Inco Donates $400,000Winton Newman, president of the Ontario Division of Inco Metals

Company, recently announced that Inco is committing $400,000 in 1980to assist the Sudbury General Hospital obtain a Computed AxialTomography (C.A.T,) Scanner.

The C.A.T. Scanner is a sophisticated piece of diagnostic medicalequipment that is capable of producing a detailed cross-sectional pictureof a patient's body. And, among other things, is useful in the early andaccurate diagnosis of cancer. It is considered to be the most significantinvention in diagnostic medicine since the original discovery of the x-raymachine.

The Sudbury General Hospital has been designated by the Ministry ofHealth as the C.A.T. Scanner site for all of Northeastern Ontario.

No Summer ShutdownThe Ontario Division of Inco Metals Company advised officials of the

United Steelworkers of America, Local 6500, that there will be nosummer vacation shut down in 1980 in its mining and processingoperations in the Sudbury District, with the exception of the Iron OreRecovery Plant.

As the year proceeds, periodic meetings will be held with the union tokeep them advised of market conditions and of any significant change inproduction levels.

The Iron Ore Recovery Plant will have a vacation shut down from July14 to August 10 to allow Canadian Industries Limited to perform majorrepairs to its sulphuric acid plant. Due to environmental controlrestrictions, the Iron Ore Recovery Plant cannot operate while theCanadian Industries Limited plant is closed.

Big Brothers -Understanding the

Once a year we indulge inunbridled displays of love and givingthat make Christmas the joyousoccasion that it is. As each Yuletideends, we inevitably wonder why thewarmth and friendship that came with

it cannot remain with us throughoutthe entire twelve months. For onegroup of men, the Big Brothers ofSudbury, giving a little time and awhole lot of friendship is a perpetualconcern.

Unlike various other organizationswho are geared to working withgroups of boys, Big Brothers' effortsare directed to the special needs ofthe fatherless, individual lad. EachBig Brother shares the conviction thatthough a single mother may provide agood home, a young boy requires themale influence so important to hisdevelopment.

Study after study shows how theproducts of "broken homes" surfaceyears later as society's "problemchildren". By taking an interest in thelives of boys between the ages of 6and 16, men in Big Brothers areoffering a very inexpensive ounce ofprevention that will eliminate a veryexpensive pound of cure down theroad.

Men from all walks of life come tojoin Big Brothers: executives, civilservants, miners and smelterworkers. Currently there are 48 BigBrothers throughout the Sudbury areawith a waiting list of 67 LittleBrothers.

A good number of the volunteers,like Ronald Babin and Donald Doiron(both control room operators in theF.B.R. Building) are Inco MetalsCompany employees. Ask either manand he will tell you that there is moreto life than just work and watchingthe "boob tube". Though both arefamily men they are willing to makesome time for a young person in needof a friend.

All Big Brothers are expected tospend three to four hours per weekwith their Little Brothers. Since theyare matched according to interests.

the pair usually pursue mutuallysatisfying activities. In the case ofBabin and Doiron, an afternoon withtheir Little Brothers may mean afishing trip, taking in a hockey game,helping to build a model ship, working

on the car or just taking a walk andchatting. Nothing, of course, is donewithout the mother's approval.

For the few hours a week theseand other Big Brothers invest, therewill be no renumeration. The rewards

they reap will not be subject toincome tax, COLA clauses or inflationrates. Their payment will lie in theknowledge they have helped a youngfellow down the road of life and to anunderstanding of the value of friendship.

TriangleJust what is "acid rain"?

Dr. J. Stuart Warneri think it would be helpful to talkabout ''normal rain'first. This is rainwhich has absorbed small amounts ofthe carbon dioxide in the air, As aresult, normal rain contains 25 timesmore acid than does pure water."Acid rain" is rain that contains evenmore acid than does normal rain.Rain falling in large areas ofnortheastern North America isfrequently 25 times more acidic thannormal rain. This acid may bepresent as sulphuric, nitric orhydrochloric acids.

Acid RainA Complex Issue

Acid rain is a controversialsubject that has made newsheadlines around the world. In aneffort to better understand thiscomplex subject the Trianglerecently talked with Dr. J. StuartWarner, a vice-president with IncoLimited who has corporateresponsibility for environmental andoccupational health policies andprograms.

