18TH ANNIVERSARY OF SEPTEMBER 11TH
Powerful God, our refuge and our strength, we turn to you for peace and security as we recall the 9/11 attacks. We thank you for the bravery and the sacrifice of those who saved lives as firefighters, police officers, rescue crews, or people aboard United 93. Comfort and strengthen the family and friends of those who died. Give healing and patience to the survivors of the attacks who are living with continued physical or psycho-logical pain. May those who survived feel gratitude, not guilt. Assure each person whose life changed forever of your protec-tion and strength. Dispel the nightmares; silence the anxiety. May we learn to depend on the security you offer. Guide the choices of our world leaders. Give them wisdom and discernment not only as they work to resolve the lasting effects of the 9/11 attacks but also as they try to allevi-ate terror of all sorts — from genocide to hunger, from drought to bombings. May their actions bring your peace to all the people of the world. Give us our compassion to help each other and recog-nize need around the world. Give us your hope as we face an uncertain future. Give us your peace. Through Jesus Christ, our Lord. Amen. (by Carrie Steenwyk)

TWENTY-THIRD SUNDAY IN ORDINARY TIME Lk 14:25-33 Today’s readings make very clear the demands that will be made of those wanting to be called disciples of Christ. We must be prepared to give our all to Him. But in the end, the life of discipleship — the stewardship way of life — is the only life that can truly satisfy. In the Gospel passage from Luke, Christ says, “If anyone comes to me without hating his father and mother, wife and children, brothers and sisters, and even his own life, he cannot be my disciple.” Our Lord is speaking here not of emotions but rather of priorities. He must come first in all aspects of our lives, period! He goes on, “Whoever does not carry his own cross and come after Me cannot be My disciple.” In other words, it’s all or nothing. Compromise is simply not possible. Christ wants us to give all of ourselves, all aspects of our individual lives, our family life, our parish over to Him and to the pursuit of His kingdom. And just when we think our Lord might soften his message to make it a little more palatable, He goes further! “Anyone of you who does not renounce all his possessions cannot be My disciple.” Why is our Lord being so demand-ing? Only because He knows us so well and loves us so much. He knows that if we do not live by putting Him first before all else, we will easily be swallowed up by the earthly cares that weigh us down — our material things, our status, and our egos. He knows these things cannot satisfy us. He knows this because He is our Maker, and He made us for more. We are made to be His disciples, to seek after Him and His kingdom. Embracing stewardship as a way life al-lows us to count the cost, and then run after Him with all our might. Catholic Stewardship Consultants

TIME, TALENT & TREASURE
This Week’s Stewardship of Time and Talent In gratitude for God’s gifts of time and talent to use, we grate-fully salute our Holy Hour Prayer Leaders.
Stewardship Thought for the Week In today’s Gospel, Jesus helps us to understand what really matters. Put God first in your life and never let any possession come between you and Him.
Parish Sacrificial Giving Collection from last weekend was not available at the time of this printing. It will appear in our next bulletin.
As always, thank you for your generosity to your parish.
YOU CAN MAKE A DIFFERENCE ... Just a reminder, we still have food certificates available for our local super-markets. Food certificates are the same as gift certificates, only they are for the supermarkets. We have them for Key Food, King Kullen, Best Market, Stop & Shop, Cross Island Fruits and CVS. Since you have to eat and feed your family, why not help your parish at the same time? It’s an even exchange. If you give us $100, we give you $100 in food certificates. They actually come in denominations from $5 up to $100. Spend whatever you wish. In turn, the supermarket will give us a 5% rebate. We have approximately 2,500 families in our parish. Can you imagine, if each family in our parish used these cer-tificates on a regular basis to do their food shopping, what the revenue could be? Our parish will receive 5% of the total amount of certificates you use. They don’t cost you anything more than what you would have spent at the store. You can get them at the Rectory, Monday through Friday from 9:30AM to 4:30PM and 6PM to 9PM. On Satur-day from 9:30M to 5:00PM and on Sundays, before or after you go to Mass from 9AM to 1PM. When purchasing them from the Rectory, you must pay by check only. They are also available during school hours at OLP School, which will ac-cept cash or check.
