CELL INJURY:MECHANISM &

CONSEQUENCES

4th September, 2015

Prepared by : PBL 5

2

ADAPTATION VS CELL INJURY

Cell injury is a reversible or irreversible conditions which occur after the limits of adaptive response to a stimulus are exceeded

Cells may recover if the injury is mild and transient (reversible) but if the stress is severe and progressive, cell death occurs (irreversible)

CAUSES OF CELL INJURY

Oxygen Deprivation (Hypoxia)Chemical Agents Infectious AgentsImmunological ReactionsGenetic FactorsNutritional ImbalancesPhysical AgentsAgeing

5

REVERSIBLE INJURY

Cellular swelling: Inability to maintain ion and fluid homeostasis

Fatty change : Lipid vacuoles in the cytoplasm

MECHANISMS OF CELL INJURY

Mitochondrial damage Influx of Calcium Ions Membrane damage Protein misfolding/DNA damage
