Southeast Side Earth Day
By Sam GomezSgomez@onwnews.com
Although the actual first day of spring was March 20th, on the East Side and in Hegewisch, spring doesn’t officially kick off until little league opening day. Hundreds of children, parents and families gather annually in their new uniforms to proudly walk in the neighborhood. Festivities started in Hegewisch on Saturday April 14th at 9am when the entire Hegewisch Little League, commenced their opening day parade at Opyt’s Funeral Home located at 134th & Baltimore Ave. All 7 major teams and 7 minor teams, their managers, coaches, parents and friends along with the Hegewisch Girls Softball teams were in the parade which ended at the Hegewisch Little League Field on 126th and Carondolet Ave. Hegewisch Little League President, Rey Rodriguez and Vice President -
Majors - Chris Banks welcomed and thanked everyone for such a great turn out of support. First pitches were thrown by 10th Ward Alderman John A. Pope and Alfredo “Jr” Cabrales from Cabrales Auto Repair. Little league baseball is an important part of childhood for many local children and it would not be possible without the support of local businesses
and individuals. “I consider myself blessed and I just want to make sure the kids have somewhere to play,” said Jr. Cabrales, coach of the Yankees and financial supporter of the league. “I want to be the coach that people remember.” Jr. Cabrales went on to say, “I bet everyone remembers their little league coaches, that’s who I want to be.”

Annual Egg Hunt for the Kiddies
Meteor Blazes Across Southeast Side
Juan QuintanaJquintana@onwnews.com
130 children gathered outside the Calumet Park field house in the early afternoon of April 7, 2012.
At the strike of noon the Annual Easter Egg Hunt began, as children ran around and gathered colorful eggs to fill their baskets with.
Officers Darryl Wallace and Yolanda Nowells, of the 4th District, were present alongside Alderman John A. Pope, to help hold the event.
“The Annual Easter Egg Hunt is a chance to help the youth celebrate the Easter season. Overall the turnout was great this year,” stated Pope.
The eggs used during the hunt were donated by the East Side Chamber of Commerce. The South Chicago Parents
and Friends, which provides services for individuals with developmental disabilities, were responsible for dyeing the eggs.
After the egg hunt, families gathered and enjoyed refreshments donated by Griesel Jimenez Stodden Funeral Home. Raffle prizes were also given away to children who found winning tickets in the Easter eggs they searched for. .
Christa TorresCtorres@onwnews.com
In light of all the meteor happenings surrounding Wolf Lake, NASA has come out to say that the blazing fireballs are not all that uncommon. During a time when meteor showers are nearing (mid-April) it is especially bound to happen.
At about 8:20 p.m. on April 11, reports of a downed airplane began circling the community as fire trucks, police officers and ambulances all flocked to Wolf Lake to investigate. upon arrival and aerial helicopter searches, there turned out to be no sign of a possible plane crash.
In fact, Our Neighborhood Times was on the scene and reported back that there were numerous authority figures searching for the basketball size meteor’s site of impact.
Although, nothing turned up during ONT’s time on site, under the assumption that our representatives were not “neuralized” by the Men in Black, sky gazers should expect to see signs of more
meteors as the Lyrid meteor shower will begin at the end of this week.
The Lyrid meteors take place when Earth passes through the tail of the comet, Thatcher. Earth encounters debris left by the comet at about the same time every year.
Anybody interested in seeing such a sight should look to the skies late night April 21 until dawn April 22. Chances are that 10 – 20 meteors per hour will shoot across the sky under a new moon. Guaranteeing a dark sky, perfect for meteor sightings.
until then, happy meteor watching and watch out for any little green men wandering around aimlessly on the East Side… Or maybe, they have an agenda!

Free AJents, Far From OverMarisa MunozMmunoz@onwnews.com
In June of 2011 the Free AJents Jorge (Nasa773) Aguilar, Sergio (Chepo or Merk One) Barbosa, Ryan (Ryebread) Gregory, Brad (A.D.6) Gregory and Mike Lyon, stepped on stage and gave a performance that landed them the title-1st place (and first ever) Southeast Side Battle of the Bands winner. Five months later the guys met up with Itzamna Castrejon of Immaculate Entertainment to claim their grand prize, studio time to record the single “Game Over.” The guys dove in and began recording vocals and instruments, rarely offering an unusable take. Overall, the various elements that combine to create their unique sound blended into one well-crafted product. Rewind nearly 10 years and the band was not yet what it is today. Nasa and Merk One, who knew each other from their high school days, started off making beats together. Nasa also performed in a band called Mama Nuke along with the AJents’ Brad (A.D.6), Ryan (Ryebread) and Mike Lyon. Not long after the band split, the guys teamed up with Merk One and the Free AJents, as we know them today, was created.
