Cruising Guide 2011-12www.traveltrade.co.nz 6
Intro
More than 42,000 Kiwis went
on a cruise in 2010 - a 36 per
cent increase on the year
before - but this kind of growth will not
last forever.
International Cruise Council of
Australasia (ICCA) general manager
Brett Jardine admitted that, like any
product cycle, it was impossible to
sustain such huge growth and business
would plateau eventually.
In order to maximize sales now and
encourage repeat business for later,
he urged agents to become accredited
cruise consultants.
Approximately one in three New
Zealand travel store are now members
of the programme, with 227 accredited
cruise consultants and 23 master cruise
consultants in the country.
“[ICCA] accreditation is issued on behalf
of the cruise lines and it gives clients
reassurance and helps agents stand out
[from the crowd],” said Jardine.
He said agents who underwent the
training were given the ammunition to
sell with confidence, put cruising into the
conversation and qualify clients correctly.
“If you get them on the right ship
the first time they will become repeat
passengers.
The primary objection from people
who have not cruised before is they will
be bored, cooped up and claustrophobic.
An experienced consultant can argue
that there are cruising, which are more
about what is happening off the ship, port
intensive and expedition style.”
Growth industryCruising has fared bumpy waters
as capacity issues, natural disasters
and economic woes made for stormy
conditions. The beacon of hope was a
strong Kiwi dollar.
“People have looked at how they are
spending in the tough financial conditions
and cruising offers good value… 2011
passenger numbers will not be released
until 2012 but anecdotally the are looking
good,” said Jardine.
He said cruise lines have supplied
capacity to meet ongoing demand and
there would be a significant increase
over the next two seasons. In fact, a
record number of ships are expected in
Auckland this coming season, with 97 on
the schedule, up from last year’s record
high of 79. At the height of the summer
season, in January and February 2012,
22 ships are expected each month.
Ports of Auckland have announced that
cruise bookings for the 2012/13 season
have cracked the century mark, with 101
ship calls booked already.
“In the 2011 season, the cruise
industry is forecast to generate $177m
of direct expenditure in Auckland. This
cash injection into the local economy will
generate an additional $71m of value
add and 1044 jobs,” said Ports general
manager Wayne Mills.
It is not just Auckland benefitting
from the boom, Tourism New Zealand
has come on board with ICCA to promote
everything the country has to offer.
“Cruising offers a taste of a destination
and travellers will go back and stay
longer next time. Tourism New Zealand
understand this and has come on board
to build an understanding of New Zealand
This is no denying that cruising is the biggest growth industry in New Zealand travel and agents are being urged to specialise while the going is good, writes Rebecca Williams.

as a destination,” said Jardine.
Where are Kiwis headed?ICCA statistics reveal that 54 per cent
of passengers cruised in local waters last
year, with 42 per cent (18,153 passengers)
opting for a South Pacific holiday, nine per
cent (3862) sailing in Australian waters
and three per cent in New Zealand.
Further afield, Europe was the biggest
draw card attracting 20 per cent of
New Zealand passengers (8390) while
Alaska appealed to five per cent (2281).
Six per cent of passengers (2372) chose
a river cruise.
While overall numbers grew in 2010,
the biggest growth in passenger numbers
came in the South Pacific (49.4 per cent
increase) and Europe (49.8 per cent).
In other trends, the statistics show a
rise in the popularity of shorter cruises
with voyages of seven days or less
accounting for 25 per cent of passenger
numbers, up from 13 per cent in 2009.
Meanwhile, cruises of 15 days or more
decreased to around 15 per cent in 2010,
down from 26 per cent in 2009.
A word from the wiseHeather Bint from Mondo Travel Orewa
(ICCA Cruise Consultant of the Year –
NZ finalist) said Mediterranean cruises
continued to sell well in the Kiwi market.
“It is a good way to have a taste of a
number of European countries without
the hassles that independent travel
can sometimes bring such as driving
difficulties, limited parking and locating
hotels. Plus you only have to unpack once
- as we all regularly tell clients.”
She said clients also find Med cruising
cost effective and stress free.
“It is a bit like an escorted tour as
everything is done for you, yet you can
have your independence on shore if
you’re not keen on taking advantage of
the shore excursions offered.”
A passion for cruising has certainly
helped Bint specialise and annual
consultant training days have enabled her
to build relationships with the suppliers,
which “makes a huge difference”.
“If I’m quoting a destination that has a
cruise option, I’ll always suggest it to my
clients. Here at Mondo Travel Orewa we
escort a number of tours each year and
always include cruising as an add on.”
She recommended the ICCA training as
a way to gain confidence in selling cruise
itineraries.
“It gives you knowledge of the
different cruise lines and their ports of
call. I’m looking forward to completing
my masters next year and hopefully
attending Cruise 360 the following year.
My favourite way to gain knowledge of
cruising is to cruise myself.”
Bint has cruised “only” six times with
the most recent being a Holland America
Alaskan cruise in September.
“I did a magnificent shore excursion in
a float plane over glaciers to Taku Glacier
Lodge where we ate BBQ salmon and saw
black bears; just fantastic. My favourite
cruise so far has been my Luftner River
Cruise, which I escorted a group on. We
cruised from Amsterdam to Budapest
and had sunshine every day, magnificent
food, wonderful shore excursions and
always had something to look at whether
it was all the locks we went through or the
beautiful countryside dotted with castles.”
It will come as no surprise that she
already has another adventure in the
works.
“I’ve already planned my next cruise,
which is on the Allure of the Seas in May
next year. I also have my eye on Celebrity
Silhouette, which I’ve heard is amazing.”

