•Mainly found in Doujinshi or amateur manga.

•Makes up a large percentage of manga found at Comiket.

Gintama• Originally a manga started in 2003 by Hideaki Sorachi.

• Manga was serialized in Shonen Jump

• Anime shown on TV Tokyo

• Plot: Instead of Americans, aliens called Amanto open the ports of Japan at the end of the Edo period. Gintoki is a samurai who fought in the war against the Amanto but now does odd jobs with the otaku Shinpachi, the insanely strong Kagura and her giant dog Sadaharu.

• Gintama parodies both historical events, folktales, and modern pop-culture.

• Historical Parodies: The Bakufu - Tokugawa government. The Shinsengumi - the special police force of the late Tokugawa Shogunate. Kondou Isami. Hijikata Toshizou, and Okita Souji. There is a series that takes place at Ryugu Palace.

• Constantly pokes fun at Shonen Jump and the editor/writer relationship. Also talks about Otaku.
