Organic Macromolecules

Organic

• Contains carbon and hydrogen atoms together

• Example:– CH4: methane

– CO2: carbon dioxide

– C6H12O6: sugar

– H2O: water

Macromolecules

• Four important macromolecules that we will study:

1) Carbohydrates2) Lipids3) Proteins4) Nucleic acids

Macromolecules

• Polymer: large unit made up of smaller subunits

• Monomer: subunits• Monomers are linked together to

form polymers• Linkage occurs by dehydration

synthesis OR condensation reactions.

Dehydration Synthesis / Condensation

Dehydration Synthesis

• Joining two monomers by the removal of a water molecule

• ANABOLIC• monomer + monomer polymer +

water

• X – OH + HO – X X -O- X + H2O

Example 2

Hydrolysis

• Opposite of a condensation reaction• Uses a water molecule to break apart

monomers• CATABOLIC• polymer + water monomer +

monomer • X -O- X + H2O X – OH + HO – X
