BREWARRINA & DISTRICT GOLF CLUB NEWS
SUNDAY 30TH JULY
This day saw our ladies travel to Cobar for the annu-
al “Rose Bowl”. Cobar catered for 148 players with 24
Towns/Cities being represented from as far away as
Melbourne and Sydney. Unfortunately our girls found
the course to be a bit tough with only three out of
the ten of them bringing home a trophy, I think with
all the water hazards the girls just couldn’t go past
without taking a dip. Winner were A Grade: Alana
Hardy. And two C Graders: Kim Droguemuller and Wendy
Finlayson. “Congratulations Girls”. The boys played
18 holes at home with Felly being to good again, and
Jason Pellow taking second place. “Well Done”.
Another great day for Felly with a 66 score,
“excellent golf Felly”, Winner (men’s) Felly McHughes
(Ladies) Donna Jeffries (Count Back), Runners Up
(men’s) Ian Parker and (ladies) Noelene English.

Born in Fontainebleau, France, Eric came to Australia
when he was 14 years of age. Eric attended Willunga
high school, in a small country town just outside of
Adelaide in the well-known wine region of the South-
ern Vales. After completing year 12 Eric obtained a
certificate in chef cookery and worked at the local
family restaurant “Les Vignerons”. He went on to
study at the Royal Melbourne Institute of technology
where he obtained a diploma of youth work and a
Bachelor of Arts in Youth Affairs. Eric recalls this as
an interesting period in his life where he worked as a
driving instructor so as to support his studies.
Coming back to Adelaide, Eric spent much of his time building up experience working in the
youth and community development fields, namely with the Henley and Grange and Marion Coun-
cils. In this time Eric has studied part-time towards the accomplishment of an MBA which is due
for completion before the end of this year.
Eric came to Brewarrina with the intention to contribute and benefit the community with his ex-
pertise in the community services field and wanting to make a difference in the lives of those he
will work with and be close to. Eric’s vision is to build a vibrant, healthy and safe Brewarrina
community through the strengthening of individuals as leaders and building of networks for sourc-
ing synergy and resourcing alternative solutions. One of his many goals for Brewarrina is to im-
prove community services, attract new resources and build new facilities.
Eric continues to have an interest working with young people and from time to time will go back
to Adelaide to run a number of leadership and personal development programs for teenagers.
These programs are very popular in Adelaide and attract up to 200 teenagers per program.
Eric enjoys sports and played competitively in the State 4 squash competition in Adelaide. Other
sports include tennis, soccer, swimming and windsurfing. His challenge is to find a dam on a cot-
ton farm big enough so that he can windsurf back and forth. His next challenge is to start up the
tennis club again and build a squash court in Brewarrina. Eric enjoys cooking and he favours
Southern European, Thai and Vietnamese foods.

JACK FARMER
Jack Farmer was the best shot with a Duck Gun that I ever saw. I spent
several years with him shooting ducks and I saw him on several occasions
pull off shots that would make Betsy swoon. We were walking along
swamps or waterways with our guns and the birds were up high flying. I
suppose they thought they were safe. That is until jack poked two number
fours into his barrels, they then where in deadly danger or dead. One time I was working
on a property near Nyngan and I used to share a few beers with Jack in the pub on the
weekends. One day Jack said to me “bloody ducks are quite mate”, “yeah” I replied. “I
wouldn’t mind a feed of wild duck now” he said. I didn’t answer him as myself I couldn’t
stand the taste or texture of wild duck, I would rather have to eat one of Dick-Iniss
Browns shearing boots that had been boiled. The property I was working on was not a
large one and had only two or three earth dams to water the few head of stock that the
miserable cocky ran there. On one such dam there was a smaller dam a few yards from
the main dam better known as a silt dam. There was a Wood Duck Mother and five big
fully grown young ones that lived there. I was fencing at the dam and often saw them
around the dams swimming and feeding. I remarked this to Jack one day and his face
changed quite suddenly from sorrow to elation. “Beauty Mate. I will go out with you. To-
morrow night there will be duck for tea” The next morning I drove out to work with Jack
and his Double Barrel, plus cartridges plus a long thin bolt and pair of pliers “what's the
bolt and pliers for I asked “Jack replied the bolt is for dropping down the barrels to knock
out the empties after I fire and the pliers are to pull one of the hammers on cock because
its half broken off”.
We arrived at the dam and Jack flew out of the ute with gun and gear and started to look
for the “bloody dead ducks”. I sat in the ute and had a smoke while I waited for the dou-
ble boom but Jack came back and panted “I'm buggered if I can find ‘em mate”. I said
they must be here somewhere they always are, lets have a look together. In between the
two dams was a big old hollow that the water flowed into the big dam from the little dam,
as I was walking passed the end of it there they were. “Hey Jack, in here” I pointed up the
log, Jacks face lit up as he jammed two cartridges into his gun. “There dead mate” as he
lay down on the ground with his gun pointed up the log. I cant quite see ‘em he said"
move into the log a bit” I said and he squirmed half his body into the log as I put my
hands over my ears there was this almighty explosion at the other end of the log. Gum
leaves feathers bits of duck flew out in a cloud while at Jacks end he backed out pretty
quick bellowing “ah aaah my Bloody Ears" after I settled him down and convinced him
his head was not blown off, we drove back to town to the Doctors who informed jack
that both his ear drums where busted and two joints in his back were dislocated and that
you never ever fire a gun in an enclosed space !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
As far as I know that gun is still in that log twenty five miles west of
Nyngan