“We all got together to practice one day and the chemistry was just there. We all have various musical influences so when we get together to create music we just feed off of each other and create great music,” says Barbosa. November 2010 marked the release of the band’s debut EP “Last Time I Checked.” Each track on the EP displays an eclectic blend of hip-hop, rock and electronica, making for a truly unique, next level sound. “We refused to be pigeon holed into making one particular style of music. Being from the far Southside of Chicago we were exposed to Gangster Rap, House Music, Blues, Jazz, Rock and Hip-Hop. We enjoyed and appreciated all of these different styles and weren’t afraid to say so or show it in our production,” stated Aguilar. The Free AJents have performed at numerous venues including the Double Door, Reggie’s Rock Club, The Elbow Room, and local bars in the Southeast Side and Indiana Area. They have also had the opportunity to open for two groups well known in the hip-hop and rap world; Slum Village and Three Six Mafia. The band will soon be meeting again in the studio to begin recording their second album, “To The Top.” What do you feel is the key behind the band’s chemistry?
Nasa: The key to our bands chemistry is trust and respect. It can become complicated when there are five people with an idea in their head as to how something should sound or come across to an audience. We trust in each other’s abilities as musicians and artist and respect each other as men and friends. Enough so that even if one or more of us isn’t 100% sure about the particular direction of a song or business decision for the group we trust that what is voted upon is the right thing to do. How important is it to you guys to represent the community in all of your band’s efforts? Nasa: I feel it is important to represent our community because these were and still are our stomping grounds. This is where we developed our style. Our original fans are our friends and family. These are the people in our community that saw what we were doing, supported and helped push us to take it to the next level. The more we were exposed to the community, the more fans and friends we made. People like what we are doing and I feel that there is a sense of pride knowing that we are from the same neighborhood. It’s also important to show that it doesn’t matter where you are from or who you know. If you want to accomplish something you just have to go for it. Give it your all no matter what.
As the first winners of the Southeast Side’s BOTB’s you were praised for showing signs of consistently perfecting your craft. What type of advice would you offer for the bands entering this year’s battle? Nasa: “If I could offer any advice to the bands it would be: Don’t sell yourselves short. There is ALWAYS room for improvement. Make sure you’re surrounded with positive dedicated people. Don’t be afraid to speak openly with your band mates about any issues you may have as far as your music and the direction you want to take with your band. It may not always be the same, but like any relationship, communication is key and compromise is necessary.” Describe your music in one word. Nasa: “Fearless” Besides the Southeast Side Summer Fest in June, where can we find the Free AJents performing next? Nasa: We have a couple Chicago shows in the works but nothing confirmed yet. We are looking to start traveling and will be performing in Lansing, MI in May. We are focusing on preparing to go back into the studio to record a full length LP. SportsHegewisch Little Leagues
Continued from front page The Hegewisch Little League parade was a long awaited event in which the children enjoyed a great crowd and large turnout of family and friends. The East Side Little League parade followed the next day, Sunday April 15th. Even with the threat of rain, these hearty little leaguers were pumped up and ready to start the season. They tossed out
candy to the onlookers, flashed smiles and waved to everyone and enjoyed their time to shine. “I enjoyed watching my nephews, Matt Aguilera, his Dad, Frank, Aiden Guerrero and his Dad Ruben, marching in the East Side Little League Parade,” said local resident Rita Alvarez. The East Side Little League is comprised of approximately 400 players ranging from 4 to 18 years of age with about 33 teams. The entire staff is comprised of
non-paid volunteers that give their time and effort for the love of the game and so the children can enjoy life long baseball memories. Each neighborhood league enjoyed great crowds and huge support by the community. Their individual parades were enjoyed by many and if not for the hard efforts of every parent, supporter and staff member no parade or league would be possible.
Seeing the smiling faces of hundreds of children on their way to play their first game of the year made it all worth it. After a long winter, each and every man, woman and child got to hear those two words they waited so long for…”PLAY BALL!” Good luck to all the teams and coaches, spring has officially arrived in our neighborhood.
