PARTICIPATORY MULTI-HAZARD DISASTER RISK REDUCTION

PROJECT in ARMENIA

funded by DIPECHOand Oxfam GB

2010 – 2011

Principal objective

To increase resilience and reduce vulnerability of local communities and

national institutions by supporting strategies that enable them

to prepare for, mitigate and respond to natural disasters

Location of operation – 10 communities in Vayots Dzor region

Activities and results

COMMUNITY EMERGENCY GROUPS (CEG)composed from 15 volunteers are established in all project communities

CEG is divided into subgroups:• rescuers• first aid providers• organizers

CEG members are trained on DRR and First Aid provision

Trainings are provided in close cooperation with ARCS and Regional Rescue Department

CEG are equipped with first aid kits, special equipment and clothing for

rescuers

• Participatory hazard mapping and community emergency plans are developed in 10 communities• Plans and maps are distributed among Regional Rescue Department Regional Government

• 60 teachers of project communities’ schools are trained on DRR and First Aid provision

• Teachers provided trainings for about 350 children of secondary school

• Painting competition on DRR themes is conducted among 200 school children of all project communities’ schools

First aid kits , fire stands , printing materials are provided to schools of 10

project communities

Small-scale low cost demonstrative mitigation projects are conducted in

project communities

CEGs participated in development of proposals for mitigation projects

Local governments made contribution in all projects . After completion the

projects are handed over to communities for further maintenance

In close cooperation with regional state rescue department and regional

government the simulation event/rescue drills for CEGs is conducted in June, 2011

Result:• CEG members demonstrated the obtained knowledge and skills as well as cooperation with the regional rescue department in the cases of emergency

PROJECT SUPPORTING ACTIVITIES

The database of project beneficiaries is developedAfter completion of training on first aid provision the additional training via SMS is conducted for beneficiaries In the framework of livelihood project implemented by Oxfam GB Armenia our project beneficiaries were provided SMS on forecast during March-May, 2011