Aranui Cruises offer soft
adventure with 16 ports of
call from Tahiti including the
Marquesas Islands and Tuamotu atolls
onboard the cargo passenger Aranui 3.
The all-inclusive cruise package
includes a 13-night/14-day voyage with
three meals per day, all shore excursions
accompanied by experienced tour guides,
visits to remote villages, hiking, picnics,
restaurants, barbecues on the beach,
sight-seeing tours by four wheel drive and
on-site archaeological lectures.
Aranui 3 can accommodate up to 200
passengers per cruise with its 86 outside
cabins ranging from suites with balcony,
deluxe, standard A cabins and a multiple
share dormitory with a total of 18
individual berths.
The ship provides the only real contact
the Marquesas Islands get, supplying
essentials such as food, mail and other
equipment to the remote island.
Agents can get a taste of the ship first-
hand when she is scheduled to arrive in
New Zealand January 2012.
“Aranui 3 will be at the Devonport
Naval base for dry docking, mainly for
general maintenance, hull repainting,
engine overhaul, carpet replacing for the
suites and deluxe cabins,” said Aranui
regional representative Laurent Wong.
“Every three years, we choose
Devonport Naval Base because it is one
of the nearest facility to Tahiti, also
our dry dock in Papeete is too small to
accommodate Aranui 3.”
Tahiti Tourisme will organise a
small and very limited group of travel
wholesalers and agents for a one-hour on
board visit on the last day of dry-docking,
which will coincide with the Auckland
departure day.
In other news, an increase of local and
overseas tourists are expected in the
Marquesas this December, as the mini
Festival of the Arts (December 15-18) will
be hosted in the island of Nuku Hiva.
“I believe New Zealand is also taking
part in the festival and Air Tahiti will
be increasing the domestic flights from
Papeete to the Marquesas. The Aranui
voyage departing December 9 is now fully
booked out due to the celebration.”

MSC are offering a new perspective on
United Arab Emirates from their new
homeport in Abu Dhabi.
The Italian cruise line has deployed
MSC Lirica to Abu Dhabi steering cruise
tourism to a region that prides itself on
rich history, soft sandy beaches, desert
safaris, giant mosques, and modern
additions to the skylines.
The 59,000-tonne MSC Lirica has a
capacity for almost 2200 guests in 784
cabins and suites, and will offer 19 eight-
day/seven-night cruises with prices
starting at $1069 per person twin share.
Ports of call include Al Fujairah in the
United Arab Emirates, Dubai, Khasab and
Muscat, both in Oman, with an exciting
range of shore excursions. Among the
options in Dubai are a sunset dhow
cruise with shopping tour and a dune
drive safari. While in Abu Dhabi, guests
can come face to face with falcons on an
afternoon tour.
“MSC Cruises moved quickly to build
on Abu Dhabi’s emerging popularity
by establishing the centre as an
embarkation hub and we are excited
with the prospects,” said MSC managing
director Lynne Clarke.

