13

What else?

15

Step 1

Browse the Archives’ database!

Do it!

Step 2

Pick a few recordings so you have a few choices. Come talk to us or e-mail if you have having trouble.

But, it helps us if you can at least identify an artist or artist(s). Give us something to work with!

archives@etsu.edu

Step 3

Make sure the song is commercially available.

DON’T START WRITING WITHOUT A MATCH! Just...don’t. Google will tell you. Google is friendly that way.

Hint: You don’t need to pick your commercial recording from the Archives.

Step 5

Talk to the librarians about other potential resources. The Archives may have some information about performers and the recordings themselves, but you may want to dig further.

Step 4

Listen to the recording in the Archives. You’re going to have to. We’re not bootleggers.

Pro tip: e-mail ahead and we’ll have it ready.

Once here, take detailed notes so you can write with your cup of coffee at 11 p.m. in the comfort of your home.

Laura’s 5 Steps for Success (well, for this assignment)

“ The Archives is a tear-free, no panic zone.

16

And early…

17

And we stay that way by researching smart...

And starting with the Archives...

And asking for help when needed...

Critical listening & thinking

◂ Who is singing? ◂ Why are they singing? ◂ What is different about

the performances? ◂ Instruments? Lyrics?

Genre? Something else? You decide!