He joined Inco in 1966 and wasdirector of the Company's J. RoyGordon Research Laboratory fromSeptember, 1969 until April, 1976when he was appointed assistantvice-president, Inco Limited. He wasappointed vice-president inNovember, 1976.

Dr. Warner has recently appearedas an expert guest on severalnational TV programs including,"Canada AM", "The Fifth Estate",and "Point Blank" . He holds severaldegrees from Columbia Universityincluding a Doctor of EngineeringScience. He was an instructor andan assistant professor atColumbia's Henry Krumb School ofMines from 1960 until 1968, wherehe specialized in teachingthermodynamics and kinetics asapplied to extractive metallurgy.

Dr. Warner is also the author ofvarious technical papers and is co-inventor of pyrometallurgicalprocesses for the recovery of nickelfrom sulphide ores.

TriangleDo these three acids play equalroles in making rain more acidicthan normal rain?

WarnerNo. Their roles vary from place toplace and from time to time but, ingeneral, it is found in eastern NorthAmerica that sulphuric acid isresponsible for roughly two-thirds ofthe acid in acid rain. Nitric acidusually contributes only about one-third of the acid but its contribution isgrowing rapidly. In fact, some studiesindicate that the increased amount ofnitric acid in the air is responsible formost of the increase in the acidity ofthe rain that has been observed inthe last two decades. Hydrochloricacid usually contributes five per centor less of the acid in acid rain.

TriangleWhere do these acids come from?

WarnerThey are sometimes emitted directlyinto the atmosphere as a byproductof various human activities. However,most of the sulphuric and nitric acidsare formed from airborne sulphurdioxide and oxides of nitrogen. Justhow these gases are changed intoacids is not well understood but thereactions seem to depend on factorssuch as temperature, humidity, theintensity of sunlight and the presenceof other substances such as metalliccompounds, ammonia, urban smog,etc.On a global basis, man and naturemay be equally responsible for theairborne sulphur dioxide. However, inheavily industrialized areas such as

eastern North America and westernEurope, man is probably responsiblefor 90 per cent of these gases.A recent report of the United States-Canada Research Consultation Groupestimated that in 1975, Canadaemitted 5 million metric tons ofsulphur dioxide while the US emitted25.7 million metric tons. During thesame period oxides of nitrogenemissions were estimated to be 1.9million metric tons for Canada and22.2 million metric tons for the US.The largest source of sulphur dioxidein Canada was the non-ferroussmelting industry (44 per cent) whilecoal and oil fired electrical generatingstations in the US accounted for 65per cent of its sulphur dioxideemissions. Transportation is thelargest source of oxides of nitrogen inboth countries - 43 per cent inCanada and 45 per cent in the US butelectrical generating stationscontributed 27 per cent of the USoxides of nitrogen emissions.

TriangleDo emissions from the CopperCliff smelter contribute to theacidity of the rain?

WarnerThe sulphur dioxide we emit atCopper Cliff is no different from thesulphur dioxide which anyone elseemits so it can be oxidized tosulphuric acid and thus contribute tothe acidity of rain and snow.Chemical theory suggests and actualmeasurements made in thesuperstack plume indicated oursulphur dioxide is not oxidized asrapidly as it would be if it has beenemitted in, say, the Ohio RiverValley. However, this is a result ofthe atmospheric conditions thatusually prevail in Ontario.It is important to recognize that thesmelter emits essentially no oxides ofnitrogen.

TriangleA recent Scientific Americanarticle said the smelter emitsabout 1 per cent of the total annualemissions of sulphur throughoutthe world. Is this so?

WarnerIt's impossible to be precise but Ibelieve that estimate is reasonable.The smelter is, so far as we know,

the largest point source of manmadesulphur dioxide in the world. Trianglereaders may be interested to knowthat nature has at least one pointsource of comparable size - MountEtna, a volcano in Sicily.Another interesting fact is that Inco isnot the largest corporate emitter ofsulphur dioxide. I raise the pointbecause if it's acidic rain you'reconcerned about, it doesn't matterwhether pollutants are emitted fromone stack or from many. Even if youadd the emissions from theThompson and Copper Cliff smelters,they are considerably smaller thanthe combined emissions of the 14fuel fired electric generating stationsoperated by the Tennessee ValleyAuthority, an agency of the USgovernment. The American ElectricPower Co. Inc., a private UScompany, is roughly comparable toInco relative to sulphur dioxideemissions. Both these utilities emitlarge quantities of oxides of nitrogenwhere Inco emits essentially none.

