Note the relationship of each boy to his boat. The boys are holding their boats as a mother might hold her small child. Find an image that supports the idea of a "mother/child" relationship.

                              

In 1873, the same year Homer painted Boat Builders, he also illustrated Lowell's book The Courtin.' All of Homer's illustrations for that book were silhouettes.
