Transcript of Paris Basin and Mezzogiorno

Core and Peripheral regions in Europe

Paris and Mezzogiorno Paris Basin is to Europe what the GDA is to Ireland – mild

climate, low lying, good farmland, good communication links and well developed secondary and tertiary sector.

Mezzogiorno is Italy’s BMW region – more rural, generally poorer, dependent on primary activities and with a harsher climate.

Also Mezzogiorno is home to the Camorra (Naples based Mafia) – means that efforts to tackle underdevelopment of the region are often stopped by corruption

To draw the Paris basin:

1. Draw a Hexagon2. Draw France inside the

hexagon3. Draw the basin

Paris Basin Geology – PB is a gentle down-fold in sedimentary rocks

(syncline)

Different rock types = different soil types = specialisation in Agriculture. Different farming areas known as Pays

Known as “Granary of France” or the Ile De France

Well drained by Seine, Loire and tributaries

Climate – maritime (mild) in west, continental (hotter) in east

Mezzogiorno

Where is the Mezzogiorno in this map?

What two plates does it lie on?

2015 Exam (Higher Level)

Mezzogiorno Mediterranean Climate (Hot, Dry summers)

Landscape dominated by the Apennine mountains (85% of the region is upland or mountainous)

Soil quality is generally poor (isolated pockets of good agricultural land around Naples and Puglia)

Region is tectonically active – earthquakes and volcanoes (e.g. Vesuvius)

Granite and Limestone are main rock types in area.

Agriculture – Exam Question

Mark in the number of tourists visiting the Mezzogiorno

Why are so few tourists visiting the region?

Test – Common Mistakes Misreading the question/not understanding the question

e.g question on primary activities in an Irish Region – some answers discussed the Burren and its landscape.

Not sketching a diagram/map e.g. Map of Ireland showing the GDA and a transport route

Not writing enough (2 sentences = 1 SRP)

Vague or waffly sentences e.g. “the weather is very bad in the west” instead of “the rainfall is high in the west due to relief rain, with precipitation over 2000 mm annually in places”