TriangleInco's emissions may be small ona global or a continental scale butthey are a very large proportion ofthe sulphur dioxide emitted inOntario or in Canada. Don't theyhave a major influence on theacidity of rain in the province?

WarnerThe Ontario Ministry of theEnvironment sampled theprecipitation around Sudbury and inthe Haliburton-Muskoka area duringthe 1978 summer shutdown of Inco

and Falconbridge. The acidity of therain did not decrease even in theabsence of the Sudbury emissions.The Ministry gathered a lot more dataduring the strike but has notpublished it yet. I am guessing it willshow the rain will still be quite acidiceven with no emission from Inco.This is not to say that we make nocontribution to the acidity of the rain.It does, however, clearly establishthat we are not the major source ofacid.

TriangleWell then where did the acid comefrom?

WarnerThe Ministry's data indicate that mostof the acid in rain falling in theHaliburton-Muskoka area came fromUS sources. That is why both Dr.Parrott, (Minister of the Environment,Ontario) and Mr. Fraser, (Minister ofthe Environment, Canada) haveemphasized that Canada is unable tosolve its problem alone. Internationalcooperation is essential.

TriangleAre you sure lnco's sulphur dioxidewasn't oxidized and deposited asacid rain in locations outsideOntario?

WarnerOne of the reasons it is so difficult toplan effective strategies to controlacidic precipitation is that we don'tknow how to link acid rain in onearea with a specific source of sulphurdioxide or oxides of nitrogen a longdistance away. We may never knowthe ultimate fate of our emissions.I did however, examine the acidity ofprecipitation in samples collected bythe federal government at numerousstations in Quebec and the Maritimeprovinces during Inco's shutdown andstrike. The data is not conclusivebecause of the way it was collectedbut I did not observe any decrease inacidity when Inco was not emitting.

TriangleWhat effect does acid rain have onthe environment?

WarnerWe have talked exclusively aboutacid rain but this might be a goodtime to point out that snow can also

be acidic. It may produce moreserious environmental impacts thanacid rain in the cold Canadianclimate. That is because itaccumulates for long periods andthen releases all its stored acid to theenvironment in one surge when itmelts. It is probably better to talkabout "acidic precipitation" meaningboth rain and snow.

The most obvious environmentalimpact of acidic precipitation is onfish and other aquatic life. It canaffect them in at least two ways : bymaking the water too acid or byleaching toxic metals from rock andsoils. Lakes in the Canadian shieldare susceptible to this kind ofdamage because the underlying rockis not able to neutralize the acid inprecipitation - at least not withoutreleasing toxic amounts of metalssuch as aluminum and manganese.It also seems clear that acidicprecipitation can hasten thedeterioration of metal, masonry,paint, etc., exposed to it.There is a potential for reductions inforest productivity and for damage toagricultural crops but so far sucheffects have been observed onlyunder laboratory conditions and atpH levels well below those normallyobserved in the field.Confusing statements are being madein the literature about health effects.Most of the quoted studies andreports actually deal with sulphurdioxide and oxides of nitrogen, theraw materials from which acidicprecipitation is made. So far as Iknow, the only possible health effectsthat could stem from acidicprecipitation itself would be due tocontamination of drinking water bymetals released from rock, soil orplumbing.

TriangleIs the problem going to diminishnow that there is widespreadawareness of the adverse effectsof acidic precipitation?

WarnerNo. As a matter of fact, it may getworse before it gets better. The USEnvironmental Protection Agency hasprojected that even with tightemission controls on new plants,sulphur dioxide emissions will actuallyincrease for the next couple of

decades. This increase is theexpected result of increased relianceon coal to generate electrical power.Sometime in the next century sulphurdioxide emissions are expected tobegin to decrease as old plants arereplaced by new ones subject tostringent emission controls.The EPA also forecasts a significantincrease in oxides of nitrogenemissions so nitric acid willcontribute increasingly to the acidityof precipitation. If more attention isn'tpaid to this problem, we might solvethe sulphur dioxide problem and findthat acidic precipitation carries onalmost as it does now.

I don't know what Canadianprojections for oxides of nitrogenemissions are but I believe sulphurdioxide emissions have decreasedsubstantially over the years and willcontinue to do so.If damage is occurring at presentemission rates, it does not appearthat things will improve for at leasttwo decades. We could expect to seecontinued damage to aquatic systemsin Canada during this period.

