Phonics Mastery

Survey

By Julie Vazquez &

Missy Glavey-Labedz

What is Phonics?

• Decode words by identifying and blending letter-sound correspondences into words.

• It entails the process of converting letters (graphemes) into sounds (phonemes) and blending the sounds to form a word.

• Phonics, which is a visual/written strategy is preceded by phonemic awareness, which is auditory.

Phonics Mastery Survey –

How to Administer• Use this survey to assess the elements of phonics.

• Do not use it to assess sight word knowledge.

• Reproduce letters and words in survey (found on p. 456,

Appendix C.30 in DeVries) on 3x5 index cards in large,

lowercase letters.

• Document the child’s progress on a separate sheet of paper.

• In the first section, stop if the child makes more than 10

errors.

• In subsequent sections, stop if the child makes 5 or more

errors.

• When sounds are incorrect, write the sound the child makes

above the word.

Now it’s your turn!

Final Thoughts• In each section, focus on the element

you are assessing.

• This assessment is a great way to

isolate problems students may be

having in reading.

• Informs instruction, and allows for

teachers and reading coaches to use

more specific intervention strategies.
