The Holy Sacrifice of the Mass is the self same sacrifice of Christ on the Cross made present to us. Christ died once and for all for the Salvation of mankind, but gave His Apostles and their successors, the means to offer that same sacrifice to God the Father until the end of time through the Mass. He instituted this mystery at the Last Supper when he offered the bread and wine saying, ‘this is My Body’ and ‘this is My Blood’, ‘do this in memory of me’.

Through the prayers of consecration the bread and wine are turned substantially into the Body and Blood of Our Lord and offered to God the Father.

As well as making Christ’s atoning death on the Cross present to us, the Mass connects us to the eternal life promised to us by Christ himself. By being in Christ’s real presence at Holy Mass and by receiving Our Lord, Body and Blood, Soul and Divinity, in Holy Communion we have a taste of the eternal life He promised to us.
