Peace Notes MARCH 2012
WEDNESDAY NIGHT LENTEN DRAMAS
In the five Wednesdays of Lent this year, we will see The Five Faces of Lent: a
dramac series that features five of the men connected with the crucifixion and
death of Jesus. We will look upon Judas, the betraying disciple; Caiaphas, the
high priest who engineered the plot against Jesus; Barrabas, the thief who was
released from his death sentence instead of Jesus; Dismas, the thief who was
crucified with Jesus on Calvary and became a believer on the cross; and Peter,
the braggadocios disciple and fierce defender of Jesus, who in the end denied
him three mes. As we take this journey together, we will see a bit of ourselves
in each of these five men and see what a difference Jesus’ presence can make in a life. We will also cele-
brate the season with the Holden Evening Prayer Service.
Wednesday Lenten Worship begins on February 29th
and runs through March 28th
. Services are at 5:30 p.m.
and 7:00 p.m. Wednesday Lenten Suppers will be served from 5-7:00pm.
What is Lent? Lent is the Chrisan season of preparaon before Easter. Ash Wednesday marks the first day, or the
start of the season of Lent, which begins 40 days (not including Sundays) prior to Easter. The forty days
of Lent recall the 40-day fast of Jesus in the wilderness a3er his bapsm (Ma5hew 4:2, Luke 4:1-2) and
Moses' 40-day fast on Mount Sinai (Exodus 34:28).
Lent is a me when we prepare for Easter by observing a period of prayer, service, moderaon, self-
examinaon and spiritual discipline. The purpose is to set aside me for reflecon on Jesus Christ - his
suffering and his sacrifice, his life, death, burial and resurrecon.
Experience Lent at Word of Peace Wednesdays, February 29-March 28
Lenten Dinners - 5:00-7:00pm Lenten Worship - 5:30 and 7:00 p.m.

“I have learned to be content with whatever I have. I know what
it is to have li5le, and I know what it is to have plenty. In any and
all circumstances I have learned the secret of being well-fed and
of going hungry, of having plenty and of being in need. I can do
all things through him who strengthens me.” (Philippians 4:11b-13)
What does “contentment” feel like? This is a difficult queson in
our current culture. When surveys have asked “How much is
enough?” responses have consistently been “Twenty percent
more than I have now.” If that is true, how do we break the
endless circle this leads us toward—it is always “twenty percent
more.” We are told over and over every day—“You don’t have
enough…What you have is fragile and could be gone at any mo-
ment…You have to go get more!” These messages come from a
world focused on scarcity.
In this seWng how do we understand our relaonship with God?
God is creator—we are God’s creatures. How do we live in rela-
onship with our creator? Marn Luther reminds us in his expla-
naon of the First Arcle of the Apostles’ Creed “that God has
created me and all that exists…God daily and abundantly pro-
vides…all the necessies and nourishment for this body and
life…out of pure, fatherly, and divine goodness and mercy, with-
out any merit or worthiness of mine at all!” It is in this relaon-
ship that we recognize that God has abundantly provided us
with all that we need. Living in that abundance we give of the
blessings we have received.
If we focus on the scarcity, we never have enough. When we
focus on God’s abundant blessings, there is more than we can
ever imagine. Recognizing God’s abundant blessings we experi-
ence Paul’s message to the Philippians in our own lives. We can
be content with what we have because we know that we are
blessed and can “do all things through him who strengthens us.”

Pastor Krista Strum Faith Formation Pastor
Why? This is a queson that as a parent, former teacher,
and now pastor, I get asked a lot. Why is the sky blue? Why do I
need to eat my peas? Why do I need to sit down and be quiet?
Why do bad things happen? Why???
One of the things I love about children and adolescents is their in-
quisive nature, their willingness to ask quesons. Unfortunately
for some, as we age we tend to ask less quesons or believe that
their quesons are foolish or insignificant. This is unfortunate be-
cause both faith and knowledge are formed through quesoning,
exploring, and wondering.
Let’s spend some me this Lent intenonally reflecng and won-
dering. Let’s take some me to wonder about a symbol that is cen-
tral to our lives of faith… something very visible in our daily lives…
The Cross.
Have you ever wondered…
Why does the cross maer so much to Chris!ans?
Why did God use such violent means?
How do we share this story with our children?
What does the cross say about God?
You have the opportunity to join with the pastors and others from
Word of Peace in a special 6-week Lenten event, Making Sense of
the Cross. We will have a 10-15 minute lesson by David Lose from
Luther Seminary, and we will spend some me reflecng on the
presentaon materials, and asking quesons. All are welcome to
join us for this study.

SECOND SUNDAY IN LENT

We are called by Jesus not only to walk behind
him on his way to the cross, but we are also
called to take up the cross and follow.

THIRD SUNDAY IN LENT
Pastor Ron Prasek
“Jesus Launches Occupy Temple Protest”
When we look at some of the great human or-
ganizaons that have gone out of business, we
need always to look at ourselves and our
church so that we remain true to God’s Pur-
pose for us.
Scripture Readings: John 2:13-22; 1 Corinthians
1:18-25; Exodus 20:1-17; Psalm 19
March 18 & 19
FOURTH SUNDAY IN LENT
Pastor Krista Strum
“Hide it Under a Bushel? NO!”
“For God so loved the world” is emblemac of
the central message of the Chrisan faith. We
see John 3:16 at sporng events, on posters
and helmets, etched on jewelry and even on
coffee cups. But the citaon isn’t going to root
the gospel on people’s lives. It is an encounter
with the light of Christ that transforms us.
Scripture Readings: John 3:14-21; Numbers 21:4-
9; Psalm 107:1-3, 17-22; Ephesians 2:1-10
March 25 & 26
FIFTH SUNDAY IN LENT
Pastor Ron Prasek
“We Wish to See Jesus” Persons living or dead whom people would like
to have dinner with, Jesus is always in the top
five. While we can’t see him with our physical
eyes, we can see Jesus with the eyes of our
Heart.
Scripture Readings: Hebrews 5:5-10; Psalm 51:1-
12; Jeremiah 31:31-34; John 12:20-33
