OPO 4255 OPHTHALMIC ARTERY ANEURYSMS: AN INVESTIGATION BY DUPLEX MAPPING
LA.46 Moh&, Jo& G. M. P. Caldas, Vital P. Costa, Giovanni Cerri Heart Institute of the University of Stio Paul0 Medical School, Brazil.
Objecfives: To analyze the peak systolic velocity (PSV) in ophthalmic arteries with aneurysm. Metlrods: Color flow duplex mapping (CFDM) was performed in 28 carotid-ophthalmic artery segments without ipsilateral carotid stenosis. The angiographic study of the extracranial and intracranial carotid system was utilized as the “gold standard”. Results: A subgroup of eight ophthalmic arteries with aneurysms from seven individuals were identified with PSVs significantly reduced mean PSVs compared with the mean PSVs in the normal group (p==O.O06). A PSV of less than 19 cm/s offered a sensitivity of 80% and a specificity of 100% in diagnosing ophthalmic artery aneurysms. ConcZ~s~o~s: CFDM is useful in the identification of patients with ophthalmic artery aneurysms and without severe ipsilateral carotid stenosis.

Keratoprosthesis (KPro) consists of a central optical system (7 mm diameter, 0.5 mm thick) fixed to an opaque biocompatible microporous polymer which serves as a support. When implanted in the damaged cornea, the supporting polymer is progressively penetrated or colonized by the comeal cells which synthetize a connective tissue that permits the integration of the material in the host cornea. Although clinical results in human patients are encouraging, complications still occur (necrosis of the host cornea and subsequent extrusion of the implant) resulting in KPro failure. This is in part due to the fact that there are no non destructive techniques to assess the polymer colonization and biointegration over time in situ. In the current study, a non invasive 3D scanning ultrasound microscope (60 MHz effective operating frequency, 30 microns axial resolution) was developed by the authors and used to control and characterize in vitro (using echographic signal spectral analysis) the progressive biocolonization of the Dolvmer implanted in-rabbit cornea. Echographic findings were correlated to histologic data. Our results show that 3D high frequency echography coupled with quantitative characterization has strong potential to contribute to the evaluation and development of KFYo technique.
OPO 4502 UBM AND ACUTE GLAUCOMA

Hospital Santa Lucia, Buenos Aires.(Arg)
Objectives: To compare anatomic parame-
ters between the affected and the second
eye of patients with acute closed angle
glaucoma, to determine the angle
configurations and the presence of risk
factors in the fellow eyes. Materials
and methods: We bilaterally performed
UBM on 18 consecutive patients with
acute PCAG, took the measurements
already described by Pavlin et al. and
made statistical comparisons and
analyzed the images of the fellow eyes.
Results: All the parameters failed to
show statistically significative
differences between affected an fellow
eyes. we found plateau iris configura-
tion in four (22.2%) of the cases and
both eyes of one patient had multiple
iris cysts which caused angle narrowing. Conclusions: The anatomic features of
the anterior segments showed remarkable
symmetry, plateau iris configuration
appears to be more frequent than expect-
ed and multiple iris cysts may be
considered as an additional, though
rare, risk factor.
OPO 4751 -COLOR DOPPLER IMAGING(CDI)INSHOROIDEAL MELANOMA:PREiZMINARY STUDY Mauro Caputo, Lucia CaIcuIIi, +Nicola Caramazza, Elena Fadda, Pa& d’Arienzo, Franc0 Sbruzzi, Albert0 Ferrati. Institute of Radiology - II Chair ; *Ophthalmology Clinic - II Chair S.Orsola Hospital, Bologna. Italy.
Aim. This study investigate the relationship between the grading of -. choroideal melanoma and the rel&d intra- and pexiksional va4cularization. Methods and materials: 10 patients with choroideal melanoma underwent bulbar CD1 examination to evaluate the lesion vasculariazation degree. 2 patients submitted to conservtiive therapy (radiotherapy) had CD1 evaluation also in the follow-up: &a: CD1 evaluation of peri- and in!raIesional vascdarization was possible in ail cases. The relationship between the neoplastic grnding and vaseahrization had certain significance in most of cases Furthermore this tecnique allowed us to follow-up the radiotherapy resukr a progressive decrease of tumornl vascularization was cleadly evident in both radiotherapy treated patients. Conclusions: CD1 seems to he an effedive and riproducible tecnique -.- to monitorize ocular tumors. and perhaps, it will be able in time, to allow a real characterization.