Norwegian Cruise Line has invested millions to enhance both
Norwegian Spirit and Norwegian Jade.
The 2,018-passenger Norwegian Spirit now has Wi-Fi
throughout, new carpet and flat screen TVs. The Stardust
Theatre and Raffles Court (the ship’s buffet restaurant) have
also been overhauled.
Norwegian Jade enters dry dock for refurbishment on
November 26 until December 8. During this time, the 2,402
passenger ship will receive signature Brazilian steakhouse,
Moderno Churrascia, replacing Paniolo’s Tapas and Salsa
restaurant on Deck 8. The ship will also receive technical
enhancements including new propeller and thrust bearings;
seals on the Azipod propulsion systems; as well as a new coat of
hull paint. Norwegian Jade sails year-round from Europe.
Both Norwegian Dawn and Norwegian Sun received major
enhancements earlier this year.

Viking River Cruises have been
overwhelmed by demand for longships
since introducing them earlier this year
and will up the fleet by six in 2012, two
more than anticipated.
The new ships are part of company’s
fleet development program, comprised of
several complete refurbishments plus the
introduction of ten new longships by 2014.
Designed by celebrated maritime
architects Yran & Storbraaten - the team
behind the Disney Dream and the Yachts
of Seabourn - the new ships integrate
cutting-edge technology with amenities
that reflect guest preferences and recent
travel trends.
By shifting the corridor one metre
and reorienting the staterooms, Viking
longships offer the largest real suites in
Europe, featuring separate sleeping and
living rooms in each of its Explorer Suites
and Veranda Suites, as well as more full-
size rooms and full-size verandas than
other European river cruise vessels.
In addition, most staterooms feature a
veranda, balcony or both.
Other key innovations include all-
weather indoor/outdoor Aquavit Terrace
that brings the outdoor river scenery
indoors with retractable floor-to-ceiling
glass doors, al fresco dining areas on
the upper deck, energy-efficient hybrid
engines, solar panels and an onboard
organic herb garden.
The six ships are scheduled to
sail Viking’s most popular European
itineraries including the 15-day Grand
European Tour, eight-day Romantic
Danube, eight-day Danube Waltz, 10-day
Tulips & Windmills and eight-day Rhine
Getaway.
Additional departures have also been
added in late 2012 so that guests can
experience Europe’s festive Christmas
markets.
Viking’s all-inclusive pricing features
accommodation, all onboard meals, daily
guided shore excursions, port charges,
shipboard gratuities and more.

No client could object to a cruise after seeing it first
hand.
P&O, the cruise line who controversially invited
Australians to tell them why they wouldn’t cruise
as part of a competition earlier this year, have
launched online cruise videos in the hoping of
enticing new clients.
Featuring footage of shore excursions and port
exploration, P&O hopes the series will inspire more
people to take a cruise.
Told through the eyes of passengers and crew
the videos are shot with handheld cameras offering
honest insights into real cruising experiences.
The destination videos offer a snapshot of some
of the 60 ports P&O Cruises visits.
Meanwhile, a series of onboard videos will offer
viewers a taste of the wide-array of activities and
entertainment on P&O Cruises’ ships including
Luke Mangan’s Salt Grill restaurant.

The Innovative Travel Co. caters to growing demand for
boutique small ship experiences with a wide range of soft
adventure options.
Innovative national sales and marketing manager Carol
Wisker said super yachts in the Aegean and Star Clippers tall
ship sailing in the Mediterranean, Asia and the Caribbean were
among the popular choices.
“Right now we have some fantastic savings on Star Clippers
Northern and Southern Cyclades eight days Athens/Athens now
priced from A$2341 per person share twin (pp twin) saving
25 per cent. There is also eight days Greece & Turkey and
eight days Amalfi Coast & Sicily sailings with similar savings,”
said Wisker. “The really exciting news is that Star Clippers is
expanding its sailing programme into the Scandinavian region
from May to Sept in 2012.”
Also gaining real traction in the Kiwi market is Innovative’s
GSA cruise company programme CrosiEurope River & Coastal
Cruises, which offers more culturally focused cruises and a
French experiences.
“A key point of difference with these cruises is the selection of
three, four and five-day itinerary fillers. In addition, the relaxed
3.5 to 4 star standard has broad appeal and offers great value
for money.”
CroisiEurope operate 26 vessels with more than 1200
departures covering the main European rivers in Spain,
Portugal, France and Italy as well as coastal cruises along
the Adriatic coastline of Croatia and the Red Sea. New to the

active) style of holiday.