DENTAL HEALTH WEEK 6-12 August 2000
Dental Health Week is the highlight of the dental calendar.
Its aim is to explain to the public exactly what modern dentistry can do and, better still, how sensi-
ble home care can prevent dental problems in the first place.
Dental Health Week is the longest running of all Australia's theme weeks. Its theme this year is
Target Zero. The Australian Dental Association has always sought to reduce tooth decay in the
community - now we are aiming at absolutely zero decay.
To avoid tooth decay and other dental problems the ADA recommends that everyone:
· Brush twice daily with a soft toothbrush and a fluoride toothpaste
· Brush either up and down or in circles
· Include the edges of the gums in the toothbrushing stroke
· Eat healthy food and avoid snacking
· Attend the dentist at least once every six months.
COMMENT SOUGHT ON BARWON-DARLING
ACTION PLAN FOR FLOODPLAIN
MANAGEMENT
The Department of Land and Water Conservation, and the Western Catchment Man-
agement Board, have released a draft action plan for floodplain management studies
in the Barwon-Darling River system from Walgett to Bourke. Information sessions
will be held in Walgett, Brewarrina and Bourke to allow discussions of issues raised
in the plan.
The project area extends along the Barwon-Darling River from Calmindi Weir
(upstream of Walgett) to Warrego River Junction (downstream of Bourke.) The Draft
plan incorporates landholders responses to survey in November 1999 regarding the
nature and impacts of floods in the area.
Mrs Jenny McLellan, Chair of the Project Steering committee, said the project was
being jointly funded through the Natural Heritage Trust and the NSW Governments
Floodplain Management Program, with the aim of promoting greater community in-
volvement in floodplain management.
“The information collected from landholders has greatly assisted in determining pri-
orities for further investigations in the area. The continuing involvement of landhold-
ers is sought through comment on the draft action plan. ”she said.
Mrs McLellan explained “The action plan outlines options for a series of detailed
studies which will lead to the development of strategic floodplain management
plans. These plans aim to support the natural functions of the floodplain, while re-
ducing the impacts of flooding on landholders”
Interested members of the community are invited to drop in at the information ses-
sions any time between 1pm and 8 pm at:
Walgett Tuesday 15 August Wolseley House, Fox Street
Brewarrina Wednesday 16 August Community Senior Citizens Centre
Bourke Thursday 17 August Council Chambers, 29 Mitchell Street

I Wish I didn’t Swear Week 6-12 August 2000
Have you ever said “I wish I didn’t swear”? Now is a real opportunity to do something worthwhile about it
and have fun at the same time. Each time you swear, drop a gold coin into a swear box and help grant the
wishes of kids with a life threatening illness. This year the Make-A-Wish Foundation of Australia aims to
raise over $500,000 through its first “I Wish I didn’t Swear Week”.
The philosophy of the Make-A-Wish Foundation is to give children (under 18 years of age) with a life
threatening illness a very special event to take them out of a difficult and painful existence - if only for a
very short time. At the same time, the Foundation endeavours to provide precious memories for the child's
family and loved ones, as memories are all that some families may have.
The Make-A-Wish Foundation originated in the United States in 1980. It grew from the wishes of a young
boy, Chris Grecius, who had leukaemia. Chris dreamed of one day becoming a patrolman. When US pa-
trolman, Tommy Austin heard about Chris and his wish he brought his colleagues together to make the
boy's dream come true. Chris was inducted into the police force. He was given his own custom-made uni-
form, helmet and badge. He rode in the patrol car and took a helicopter flight.
That one child's special delight in having his dream come true provided the inspiration for the Make-A-
Wish Foundation. Young Chris Grecius died shortly after receiving his wish.
In Australia, the Foundation was launched in 1985 after two insurance agents attended a conference in the
USA where they learnt about the work of Make-A-Wish Foundation.
Since then the Make-A-Wish Foundation has established 40 branches across Australia.
The Make-A-Wish Foundation relies solely upon the generosity of the community, businesses and its vol-
unteers to fund the wishes. The Foundation does not receive any government funding and fundraising is a
priority management activity.
If you haven’t had the chance to get involved in the inaugural “I Wish I didn’t Swear Week”, and would
like to make a donation, please send your cheque to:
