Drwęca river

The Drwęca river has its springs near the village of Drwęck, in

Chełmo-Dobrzyń Land in the north of Poland. Drwęca is a right tributary of the Vistula River. It is a typical lowland river

about 207 km long.

It’s one of the most breathtaking rivers.

It flows there in the 8 km-long and 20-30 m-deep picturesque gorge. Next it flows through the

Drwęckie Lake and towards south-west and then through

warmińsko-mazurskie and kujawsko-pomorskie province. On

its way te river passes towns such as Nowe Miasto Lubawskie, Brodnica, Golub-Dobrzyń, finally

Drwęca flows into The Vistula River.

The estuary of the river is situated in

the village of Złotoria.

It has a basin area of 5,344

km².

The name Drwęca is derived from the Praslavonic water names and means run, flow.

The River Drwęca is one of the cleanest Polish rivers and the biggest ichtyological nature

reserve, winds its way through our town.

Charming places and monuments can be found here, Drwęca used to be a

border of Teutonic state that is way we can observe some fortified towns and

frontier castles.

Worth knowing is the fact that, not very long ago, at the beginning

of 70s it was one of the clearest rivers in

Poland and Europe as well. Now, however very slowly, but it is coming back to its earlier magnificent

condition.Drwęca is the only river

having the wildlife reserve on the whole length. There

really is something we need

to protect: clear water, rare kinds of fish,

lampreys, forest lakes, beavers and picturesque

gorges.

The valley of the River Drwęca, together with its tributaries, makes a

sanctuary of nature

Due to considerable level differences the Drwęca

and its tributaries resemble, in fact,

piedmont rivers of high water oxygenation. This is what creates perfect

conditions for some species of fish and

lampreys.

The River Drwęca is the biggest ichthyological reserve in Poland. It was established in 1961 in order to preserve the local water environment

with its fish population, esp. the trout, the salmon, the bulltrout and the vimba.

A few years ago stony

embankments were built along the river

in our town. It is a fine place for resting on hot

summer days.

Surface water intake in Lubicz near Toruń

The river is clean and so it is protected

becasue the city of Toruń scoops water

directly from the river.

In all the cities along the river

sewage treatment

plants were built .

On the Drwęca you can spend a relaxing time

fishing.
