Regular verbs in English are conjugated in the past tense ending in "ed". Although it seems to be a very simple rule, there are different patterns for adding the endings to the verb stem. Here are some of the most common patterns.(A) ENDS IN A LONG VOWEL + CONSONANT OR CONSONANTS Add the ed termination.
(B) ENDS IN A SHORT VOWEL + CONSONANT Double the consonant and add the ed termination.

Irregular English verbs are difficult for students to memorize. By grouping verbs with similar changes together, you can remember them more easily.
