rock Church
located at 6732 Harrison Avenue in Rockford.
The primary initiatives of this summit are to (1)
cultivate spiritual growth and (2) give students a hands-
on missions and service experience through work-
shops, speakers, music, evangelism, and more. The
theme this year is, “Do you see 20/20?” Local worship
leaders and some from Chicago and Tampa, Florida will
challenge students to consider what it means to follow
Jesus during the next decade.
It is anticipated that over 100 students will be
represented from Rockford. The enrollment fee of $55
covers all training and teaching, food, transportation,
lodging, and much more. Pilgrim has an initiative to
sponsor as many of our students as possible.

when the House of Refuge and Banner of Truth churches were guests at Pilgrim.
Pilgrim honored its 2010 graduates from high schools and colleges as well as
all promoted students on Sunday, June 27, 2010, during morning worship
and at a reception that followed in the Nancy Smith Youth Center. (See
graduate information in the June issue of the “Messenger.” Minister Willie
Reed delivered an inspiring and encouraging message during morning
worship. Special remarks were made by Rev. Catherine Scott Jackson (at

Ministry Focus for 2010: “Lord, Make Me A Witness For Jesus Christ.”
PILGRIM’S MEN WERE SMOKIN’ (LITERALLY)
the potatoes he had sliced earlier;
and Pastor Board sautéed peppers
for the fajitas. T. L. Weddle brought
his home-made sweet potato pies
and Parnell Smith came with ribs.
With great cooperation from
wives and other women and men of
Pilgrim, four tables laden with food
were ready by the time the hungry
guests arrived early afternoon! Big
hits were the chess pies baked by
Shawndolyn Smith and the spicy
rice dish made by Joy Tolbert.
After the turkey was done and
the food had been served, some of
the men posed in their chef’s hats, as
they had truly earned the right to
wear the high-domed symbols of true
culinary artists!
The cookout was complete with
watermelon and lemonade!
Diners from all over the city
came to share in this wonderful
event of food and fellowship.
Pastor Board said that if anyone
left hungry, it would be their
fault only! Hats off (chef’s
hats, that is) to the men of The
Pilgrim Brotherhood. Their
sign above left no doubt as to
who they are and what was
happening!
After a stormy Friday night, Saturday,
June 19, dawned with a bright blue
sky and clear rain-washed air—a
perfect day for the men of Pilgrim to
show their skills on the grills!
Had you arrived early, you would
have seen Deacon Oliver Emerson
lovingly hand slicing fresh white
potatoes with a very, very large knife;
Leonard Tolbert (President of the
Brotherhood Ministry) manning several
grills including one with a turkey turn-
ing on a rotisserie; Pastor Kenneth
Board using a thermometer to check
his pork loin on the smoker; Michael
King flipping burgers — well, you get
the picture!
Later, the men seemed to be no
strangers to the kitchen as Remere
DuBois assembled his Mississippi
banana pudding; Deacon Oliver fried
