Oil spills can happen in different ways, some are the result of mistakes made by crew members; others may be caused by leaks in pipelines and fuel tanks.

What’s going on?

Did You Know?

the 15 largest oil spills since 1967 have released over 14 million barrels of oil into the seas and onto the land

After Exxon Valdenz spill 109 bald eagles were found dead eating oil carcasses

1,144 sea

turtles

were found

on the

beach by w

ildlife

officials,

Importance… If the oil spills keep happening all of the animals in the sea will be hurt along with the water

This is a pelican getting washed at the Fort Jackson , LA Center for birds.

One of the most common tools for fighting oil spills is a boom. It is a kind of floating fence. It can be placed around an oil spill to keep from spreading.

Picture of a

boom!

MORE THAN 223,000 TONS OR 50,000,000 GALLONS OF OIL SPILLED FROM AMOCO CADIZ…

THAT’S ENOUGH OIL TO FILL MORE THAN 560 AVERAGE TWO STORY HOMES!

Exxon Valdez spill killed nearly half of the 15,000 otters in the area, rescuers could only save 200

If we work together…

WE CAN MAKE A

DIFFRENCE!

Look for new ways to

save oil like turning off

lights not being used,

use solar power, and

cut down on

unnecessary car trips
