TENTATIVE 2018 SCHEDULE
Below is the first-cut of the 2018 schedule. Some of the dates later in the year are
tentative as noted by an asterisk (*). But for planning purposes, Scott Klingler
and Dick Charest thought it would be a good idea to publish what we know.
(Editor’s Note: I’ve included 2017 venues with this year’s dates, but they have
not been confirmed as of the date this issue went to print.)
EDITOR’S COMMENTS BY ROLF HILL Another fabulous season. The weather was perfect at many
venues and the demonstrations were fun to watch (and be in), the
people were great, too. Plenty of “bench racing” that exemplified
my bumper sticker: “The Older I Get, The Faster I Was!”
What a surprise it was to see Pearl Gamble and Bob Hartman
wandering the pits at Camden. I talked to them briefly. Just like
the old days.
Big issue of VKA FIRSTURN© … 2018 Schedule … FOUR event summaries-
Camden, Oreville, Delmar and Cuddebackville .... Gotta keep it short. (Mark that

JULY BOARD MEETING SUMMARY BY BILL BLOODWORTH SYNOPSIS: There are 358 total members, 319 full members
and 39 associate members. The ending June balance is
$19,874.06 which reflects revenue of $1,327.04 and expenses
of $928.77. The successful Brodhead event was discussed.
Scott Klingler is assuming the Delmar event promoter duties
from Jim Thompson who is withdrawing. Scott is also working
to have the Quincy event back on the VKA schedule in 2018. Issues which were
raised at the New Castle event regarding Yamaha Limited class pipe length were
discussed. Lynn Haddock will provide sketches for posting on the VKA website.
A proposal is being developed which will address a one-inch axle class for
Yamaha karts. Preparations for future shows are on schedule. There has been a
lot of chatter regarding the upcoming Avon event. A $25 one-day pass will be
available at the Oreville event. The VKA Magazine August issue will be a single
issue and will not be combined with any other month. Concerns regarding
potential safety issues which occurred at the recent New Castle event were
discussed. It was reported that in the past this type of issue was addressed by
promoter group action. The preference was for the same avenue to be pursued for
this case.
AUG. BOARD MEETING SUMMARY BY BILL BLOODWORTH SYNOPSIS: There are 358 total members, 319 full members and 39 associate members.
The ending July balance is $20,021.73 which reflects revenue of $1,337.00 and expenses
of $1,189.33. End of year board retirements were announced including the President and
Vice-President positions. Scott Klingler plans to use the new AMA motocross scoring
system, a tighter system, at the Delmar event. Whether or not a restart is performed should
there be an incident on the start is at the discretion of the promoter according to Bill
McCornack. Tire guidelines will be updated to reflect current names. This Fall there will
be discussion regarding 1960’s era rear engine karts with foreign engines which are
historically legal. Lynn Haddock continues to work on a future guidelines proposal
involving Yamaha class karts with one-inch axles. Creation of the ability to sell VKA t-
shirts from the VKA website and from eBay was discussed. Items addressed included
having a link from the Facebook page to the website and payment method. Based on what
he observed at the Avon event, Gary Wlodarsky plans to submit show guideline revisions
to the Board at a later date. The revisions will include addition of a historic pre-1962 group.
Barry Greenzweig plans to allow one- piece wheels at the Oreville event. Availability of
info about Duffy Livingstone for inclusion in the September magazine was discussed
including the potential article being written by Frank Weir for European publication. Guest
Sal Palatucci commented about how motel and nearby restaurant personnel were unaware
of the Avon event. While there are existing promotional suggestions in the promoter’s
package furnished by VKA, Rolf Hill will look at possible revisions.

CAMDEN SUMMARY BY JEFF & SHERRI BROWN
We had 68 entries, great weather (70's and sunny). Excellent competition
and four juniors who put on a great show. The Bennett brothers put on
heck of a race between themselves in all three Heats in dual
sidewinder. Gary Wlodarsky cooked an excellent fish dinner and teamed
up with Jim (Max-Torque) Donovan. After the events at the track, some
evening activities were organized at a local watering hole.
OVKA club and the track owner Gary Gregg did a fine job preparing and
running the facility.
Overall the comments I received were positive. This is an excellent track
for all types of kart and engine combinations. If you haven't been there,
try to make it next year.
Thanks to all who came and participated. Jeff & Sherri Brown

CAMDEN SHOW BY GARY WLODARSKY
[Editor’s Note: Gary was cooking fish, so he asked me to organize the show.
With the help of Scott Klingler and Don Renton, we gotter dun. Unfortunately,
despite the big turnout for the event, only 17 karts entered the show, but there
were some spectacular entries. All the karts were grouped by their category, and
in my humble opinion, seeing all the Past Champions grouped together in the
infield made for a spectacular display of the work vintage karters have put into
their treasures. They will soon be joined by some of the other “newcomers.”
Congratulations to all.]

VINTAGE KARTING HALL OF FAME BY JEFF BROWN
The Vintage Karting Hall of Fame was started in 2009 by Jeff
Brown. Gus Traeder was the first inductee. Gus was instrumental
in helping vintage karting get started by holding the 1st vintage event
at TNT Raceway in Quincy … a track steeped in karting history.
Each year since then, a few selected karters are inducted to the
Vintage Karting Hall of Fame. The official plaque, pictured below,
is located at the New Castle Motorsports Park in Indiana.

