Oil spills can happen in different ways, some are the result of mistakes made by crew members; others may be caused by leaks in pipelines and fuel tanks.

One of the most common tools for fighting oil spills is a boom. It is a kind of floating fence. It can be placed around an oil spill to keep from spreading.
