Göttingen Channels 2017"Of Benches and Beds"

Herzforschungszentrum, Robert-Koch-Str. 42a, 37075 Göttingen, Germany

WELCOME

Dear Colleagues and Friends,

I am delighted to welcome you to the second “Channels symposium” of the German Cardiac Society Working Group on Cellular Electrophysiology (WG18).

After the great success of the first “Channels symposium” organized by Dierk Thomas in Heidelberg two years ago, we decided to establish this meeting as an integral part of our working group’s activities.

“Of Benches and Beds”, this year’s title, highlights the mission of our working group: to operate at the interface between basic science and clinical application. The selection of speakers and session topics reflect this translational aspect. The symposium’s small size, with a maximum of 60 attendees, and its focused topics provide the ideal platform for productive interplay among scientists in a familiar atmosphere.

To support the contribution of young scientists, we have invited outstanding MD and PhD students, in collaboration with the Scientists of Tomorrow (SoT) of the European Society of Cardiology, to present at the meeting. Along with an enhanced interaction between senior scientists, we want to give young researchers the opportunity to take part in sti-mulating discussions and debates.

It is a special honour to welcome Prof. Dr. W. J. Lederer as the keynote speaker. He is the director of the Center for Biomedical Engineering and Technology and Professor of Physiology at the University of Maryland in Baltimore, USA. Prof. Lederer made funda-mental discoveries in the physiology of cytosolic Ca2+ handling that changed our view of biology and medicine. He will provide an overview about newly-investigated aspects of mitochondrial Ca2+ homeostasis in the heart and this will serve as an introduction for one of the major topics of the meeting. Mitochondria and their impact on cellular electrophy-siology and arrhythmogenesis will be an important theme in the majority of our sessions.

Göttingen Channels 2017 will be held in the new cardiac research building of the Univer-sity Medical Center Göttingen (Herzforschungszentrum), especially designed for cutting edge cellular and subcellular cardiac research. It accommodates the most novel electro-physiological and microscopy technologies including super-resolution microscopy (STED). The cardiac research building, a unique platform for the interaction of internal and exter-nal research groups, provides the ideal environment for Göttingen Channels 2017.

I wish all of you a very stimulating and exciting stay here in Göttingen.

Yours,

Niels VoigtInstitute of Pharmacology and Toxicology,University Medical Center Göttingen, Germany
