Sunday, March 25, 2018 - Palm Sunday of the Passion of the Lord
A Message from Father Paul
Welcome to Holy Week, 2018! This most solemn week of the Church Year begins with the blessing and distribution of palms at Mass, and the reading of the account of Jesus’ suffering, passion, and death.
Lent officially ends on the afternoon of Holy Thursday. The next few days are referred to as The Sacred Triduum (The Holy Three Days), leading up to Easter Sunday. These are the holiest days of our church year. While they are not Holy Days of Obligation, they are so important to our life as Christians, it is important for us to attend them to celebrate the central mysteries of our faith.
Each morning of the Triduum, (Thursday, Friday, and Saturday of Holy Week) we will begin our day with the praying of Morning Prayer in the Basilica at 9:00 a.m. Please join us for this prayer. It only takes 15 minutes, but it is great way to begin these holiest days of our church year.
On Holy Thursday, we commemorate Jesus’ Last Supper with his disciples and the institution of the Eucharist. The Mass of the day includes the Washing of the Feet (repeating what Jesus did for the apostles at the Last Supper). After the liturgy, the Eucharist is carried in procession to the Altar of Reservation and is kept there in the tabernacle for adoration until the end of the day. This is the evening when some Catholics visit the 7 churches, to pray before the reserved Eucharist in each one. Our Basilica will be open until 10:00 p.m. that night for adoration.
On Good Friday (the only day of the year on which Mass is not celebrated), we will pray the Stations at Noon in the Basilica. At the same time, the Living Stations will be prayed in Holy Cross Cemetery. The Liturgy of the Cross will be celebrated at 3:00 p.m. (the hour of Jesus’ death), with the reading of the Passion of Jesus, the Unveiling and Veneration of the Cross, and Communion, with Eucharist consecrated on Holy Thursday. Stations of the Cross will also be prayed again at 7:00 p.m. On Good Friday, the collection taken up will aid the Shrines of the Holy Land. Our Holy Father Pope Francis has asked us to support these sacred sites in Jerusalem and throughout the Holy Land through this collection each year.
Holy Saturday is the day of the Great Easter Vigil. The Blessing of Food Baskets will take place in the Basilica at 1:00 p.m. The Easter Vigil will begin at 8:00 p.m., with the lighting of the Easter Fire, the readings of the great stories of our faith from the Old Testament, the conferral of the Sacraments of Baptism and Confirmation, the renewal of Baptismal Promises for all of us, and the celebration of Eucharist. It is the only liturgy allowed on that day. (Please Note: there will not be a 4:30 p.m. Mass that day).
May Jesus, our Savior bless you and may Our Lady of Victory watch over you.
Father Paul

Sacrament of Baptism: Our Parish offers a special Pre-Baptism preparation program for parents who desire to share their faith with their children. Parents-to-be must attend this class prior to the birth of their child. Baptisms are usually scheduled two times each month. Call the Rectory to register for classes. Godparents must be Confirmed and practicing Catholics. Non-parishioners are required to have a Letter of Recommendation to serve as a sponsor.
Sacrament of Marriage:
To be married in the Basilica, you must be an active parishioner for at least 9 months prior to setting a date. Engaged couples should contact the pastor before making other wedding arrangements. Couples are required to attend a Pre-Cana Conference, or equivalent pre-marriage preparation program.
Letters of Recommendation:
Recommendations to act as sponsors for Baptism or Confirmation can be issued only to registered members of Our Lady of Victory Parish who have received the Sacrament of Confirmation, attend Mass and receive Holy Communion regularly, have their children attending a Catholic school or Religious Education class. If married, the marriage must be in conformity with the regulations of the Catholic Church.
Devotions:
Exposition of the Blessed Sacrament begins immediately after the 12:10 p.m. Mass in the Basilica on Fridays and concludes with Benediction at 5:00 p.m.
First Friday:
On the eve of the First Friday of each month there are confessions from 3:00 to 4:00 p.m. Mass is celebrated at 7:30 p.m. on First Friday.
Care of the Sick:
Please notify the rectory office for a visit to any family member who is sick, in the hospital or confined to home. Regular home Communion visits are usually on the First Friday of the month by a priest, deacon, or minister of the Eucharist.
Tours:
To schedule a tour of Our Lady of Victory Basilica, please contact Dianne Bosinski, Tours & Basilica Programs by email at dbosinski@ourladyofvictory.org or by phone at (716) 828-9424.
Palm Sunday of the Passion of the Lord
The contrast between the processional reading in today’s liturgy and the proclamation of the Passion is striking. We are given a glimpse of how profoundly the word of God is fulfilled in Jesus.
First he must be hailed as the Messiah, the One who is to come. He must be acknowledged by all, though they do not know what they are saying. They think he is the promised king, a worldly king of the Jews who will free them from the Roman occupation. They do not yet understand, even the disciples, exactly where this triumphal procession is leading. In our lives, we, too, do not know where we are going. It is in faith that we can follow Christ wherever he may lead us, trusting that death is not the end, nor evil the victor. Copyright © J. S. Paluch Co., Inc.

Good Friday Living Stations
Each year, our parish conducts a special version of the Stations of the Cross in Holy Cross Cemetery at noon on Good Friday. These Stations are enacted by children and teens from our Parish and are a very moving form of prayer on that solemn day.
We are asking for children and teens from our parish to volunteer to do those Stations. We need a few readers, but the actors do not have any dialogue to learn. The only practice is held one hour before the Stations at 11:00 a.m. on Good Friday, in the Music Room on the lower level of the Basilica. You do not need experience to help, just a willingness to be a part of something special.
If you or your child is interested in volunteering, please call Tina Hatem at 826-5075 or sign-up in the Marian Room after the 10:00 a.m. Mass on Palm Sunday. Thank you for your help.
Baker Victory Nite 2018
Join us for an evening of old favorites with a new twist at Baker Victory Nite 2018 on Thursday, May 3, at Michaels Catering and Banquets. Each ticket comes with a sit down dinner and open bar. Not only will these funds assist in helping us help those in need, but they will also help provide for repairs and upkeep of the OLV Basilica.
