“These images are saturated with a Kafkaesque sense of entrapment but also a feeling of disenchantment and futility, solitude and melancholy that seems to point to an underlying contemporary ennui or dissatisfaction with the world at large”
- Phaidon Press Limited 2006
WORKING METHOD - CAPTURE
• Shoots with at 4x5 Sinar P2 and scans the negatives
• He uses has used digital backs but he says that he doesn’t get a large enough file that way.
• Digital Back = 180MB file = 24”x30” max print
• Scanned 4x5 negative = 500MB File
WORKING METHOD - LIGHTING
• Mostly uses available light• Occasionally use reflectors• Rarely uses electronic flash
WORKING METHOD – IMAGE MANIPULATION
• Scans with no color profile- He says that this give him a very soft image- Then does all tonal adjustments in Photoshop
• Photoshop workflow is relatively simple- Contrast, color, sharpening- Saturation and perspective Issues- Sometimes some reconstruction by adding or subtracting
elements
• Color is a critical part of preproduction - He is very conscious of the color of his model and how it relates
to the environment- Very little color manipulation goes on in postproduction
