Palm Beach Watercolor November 2018

Fun with Yupo by Marilyn Valiente

Marilyn Valiente is a Cuban born artist. She is President of Miami Watercolor Society. Her demonstration on Thursday, November 8th, will reveal the exciting textures, colors and mark making that is possible when working her abstracts on Yupo. Yupo is a great paper to loosen up and work intuitively. Because the pigment sits on the surface of the paper ~ the colors are brilliant and there are no mistakes and you can always remove the pigment and get back to the white of the paper. Marilyn will start with mark making and then move to layering pigment: scraping, dropping alcohol, lifting with stencils, all to create a spontaneous and unique abstract painting.

Please join us on Thursday, November 8th from 6 - 8:30 pm Enjoy snacks, free gifts, raffles prizes , door prizes and visiting with your friends!

Ask the Watercolor Doctor

Question: When can one call oneself an “artist”?

Answer:

This is a very interesting question, which each one of us considers at some time in our artistic journey. The PBWS membership spans a wide range of artistic experience and achievement, and so the answers will undoubtedly vary from person to person. So just who gets to call himself or herself an “artist”? Can it be quantified by certain standards?

There are those of us who are very dedicated to making our art, who spend hours thinking about it and working at it. We seldom show our work or participate in any measurable ways in the art scene. Yet we feel deeply that we are artists, and we choose to call ourselves such.

In contrast, there are certain specific events in our artistic careers which can propel us toward considering ourselves to be counted as artists. These include having one’s work published, winning a number of awards, having a one-person show, getting accepted into quality juried exhibitions and becoming a signature of a national or high level watercolor society which juries for this honor. When these things start to happen to you, you begin to see yourself in a more professional way. Your feelings of commitment to your work increase, and your attitudes about who you are begin to morph into something new as well.

My own artistic journey, which has included all of the above, seemed to happen in a series of small steps, over a period of years. With each early achievement I questioned whether I could call myself an artist without feeling it was all really a hoax. But as accomplishments mounted, I suppose there was no denying it. Nowadays I prefer to say I’m a watercolorist, rather than an artist, in most cases. It just feels more comfortable to me. I like the specificity of it, and I feel that perhaps it sounds less boastful.

In the end, it’s up to each one of us to determine the right answer and the right time for that answer to be appropriate. Good luck along your journey!

PRESENTING ARTIST……..ADRIENNE WALKER

“SYMPHONY IN COLOR” November 17, 2018 to January 11, 2019

I have been passionate about art my entire life.Using Oils,Watercolor and Acrylics or Stone, as an artist I enjoy creating worlds in many dimensions. My work is created with passion from within, allowing brushstrokes to invite the viewer into my art.Experimenting with the flow of mixing watercolor, acrylic and or gouache creates stories in my minds eye.The challenge of keeping the transparency of watercolor while putting it down next to gouache or acrylic paints adds strength to my art. I love the challenge of trying something new and creating different emotions in my work.Adrienne is President of Palm Beach Watercolor Society
