Pescara, the gateway to the rugged mountainous Abruzzo region, is framed by the snowy peaksof the Apennine Mountains. The land tumbles through the hilltop villages and down to the bluewaters of the Adriatic Ocean. In the town of Pescara itself, the long ten-mile stretches of wide, clean and sandy beaches and superb food and wine, offer many inviting opportunities to itsvisitors. These are the perfect conditions for a relaxing break for families, or as a restful preludebefore venturing into the mountains or hiking through the region’s many national parks.

THE CITY
Photo: Vincepal
Pescara is a relatively modern city, particularly given the history of other Italian centres. Yet what it lacks inhistorical landmarks, it more than makes up for inatmosphere, fantastic food and endless sunkissed sandybeaches.
The city was originally two small shing villages, which were merged by the fascist government in 1927. The riverPescara that divides the city into the north and the southas it ows down from the mountains has also shaped thecity’s history.
For many, Pescara is a port or a train station on the way to another destination, and indeed you can catch a ferryfrom the city to Croatia, jump on a bus to Rome or headinland into the enticing Abruzzo countryside. However, after extensive recent redevelopment, the city is attractingan increasing number of visitors who enjoy swimming inthe warm waters of the Adriatic and nding a tastyseafood lunch down by the harbour in one of thesherman’s huts/restaurants. Others adore picking upsome designer names in the city centre, before recliningwith a coee in the elegant Piazza Rinascita. And there arethose who can barely wait for the sun to set before hittingthe cocktail bar and the beachside nightclubs.

DINING

Being right next to the sea, seafood dishes are plentiful and of high quality at pretty much every restaurant – fromthe exclusive eateries to the beachside cafés. ThePescarese are also keen on cooking their dishes with chillior peperoncino, which, according to traditional belief, helped drive away evil spirits. One of Pescara’s specialitiesis Polpi in purgatorio, cuttlesh cooked in tomatoes, peppers and garlic.
For particularly cheap but tasty food, it’s worth heading to Pescara port, where many shermen have converted theirwaterside huts (travocchi) into very small restaurants, often only seating as few as ve people. Try therecommended regional dishes, Brodetto - a sh soup withmussels, sh and tomatoes and a hunk of bread.
