Sixteenth Sunday of Ordinary Time Reflection: Mark 6:30-34
"Now what?" It's a difficult thing to hear, isn't it? The train comes late, a child
unexpectedly cries, and the latest public policy debate flares up in the news. Life
throws us curveballs, and we have no choice but to adapt. Jesus and the Apostles find
themselves in that exact situation in today's Gospel.
The Apostles have returned from their two-by-two missionary journey.
As Jesus hears all of their stories, he knows they
need time to recover and refresh. "Come away by
yourselves to a deserted place and rest a while."
Their wilderness retreat is short-lived, however, as
eager crowds discover their location. Jesus is well
aware of the needs of his disciples. Still, as he
looks out at the crowd, "His heart was moved with
pity for them, for they were like sheep without a
shepherd." The rest break is over. "He began to
teach them many things."
For those of us who have experienced a taste of much-needed relaxation only to have
it taken away abruptly, perhaps we surmise what the Apostles might have been
feeling in that moment. But Jesus isn't being inconsiderate of the Apostles needs. He
offers them - and us - a lived lesson. St. John Paul II wrote, "The whole of Christ's life
was a continual teaching: his silences, his miracles, his gestures, his prayer, his love
for people, his special affection for the little and the poor, his acceptance of the total
sacrifice on the Cross for the redemption of the world" (On Catechesis in Our Time,
9). In Jesus' choice to teach, we see all of these things: sacrificial love, concern for the
marginalized, and priority of people's needs over personal preference. These aren't
abstract ideals. They're lived realities as we strive to live and love like Jesus. When a
new obstacle confronts you in your life, how do you respond?
Liturgy of the Hours Prayer Group Join: us every Friday at 8:30am
in the church to pray Morning Prayer! We look forward to
uniting our voices with yours as we unlock this great

The Lord Is My Shepherd, There Is Nothing I Shall Want –
One of the most tender images we have of Jesus is that of
the Good Shepherd. Just as a shepherd guides the flock, so
Jesus leads us, his flock, keeping us safe, encouraging us,
placing us on his shoulders when we have strayed as he
draws us back into the fold. The Lord’s work as shepherd of our hearts
is not limited to a time of trial or need in our lives. Jesus is always, ac-
tively leading us and it is the responsibility of each of us as Christians to
listen to the voice of the Good Shepherd and follow him on the path of
life. Not only does Jesus lead us individually as his sisters and brothers,
but also wholly as the Church. The shepherd keeps the flock moving
together as one and goes in search of the lost in order that they may be
one with the Church again. As we journey On Mission for The Church
Alive! we trust in the guidance of Christ the Good Shepherd to lead us
and the Church through this time of change. The Lord does not abandon
his flock and will strengthen us as we draw closer to him in faith and to
each other as the Church. Visit www.onmissionchurchalive.org to

or her fullest potential.
July 22: Children’s Liturgy of the Word 10:30 Mass
In the Gospel today we hear Jesus
say: “...for they were like sheep
without a shepherd; and he began
to teach them many things.” Here
at Holy Sepulcher we are
privileged to have the Good
Shepherd program for children
3-12 years of age. At 9:10a.m, on
Sundays we have the Catechesis of
the Good Shepherd program for
children ages 3-4. In Holy
Sepulcher School we have the
program in Pre-K thru grade 4.
It has been observed that children,
even from the earliest age, eagerly
seek religious experience and find
fulfillment in it only if they are
helped to live this experience in its
deepest, most essential element,
without any “childish” overtones.
When these conditions are present,
young children live their relation-
ship with God in
enchanted wonder and profound
joy which gives them peace in the
satisfaction—it could be said—of
a deep and vital need. It seems the
vital need is for relationship,
which the Bible expresses as
“covenant.”
The Catechesis of the Good
Shepherd is not primarily
academic in character. Rather, it
seeks to be an experience of life
and an education in faith, through
the celebration of an encounter
with the Father, in listening to
Jesus the one Teacher, and in
obedience to the Spirit.
The method Jesus used in his
preaching was the method of
parables, this is, that method
which presents mystery in an
allusive way, thus providing an
inexhaustible means of going ever
more deeply into the mystery.
In the preaching of Jesus the
central theme is the kingdom of
God which is revealed in its:
mysterious nature in the parables
of the: mustard seed, yeast, seed of
grain and inestimable value, in
the parables of the: precious pearl
and hidden treasure and similarity
to a wedding feast, in the parables
of the: ten bridesmaids, and
wedding guests; finally, in calling
forth the response on the part of
the human creature, in particular
in the Pharisee and the publican,
the insistent friend, the good
Samaritan, the sower, the debtor,
the laborers in the vineyard, and
the rich fool.
In confronting the evangelical
maxims of Jesus and meeting the
various human types and situation
that the parables present, the
children become conscious of a
moral idea, of one’s own limits,
weakness, and sin. The child’s
conscience is enlightened in the
certainty of God’s unfailing love
that seeks for the lost sheep,
searches for the lost coin,
welcomes the prodigal son and
continually welcomes us in the
sacrament of reconciliation by
which the covenant is renewed, in
the liberation from sin and in the
renewal of the gift of the Spirit.
