Transcript of Open Letter to the Film Industry

Dear Film Industry

before we start with the presentation

WARNINGThe following presentation has been published by myself, but that does not mean that every thinkable right concerning anything in that presentation has been handed over to anyone. For example, recording anything i say during a presentation of this deck or capturing any image of the slides while I am showing them might or might not be under any copyright protection. I simply do not know. I just wanted to show that it may feel strange for someone who expects content, or actually even has paid for content, to be told – first thing – what he cannot or should not do with it. If you want to build fruitful relations to end consumers, it may be a better choice to treat them not as potential criminals first; and if so, explain to them why that is. A simple „thank you for purchasing“ before showing that warning may be nice. However, to make a text like this more scary, some figures along with currency signs should be shown. For example, I could come to your company and present this deck for

250,000 US$With some negotiation, i might even settle for less. You may give it a try.

I hope you took 20 seconds or so

to look at that screen.

I could have even put in some more language

versions of it.

But that could have been boring.Let‘s get to the presentation.

In a moment.

Do not miss more great stuff that I published

„great and inspiring stuff“

„thank you for sharing“

„i will use that in my own company“

Right out of Berlin, Germany…

Didn‘t it?

Annoying?

We‘re nearly there.

One more question.

WOULD YOU STEAL A HANDBAG?

You invested time to watch the presentation

so far.

I gave you nothing.

Feels bad?

Customers invest time and money to get a DVD or

BlueRay.

Each time they use it, you make them go

through an experience like this.

So let‘s get to the point.

and i just like that brand.

Are you still there?

Any value from a bunch of logos before

the action starts?

Now i would like to play some annoying music in a menu and reveal

that the promised „special features“ are

some more commercials.

But that wouldn‘t be fair.

In the end, we love great movies.

So here are a few tips for the future.

You will probably not put an end to piracy and increase your margins by 20%.

But wouldn‘t it be nice if people bought your

stuff because

of the way you present it and not in spite of it?

DO

• Treat customers like someone you value• Appreciate that they buy your products

Thank you,come again!

DON‘T

• Annoy customers with behaviour layed out in the first 35 slides of this deck• From one of Germany‘s leading blogs:

http://www.spreeblick.com/wp-content/uploads/2010/02/movies_deutsch1.png

a pirate gets this

and a paying customer this

DO

• Build direct customer relations – they might be useful in a future with non-physical movie distribution

• And these are also the „non-pirates“, by the way

„Arrrr, You must be a pirate, then!“

DON‘T

• Tell people not to steal. No one else does. Because people know it already.

don‘t stealour shit

How would that feel?

DO

• Work on a standard that makes it possible to use paid content on different devices

http://www.decellc.com

DON‘T

• Dictate where to store content and which device to use

DO

• Publish for the niche• Your future is in long tail, too

The Tonight Show‘s self-pleasuring bear behind the scenes outtakes

DON‘T

• Artificially deplete access to your stuff with „region codes“ in a world that does not know borders anymore

• We don‘t want to block friends in Facebook because they already talk about 24 Season 8 a year before we see it

DO

• Use packaging as a marketing tool just like any other FMCG industry does

DON‘T

• Overdo it.

DO

• Appreciate user involvement and free promotion when really creating something new out of original, copyrighted material.

DON‘T

• Hunt down everyone who uploads a trailer. Samples might actually be good for sales.
