What is Pandora FMS?

Pandora FMS roots

Pandora was created in 2002 in the security department of an international bank

with the objective to maintenance of systems and services by technical staff with

strong experience in a IT sector. With the passage of time and input from customers and users Pandora FMS became a vital tool to support the business

Who is developing Pandora FMS?

l  Pandora FMS is developed by Ártica Soluciones Tecnológicas LTD.

l  Pandora FMS to be OpenSource Software, has code contributed by dozens of

people around the world.

l  Artica acts as project leader and driving force of development, and also develops

other OpenSource projects:

8 (*) Public data from Sourceforge and Openideas.info

Who uses Pandora?

l  Pandora FMS has a user community of more than 2.000 users and over 500.000 downloads (*).

l  Customers like Telefónica have chosen Pandora FMS to replace other monitoring

tools (HP OVO, Tivoli, NetIQ) achieving significant cost savings.

Who uses Pandora?

What and how to monitor?

11

What monitors: ITIL

12

Availability management

Trouble management in a IT infrastructure. Possibility of calculating MTTR and MTBF. Possibility of initiating recovery actions.

Service level management

Service level reports of differents elements. Business metrics, SLA Management, OLA's and KPI's.

Capacity managemant

Historical monitoring-Performance and Failure. Periodical reports with custom graphics. Trends detection.

What monitors: Technically

13

Networks

Full support for SNMP, TCP, ICMP, etc ... Automatic network discovery. Intermediate network probes for complex networks Automatic and manual topological maps

Servers

With agent or remotely. All the OS (Windows, Linux, AIX, HPUX, Solaris) Agent collects information from the server. In terms of OS or application.

WEB

Step by Step navigation (sessions). Loading times (user experience). Content verification. Valid to verify web webservices and API's.

Sensors CPD's sensors (temperature, flood ..) Electricity consumption. It integrates with various devices on the market.

How do Pandora the monitoring ?

l  Agents running on servers used to collect information directly from them.

l  You can use remote polling Networking: SNMP, TCP, ICMP ... and

more complex tests: transactional Web, DNS verification, mail, etc ...

l  Centralizes all the information in a database.

l  Enables users to view that information and manage the tool from a

web interface we called Console.

l  The Pandora server is the one who receives information from the

agents, or who makes remote network testing.

System Architecture

15

Why choose Pandora FMS!?

16

Benefits of using Pandora FMS

l  Extreme Scalability (100.000 + servers)

l  Same tool for different environments and Simple management (GUI).

l  TCO very low compared to other similar solutions, even with costs

of leave (OpenSource!).

l  Integration with business (ITSM) and Scalable licensing model.

l  Access to the source code for customizations in-house

(OpenSource!)

l  Evaluation time (time-to-value) very fast (OpenSource!) 17

Competition advantages

l  Best cost / benefit.

l  Increased flexibility and integration capability.

l  More potent agents and platform.

l  Linear scalability.

l  Capacity and historical indefinitely.

l  WEB Multi Light interface.

l  Number of features.

l  International Support.

l  Great user community.

18

OpenSource vs. Enterprise

l  Built on the Open version: Benefit from all knowledge of the community.

l  Simplify administration: Using tools designed to manage thousands of

systems simultaneously (political, MetaConsole, wizards ...)

l  Professional support. For sure you´ll sleep better if you have the

personal support of the people who developed Pandora and has

experience in operating in large environments.

l  Several unique Enterprise features.

19

Licensing of Pandora FMS

l  The Enterprise version has a cost:

ü  Annual license fee.

ü  The price includes enterprise code, support 8/5 and maintenance.

ü  It is licensed by number of monitored servers or devices.

SOFTWARE + SUPPORT + MAINTENANCE =

20

Pandora FMS specific training

l  There is a official Pandora FMS training.

l  It includes certification.

l  Two specific programs of 15 hours each.

ü  PAT: Pandora FMS Administration Training.

ü  PAE: Pandora FMS Engineer Training.

Pandora FMS Technology

26

Pandora FMS technology

l  PHP5 application server.

l  AJAX based web interface and HTML5.

l  Web Services Integration through XML / RPC and REST.

l  MySQL5 DBMS.

l  Experimental support for Oracle and PostgreSQL

l  Modular development in Perl5.

l  Plugins in VBScript, PowerShell, Perl, Python or shell scripts.

27

Simple collection of information.

l  Pandora FMS does not use dozens of layers of abstraction that slow getting

information from the machine.

l  It uses native commands to collect information directly on the machine.

l  Use the native Windows API to get the information directly.

l  PERL on Unix Agent (Common).

l  Agent C + + on Windows.

28

Windows-specific agent.

l  Get information directly from the engine performance manager for

Windows (PDH).

l  Get WMI information directly on your own motor.

l  Integrated Motor regular expressions for text processing logs

(libpcre).

l  You can read data directly from an ODBC source.

l  Watchdog integrated detection and restart real-time processes and

services.

l  Lee directly (without using WMI) Windows events, with several

levels of filtering.

l  Watchdog integrated detection and restart real-time processes and

services.

29

Modular plugin system

l  Allows extend the functionality of the agent with complex

tests as defined in any language (VBS, Java, scripting,

etc).

l  Allows batch testing of complex and incorporate a simple

and autonomous.

l  It can leverage existing monitoring mechanisms and

integrate them into Pandora FMS.

l  The modules are interchangeable and reusable across

different agents.

30

Integration facilities

There are several ways of integration with Pandora FMS through several mechanisms:

l  Pandora management tool for command line, for better integration into scripts.

l  Direct suites Intregración IBM Tivoli and HP OpenView

l  WEB API easy to use (REST).

l  Export / Import with CSV.

l  URL actions in the GUI allow you to contextual integration.

31

Flexible and adaptable architecture

l  Agents can connect to the server using proxies (HTTP mode / Connect)

l  Agents can be proxies for other agents,

centralizing all communication with the

destination server.

l  Communication is always from the

agent to the server.

l  It uses the standard protocol (IANA)

Tentacle, which we developed

ourselves.

32

High Capacity / Scalability

l  The Meta-Console, implements a way to distribute the monitoring of different Pandora FMS servers physically independent.

l  Each server has its own database,

console and server, and of course their

own agents, alerts, reports, and even

users, groups and policies.

l  We can control tens of thousands of

devices in this way.

33

Pandora FMS Requirements

34

Basic requirements

l  Runs on basic servers and also use the multicore-systems, using the hardware provided to the maximun capacity.

l  Parallel processing: Can use different physical servers, allowing a progressive

scalability by just adding new servers.

l  Average server: 4GB RAM, Multiple core CPU (2000 agents).

l  Works on Linux.

35

Supported systems

l  Servers:

l  RedHat Enterprise Server and CentOS.

l  SUSE Enterprise Linux 10.x, 11.x

l  Debian / Ubuntu Linux.