TriangleWhat do you think should be done?

WarnerThere are a number of actions thatshould be taken. First of all, a treatybetween Canada and the US is anabsolute must. Secondly bothcountries should establish andrigorously enforce stringent emissionperformance standards for new plantsof all kinds. Third, existing sources ofsulphur dioxide and oxides of nitrogenshould be examined on an individualbasis to see whether additionalabatement is technically andeconomically feasible. Fourth, wemust also develop new technology tocontrol oxides of nitrogen emission.

However, these actions will nothappen soon enough to preventfurther damage to our lakes if thepreliminary estimates of theircapacity to withstand further acidinputs are correct. I believemeasures must be developed andimplemented to protect the lakes untilthe source of the problem, excessiveemissions of sulphur dioxide andoxides of nitrogen are resolved.

TriangleWhat will Inco do to help solve thisproblem?

WarnerLets talk for a moment about whatInco has already done. Some peoplesay that what we've done in the pastdoesn't matter - that all that counts isthat the smelter is still the largestmanmade point source of sulphurdioxide in the world. I say it doesmatter. If we had never been ableand willing to reduce our emissions inthe past, it would be harder to believeour stated intention to find a way todo it again in the future.Control of suphur dioxide emissionsbegan at Copper Cliff beforeenvironmental concern became apopular public issue and long beforeanyone was aware of acidicprecipitation. Development of theInco oxygen flash furnace technologyfor copper smelting provided a stronggas stream for the production ofliquid sulphur dioxide. About 100,000tons of liquid sulphur dioxide hasbeen produced each year since theearly 1950's.

Also during the 1950's developmentof the technology to separatepyrrhotite from the nickel and copperconcentrates led to a majorsecondary industry - the Iron OreRecovery Plant and CIL's associatedsulphuric acid plants. Currently morethan 500,000 tons per year of sulphurdioxide are converted to sulphuricacid. Completion of the Clarabellemill in 1972 led to further pyrrhotiteseparation from smelter feed and a40 per cent reduction in our sulphurdioxide emissions, a majorachievement by any standard. Atpresent, only 30 per cent of thesulphur in the ore is discharged fromthe smelter as sulphur dioxide.

Inco also worked hard at someprojects that did not pay off. Wespent nine years and $14 million on ahydrometallurgical process that wouldavoid the formation of sulphur dioxidebut were forced to conclude it wouldnot be a satisfactory solution. Wealso spent $9 million on developingmethods to capture strong sulphurdioxide from the existing convertersin order to make sulphuric acid from

it. However, the water-cooled hoodsand special flue systems installed onthree converters have not lived up toour expectations.

TriangleWhat is Inco trying now that willreduce emissions in the future?

WarnerWe continue to hope that morepyrrhotite can be rejected with nosignificant penalty in metal losses.We have spent more than six yearson basic flotation research at the J.Roy Gordon Research Laboratory andit has provided some promising leads.These are now being tried out in theMineral Dressing Test Centre inCopper Cliff. If these developmentswork it would mean a 25% reductionin emissions.Even if more pyrrhotite can berejected, we will still have lots ofsulphur to contend with in the nickeland copper concentrates. The onlypractical way we see to deal with thisis to convert it to sulphuric acid. Weare looking for other ways to conductthe roasting-smelting-converting.processes so as to provide access toessentially all the sulphur dioxide at astrength suitable for making acid.Another of our goals is to improve theenvironment inside the smelter at thesame time.When we find out how to do thesethings - and we will find a way - wewill be faced with the difficultproblem of marketing sulphuric acid.We have asked the government tothink about ways to ease this problemas we have so far not been able tofind customers for this large tonnageof acid.

TriangleIs there any danger that productionat Copper Cliff will be cut back inorder to reduce our sulphur dioxideemission?WarnerWe do not think this is an attractiveoption. We believe we can find waysto make further reductions inemissions and still keep the Sudburyoperation competitive with otherproducers of nickel. This will nothappen over night and it will not becheap, but we are confident it can bedone

South M ine EmployeesAdopt New Son

Thanks to the employees at CopperCliff South mine, six-year oldSantiago Gamez Garcia, ofHonduras, situated in the heart ofCentral America, stands at the brinkof a new life - a life which will beconsiderably better for him and hisfamily. Santiago has become a fosterchild, adopted by South mineemployees.

