OwnershipRolleston Open Cut is managed by Glencore on behalf of a joint venture between Glencore Coal Qld (75%), Sumisho Coal Australia and ICRA Rolleston (both 12.5%).

Our HistoryXstrata acquired Mount Isa Mines (MIM) and the Rolleston Coal Project was put on hold for 12 months while evaluation of the project was undertaken. Mining operations begin.

Full scale development of the Rolleston Coal Project approved with construction beginning shortly thereafter.

Xstrata plc (the majority participant in the Rolleston Coal Joint Venture and operator of the mine), merged with Glencore plc.The new entity, Glencore, is one of the world’s largest diversified natural resource companies. As a result of this merger, Xstrata Coal Queensland Pty Ltd has now changed its name to Glencore Coal Queensland Pty Ltd.

Rolleston Open Cut is located in the southern part of Queensland’s Bowen Basin, 16 kilometres west of the town of Rolleston and 120 kilometres south east of Emerald.

Current operations at the Rolleston Open Cut involve the use of two draglines supported by two electric rope shovels, one hydraulic shovel, two hydraulic excavators, 32 rear dump trucks and 14 dozers. The support fleet principally moves mine waste material and coal. All machinery operates on a seven day roster.

Rolleston Open Cut has supported many local events, activities and projects. This includes the Rolleston Health Clinic, a first-ever medical facility for the local community, and Zamia Parklands Project in Springsure.
