Pastoral Sharings September 2019
Okay. What is the phrase of this picture?
HINT: We’ve heard this phrase before. We have also heard and, I dare say, have said
the phrase, “we’ve never done it that way before.” Both statements are cliché-
ic. We’ve also heard this before also. I am not going to beat this into the ground be-
cause we know what these means.
When the day of Pentecost had come, they were all together in one place. And suddenly from heaven there came
a sound like the rush of a violent wind, and it filled the entire house where they were sitting. Divided tongues, as
of fire, appeared among them, and a tongue rested on each of them. All of them were filled with the Holy Spirit
and began to speak in other languages, as the Spirit gave them ability… So those who welcomed Peter’s mes-
sage were baptized, and that day about three thousand persons were added. Acts 2:1-3, 41
At the beginning of the Pentecost story, the disciples are gathered in the upper room. They
are boxed in by their fear. At the end of the Pentecost story, emboldened by the Spirit, they have moved out of the box of the upper room and into the streets of Jerusalem.
Let’s be real and honest, the first disciples were not super Christians with super powers who never struggled, doubted, or wavered. Truthfully, the arrival of Holy Spirit didn’t
make life easier for the disciples–it created new challenges. If the Holy Spirit had left them alone, they could have gone back to Galilee, gone back to their lives, their jobs and
their families. Instead the Holy Spirit’s arrival pushed them outside the box of a conven-tional life.
The disciples had to manage the growing pains of the young church. They had to deal with money, conflict, and the burdens of managing life in community. The Holy Spirit’s
coming didn’t eliminate these challenges but it did give the disciples an outside the box purpose that enriched their lives and powered their sense of mission.
Like the disciples, we struggle with money issues, conflict and the challenges of managing our common life together. And, just like the disciples we have an outside the
box purpose, bringing the life-giving love of Jesus Christ, to the community around us.
Can we start thinking outside the box? Can we move outside the bricks and mor-
tar box and into the streets? The Holy Spirit says yes. After all, it is the Spirit who brings us to faith in Jesus Christ, the Holy One who proclaims God’s outside the box love
for the world. And it is the Spirit who gives us knowledge of the God who thinks outside
the box, who raised Jesus from the dead after the world crucified him. Think about…” our
founder was so far outside the box that he wouldn't even stay in his own grave!"
Here’s hoping you find time away from the hectic new schedules this Fall 2019.
Pastor Kent

Mondays @ the Parsonage Bible Study [MAP] Mondays 9:30-11 AM
@ Our Savior’s Parsonage, 405 1st Street SE, – Come when you can, leave when you need. –
Join us for coffee, tea and fellowship. We are listening to “Women of the Bible, their
words and why they matter”
Bibles In-the Lion’s Den [BILD] Study Starting September 11thWednesdays 9:00 AM
@ The Lion’s Den, right next to Smokey Hollow (121 S Park St), Fairfax – Come when you can, leave when you need. – Join us for coffee, fellowship and Bible study.
We will start with an extended study called “Genesis Through Revelations”. I have adapted it from a seminary course by the same title, developed by Rev. Dr. Craig Koester (Professor and
Asher O. and Carrie Nasby Chair of New Testament at Luther Seminary, St. Paul).
This course is taught as an Intensive Course in the January midterm, which consisted of 5
six-hours days [later increased to 10 days]. The course description is as follows:
This course follows the sweep of the Biblical story from the dawn of creation to the New
Jerusalem. Narrative portions of the Bible give the course its basic structure, with ma-
jor poetic and prophetic texts, New Testament epistles, and apocalyptic writings woven
in along the way. Students encounter key parts of virtually every Biblical book from the
beginning of Genesis to the end of Revelation. The class is designed so that participants
experience the Scriptures, as words on the page are transformed into sight and sound
through readings, music, drama, and large screen photographs. During course, class
members create their own study Bibles and design materials for teaching the Biblical
story in creative ways.- We will not do this part.
The original outcome was four-fold. Our study will be a little less intense. Through this
study, we will [#1] develop a basic understanding and appreciation for the structure and
flow of the narrative portions of the Bible and their relationship to other texts and [#2]
reflect on the significance of biblical passages for our own faith and life.
This has been one of my most fun ways to encounter the Bible as we will not only study
the Bible, but talk about certain portions and books, see images that connect us with the
scenes and sing songs related with themes. We can do this for 5 weeks or more if the
group chooses. Afterwards, the group will choose a specific book or part for focused
study. This is low key study.
Join us! Bring your preferred Bible! Invite a friend!

THIS IS WORTH REPEATING
AS WE ENTER THE NEW CHURCH YEAR When to Call Your Pastor
Sometimes people wonder when they should call or contact their pastor.
Call your pastor when: [Keep in mind that this is not an exhaustive list]
…you or a loved one is going into the hospital. Whether its a “routine” operation or an emer-
gency visit, your pastor can plan to visit you, a family member, or a friend with God’s Word of
comfort.
…you would like a prayer said for you or a loved one, or even just an acquaintance. Your
pastor is always happy to pray for and with others, and our almighty and merciful God answers
prayer! (Please, let the pastor know if you would like a prayer said publicly during the Divine
Service, otherwise he will keep it confidential. If the prayer is for someone else, please ask his
or her permission first, if you desire the prayer to be public.)
...you are not able to come to church for a prolonged period of time. He can make a home
visit at your availability for a devotion and prayer, and if you so desire, the Lord’s Supper. Your
pastor simply wants you to stay connected to God’s Word and his Sacrament. We are all in con-
stant need of God’s forgiveness and mercy.
…you have a question, concern, or suggestion about something at church. Many questions
can be cleared up easily by simply asking. Likewise, if you have a concern about something at
church, let your pastor know. If you have a suggestion, tell your pastor. Your pastor may not be
able to implement every suggestion, but your input does matter!
…you have an issue in your marriage that is unresolved after one month. If an issue in your
marriage does not go away after one month, then there is certainly a spiritual issue. Often peo-
ple wait until their marriage drastically deteriorates. A Christian marriage needs to be rooted in
God’s Word and built on His love. It is good to be reminded of God’s love, especially as it ap-
plies to you, your spouse, and your relationship. Your pastor can help. (This advice can really go
for any strained relationship.)
…your conscience is troubling you. God does not leave us alone to struggle with temptation
and guilt. He invites us to confess our sin and receive His forgiveness. You can confess your sin
to your pastor in strict confidence and freely receive God’s forgiveness and absolution delivered
to you personally. You’re welcome to come even if no particular sin is troubling you.
…you’re wrestling with a spiritual issue or have a question about something the Bible says.
Questions often come up when you’re talking religion with coworkers and friends, reading/
studying the Bible, or listening to a sermon. Your pastor loves to discuss God’s Word and wants
to see you grow in your understanding of it.
…you know someone who wants to know more about Jesus. Your pastor would love to
meet with him or her to share the hope that we have in Christ. You might offer to personally in-
troduce this person to your pastor. This can make the opportunity a little less intimidating for
someone who is not used to talking with a pastor.
KEEP THIS HANDY THROUGH OUT THE YEAR
