Oscar G. Brockett Archive / Fine Arts Library Finding Aid
Biographical Note:
Oscar G. Brockett came to University of Texas at Austin in 1978 as the dean of the College of Fine Arts. He went on to teach
for 28 years as part of the Theatre and Dance department from 1980 until his retirement in 2006. During that time, he also headed up
the doctoral program. He expanded the program from five students to thirty and within nine years made it the number one theatre
history program in the nation, according to U.S. News and World Report magazine.
Oscar was born in 1923 and raised in rural Tennessee. He received his bachelor’s degree from Peabody College in Nashville,
TN and a master’s degree and doctorate in theatre from Stanford University. Before coming to UT, he taught at University of Iowa,
University of Indiana, University of Southern California, and Bristol University in the UK.
Oscar married Lenyth Spenker in 1951. The two traveled around Europe with their daughter Francesca L. Brockett during the
late 60s and early 70s. Lenyth, herself a writer and a scholar, collaborated with Oscar on many of his projects.
He wrote numerous books on theatre history. His most notable publication is The History of Theatre, the top-ranked and
highest-selling theatre history text of the 20th century. His other publications include: Century of Innovation: A History of European
and American Theatre and Drama since 1870, The Essential Theatre, Making the Scene: A History of Stage Design and Technology in
Europe and the United States. He also wrote and adapted several plays including Medea and Open Season.
Oscar was active in many national educational theatre organizations. He became a Fellow of the American Theatre in 1971 and
served as the dean from 2002-2004. He served as president of the American Theatre Association and was on the executive board of
the American Society for Theatre Research (ASTR). He was a member of the Association for Theatre in Higher Education (ATHE).
He received numerous awards for excellence in teaching and research in theatre history. He edited Theatre Journal and the Theatre
and Drama Series published by UMI Research Press. He attended theatre conferences worldwide, including chairing the opening
session of the 1988 Eugene O’Neill Conference in Nanjing, China. He is recognized around the globe as the foremost historian of
theatre history.
In 2001, the College of Fine Arts at UT renamed the Winship Drama Building Theatre room and formally dedicated it as the
“Oscar G. Brockett Theatre”. In addition, in recognition of Oscar’s service to the UT community, the Oscar G. Brockett Center for
Theatre History and Criticism was established as a part of the Theatre and Dance department and serves the student body through
initiatives in scholarship, education, and arts in the community.
Oscar died on November 7, 2010, at the age of 87.