OREVILLE SUMMARY BY KARL GINTER
urricane Irma was a nasty old hag that dealt devastation and
heavy rains across much of the southeast, but her clouds,
wind, and rain were largely dissipated, and replaced with
great weather by the time Oreville, Pennsylvania’s East
Coast Nationals opened its gates to legions of vintage karting
enthusiasts on 15-16 September. The Oreville Kart Club’s WKA Master Track
facility played perfect host to the VKA’s third-leg of the Northeast Promoter’s Cup Series.
The event netted 51 entries in Tier I and Tier II demonstrations, and a first-rate
Kart Show that boasted over 50 of the finest and rarest rear-engine and sidewinder
chassis in the country. Special thanks to Gary Wlodarsky (Ohio), and Rolf Hill
(Maryland) in assisting with the Kart Show venue, including attendees from
Virginia, Maryland, New York, New Jersey, Connecticut, all the VKA Northeast
members...and everyone who participated for making this a top-flight event!
Lots of vending, practice, and exhibition time characterized all-day Friday.
Saturday kicked-off with a wonderful Kart Show, followed by two practice
sessions, and then the scored Heats for each of the six scored/flagged classes in
the Promoter’s Cup Series. The evening was punctuated by a wonderful
picnic-style dinner and multiple 50/50 prize giveaways. We extend our special
thanks to VKA event promoter Barry Greenzweig for another incident-free,
safety-conscious VKA event, as well as the Oreville Kart Club event staff and
volunteers for hosting this awesome event, and look forward to the fourth and
culminating leg of the Northeast Promoter’s Cup Series at Cuddebackville,
NY on 6-7 October – we’ll see you there! Karl Ginter

DELMAR SUMMARY BY SCOTT KLINGLER
(EDITOR’S NOTE: VKA is run by volunteers, and some of the
volunteers have “day jobs.” Scott was “on the road” much of the
time between this event and the publishing deadline. Part of his
“free-time” was working on the 2018 schedule, so he didn’t have
time to provide a summary. From what I’ve gathered, it was a good
event with lots of good times and good food. Between Jim
Donovan, Jessie James, Todd Hanold, Jim & Kay Merritt, Sonny
Gerber and several others, no one went hungry. I hear the weather
and the racing were pretty good, too. The Welte’s have posted
many of the pix and videos of the event on-line.)

CUDDEBACKVILLE SUMMARY BY KARL GINTER
Unseasonably warm, Fall weather prevailed across the Poconos and nearby
Cuddebackville, New York, home to the Oakland Valley Kart Club (OVRP) and
host to the legions of vintage karting enthusiasts attending the VKA Northeast
Fall Nationals – the fourth and culminating event of the Northeast Promoter’s Cup
Series. The event netted 64 kart demonstration entries, and 36 entries in the VKA Kart Show that boasted some of the finest and rarest, historic rear-engine
chassis in the country.
Special thanks to both Rick Keller and Al Postiglione for both promoting this
event and overseeing the Promoter’s Cup Series throughout the 2017 VKA
calendar year, and a special thanks to all VKA Northeast members...and
everyone who participated for making this a top-flight event!
Lots of track time characterized the first day, followed by a fabulous kart
show, delicious evening buffet-style dinner and a flagged series of simulated
Heats under the lights – a real treat for everyone who participated! Saturday
began with a standard practice session, followed by a second practice session
where the participants were timed to determine starting position in the first Heat.
Three Heats were run without incident in each of the eight flagged events. The
day was capped-off with a 50/50 prize give-away, event award presentations, and awards for the top three finishers of the very successful 2017
Northeast Promoter’s Cup Series. Karl Ginter

CLUTCH WRENCHS BY JIM DONOVAN
There are at least three ways to hold a crank on a McCulloch if you want to
tighten a starter cup nut or install or remove a clutch.
1. The factory built-in a little
hole on the back side of the
flywheel cover (fig. 1).
You can stick a small,
AMERICAN-MADE* Allen
Wrench in the hole and try
to find the notch on the
back of the flywheel. Over
time, this can ruin the
flywheel cover or the notch
on the flywheel.
2. Many vintage karts have
invested in a flywheel
wrench. (fig. 2). It fits over
the flywheel fins and
allows easy access to both
the flywheel nut and the
PTO side of the crank.
3. The third option is a
simple, inexpensive tool
you can make yourself. For the
“inboard” type Max-Torque clutch, a
12” piece of ½” square tubing works
nicely. First, drill a ¼” hole at least ⅜”
from the end of the tubing. Insert a 1”
by ¼”- 20 cap screw (i.e., Allen bolt)
and tighten with ¼” – 20 nut, as shown
in fig. 3. Drill a second hole 1.175”
from the center of the first. (Double
check this measurement against the
holes on the clutch drive plate.) [The
idea is for the heads of the two bolts to
fit in two adjacent holes on the clutch
drive plate (see fig.4).] * “American Made” because cheap Allen wrenches might
break.
fig.1
fig.2
fig.3
VKA FIRSTURN© -17- Oct/Nov 2017 MMXVII No.7
The head of the Allen bolt is a perfect size to go
into the holes on the clutch drive plate without
hitting the springs and it will work on both types
of drive plates (inboard or outboard). It will
also work on the drive plate with elongated
holes.
For an outboard clutch, use a thin (at least 1/8”)
piece of metal. Drill the two, 0.201” holes (#7
bit) the same distance apart. You won’t need
¼” nuts, because once you screw-in the bolts,
you will have to grind-off the ends so they fit between the clutch drive
plate and the PTO side of the engine.
Good luck and safe karting.
Oh, if you are at Bushnell, I plan on making three as examples, so you see what
they look like. If you purchase a 2018 Vintage Karting Wall Calendar, I might
give you one of the examples.