Adventure on the high seasWorld Journeys offers a range of adventurous cruise options
across the globe including luxury, hosted options and expedition
style.
On the Nile, steamship MS Misr delivers a colonial
atmosphere and luxury facilities.
Built by the Royal Navy in 1918 and converted into a luxury
steamer for King Farouk in the 1930’s, Misr’s decor reflects the
fashion of the period. The ship has 16 cabins and eight suites
spread over three decks.
All cabins overlook the Nile through panoramic windows and
private balconies. World Journeys director Kate Gohar said
the ships offered elegant dining, a relaxing lounge and bar and
swimming pool with sun deck.
“I highly recommend the MS Misr as a perfect way to take in
the Nile scenery as you float by. Itineraries include all the top
ports of call along the Nile, such as Luxor, Edfu and Aswan, with
excursions to the ancient temples and sites included,” she said.
The trip is priced from $4995 per person share twin.
Escorted cruising is another popular option that fills a gap in
the New Zealand market.
World Journeys director Angela Pirie said Kiwis love getting
amongst the destinations they are visiting.
“World Journeys creates itineraries, which include
accommodation pre/post cruise, often with sightseeing, or
even combining two cruises with a stay on land somewhere in
between.”
Pirie said the aim was to create a seamless travel experience
that takes all the hassle out of travelling to some of the world’s
most fascinating places. Flights, transfers, accommodation,
cruising and special touches such as exclusive onboard cocktail
parties, a cooking class or a special farewell dinner are all
included.
“Travelling with a small group of like-minded Kiwi travellers
also appeals to many who enjoy the company of others, or those
who would otherwise face travelling alone. To this end we offer
a selection of cruise journeys on which solo travellers can enjoy
a guaranteed share twin price if they book at least six months
prior to departure. If we can match them up with a same-gender
traveller we do, but even if not, they still only pay the share twin
price,” said Pirie.
The 2012 range of cruise journeys includes diverse
destinations such as the Mediterranean, Northern Europe,
Canada and Alaska, as well as river cruising options in France
and Portugal or the Black Sea and Russia, and even a traditional
sailing ship cruise in Croatia, combined with touring Italy.
The itineraries are fully escorted from New Zealand once a
minimum of 15 participants has been reached.
For clients keen on Mexico, the newest addition to the
American Safari Cruises fleet is the 86-guest Safari Endeavour,
which commences new Baja’s Bounty adventure cruises from
November 2012 through April 2013.
Weeklong expedition cruises sail roundtrip from La Paz,
Mexico to explore this UNESCO World Heritage Site and
Biosphere Reserve. In true expedition style, the itinerary is
flexible to ensure maximum opportunities to view the array of
wildlife found on land and sea.
Rates start from US$2995 per person share twin including
all from-the-yacht activities and equipment; transfers; meals;
drinks; a massage and all port charges, taxes and fees.

“Get closer to Norway’s beautiful coastline with Hurtigruten”
* valid for bookings made by 31 Dec 2011
For clients who have done it all before Hurtigruten offers
something out of the ordinary.
The product provides an opportunity to cruise up the
Norwegian coastline from Bergen to Kirkenes, visiting 33 ports,
some only accessible via sea.
Local rep Discover the World’s Chris Jones said a Hurtigruten
Voyage was the best way to experience the authentic Norway.
“We sail along the coastline, deeper into the heart of this
spectacular landscape than anyone else,” said Jones.
However, he urged agents to qualify clients before sending
them on the niche product, which is aimed at well-travelled
people who have done Europe and the Mediterranean and are
looking for something different.
“They are working ships carrying cargo and local people.
Passengers will get a private cabin and nice meals but there is
no entertainment. The entertainment is the scenery. It is about
the destination, not the cruise.”
He said it was still a relatively new product in the New
Zealand market but agents were becoming more aware of it and
if sold to the right person it was very popular.
Operating year-round, Hurtigruten offers a choice of
experiences. From July to September itineraries include the
Arctic, Greenland and Spitsbergen (home of the polar bears) on
a three-year old vessel. The Antarctic season takes place from
November to February.
There is an online training programme available to agents
keen to bone up on the full product offering.
