...TODAY’S pArenTTEACHING RESPECT and TOLERANCE
When we teach children to respect themselves and oth-ers, we are urging them to be tolerant of differences.
Teach your child that she has value, and should treat herself with respect. It’s easy to demonstrate it with tangible examples. When we brush our teeth every day, we show respect for keeping our mouth healthy. Share other examples with your child.
Respond to children’s disrespectful comments. It’s perfectly normal for children to blurt out comments about others that we construe as rude or disrespectful. Point
out that it doesn’t feel good to be made fun of, or to be stared at, and that we wouldn’t want people to do that to us
Share stories that demon-strate respect and tolerance. Some books that offer the message of respect and toler-ance: The Christmas Meno-rahs: How a Town Fought Hate; My Head is Full of Colors; Ellis Island: Doorway to Freedom.