Around Santiago's collection box are, kneeling , from left, Wayne Kennedy and Bill Dyck. Backrow, John Smith, Bob Lalonde, Ken Pollock, Arnie Hoppe and Tony Harek. In addition to themonthly commitment, a sizeable cheque was forwarded to the foster child in time for this year'sChristmas season.

"We wanted to provide help forneedy children by becomingparticipants in the Foster ParentsPlan of Canada," said ElwoodWohlberg, chairman of the fosterchild committee at Copper Cliff Southmine. "Our approach to safety is thesame as our approach to a fosterchild. We try to develop a team spiritwhereby each employee is aware ofhis fellow employee's problems."

The idea of adopting a foster childsoon spread throughout the mine,and before long an application,accompanied by an initialpayment, was forwarded to theFoster Parents Plan of Canada.

A reply wasn't long in coming,informing South mine employees thatthey had adopted Santiago. Alongwith this information came the historyand general information on Southmine's new foster child:

"Santiago Gamez Garcia is a veryenergetic child. He has blue eyes,brown hair, a fair complexion and astrong build. He has no handicaps,deficiencies nor malformations. He isbright and alert.

"He will soon be going to AdanCanales Primary School ; meanwhile,he helps around the house doingsmall chores, such as fetching water.The rest of the time he plays with hisfive brothers and three sisters orother little friends. Like many childrenin Honduras, he likes to playsoccer."

Santiago's parents are hardworkers. His father is a peasantfarmer, and his mother remains athome, dedicated to her children andhousehold duties. The parents live a

quiet and harmonious life, withunderstanding on both parts. Thefather is the sole provider. He earnsapproximately $1.25 per day or $7.50each week. He does not own anyland but rents a few acres on whichhe cultivates beans and corn whichbarely produce enough for the familyneeds.

Santiago's house is very poor andinadequate for the size of the family.the house has adobe walls which arein bad shape, a tiled roof andcemented floor. Their householdfurniture consists of two woodenchairs, a foot stool and a bed. Thedwelling lacks running water andelectricity. Water is obtained from apit well. At night, pitch pine torchesare used to illuminate the dwelling.There are no lavatory facilities.

According to Elwood, voluntaryparticipation in the plan has beenmost encouraging, with mineemployees enthusiasticallycontributing their share to cover themonthly payments.

"Our foster child's photograph,along with other pertinent data, hasbeen posted on the display board inthe warm room, and our people stayinformed of Santiago's developmentby referring to the board," saysElwood.

The cost of the program is $19 permonth, plus a $1.50 bank servicecharge. A plexiglass container hasbeen set up in the warm room toaccept contributions.

Elwood says that more childrenmay be adopted if the money buildsup. Also, the committee may look foran opportunity to contribute toworthwhile organizations in theSudbury area.

In a solemnly impressive memorial service in At the service in front of the Copper CliffCopper Cliff on Remembrance Day, citizens Legion, veterans of the war marched with youthand civic, military and service club from the modern military establishment andorganizations joined in tribute to those who then stood silently to renew a solemn pledge:gave their lives in defence of their country. "We shall not forget".

At the Copper Cliff cenotaph, Copper Cliffcadets joined other organizations to reaffirmtheir memory of those who gave the ultimatesacrifice.

inco pensioner, Dick Dow, was one of many who participated at wreath laying ceremonies at theCopper Cliff cenotaph.

It was another big year for Inco's Quarter Century Club as 301 newmembers join the class of '79. In Copper Cliff 268 new members swelledthe ranks of the Copper Cliff chapter to 8,643 while in Port Colborne 41new members brought their chapter up to 879.

New members at both locations were entertained by top Canadiantalent. Mary-Lou Collins and Marg Westfall headlined the entertainmentportions of the program.

Dinner and dance music was supplied by Eddie Graf who delightedhis audience with a selection of tunes ranging form the big band soundof the 40's to today's disco tunes.

It is interesting to note that, back in 1954 when this year's 25-yearemployees first joined the Company, several events were reported inthe Triangle. Among them were: the blasthole mining method wasintroduced at Levack mine to excavate a slusher station; work startedon a new 400-foot chimney at the Coniston smelter ; and a great crowdgathered at the Sudbury Arena to welcome home the Sudbury Wolvesfrom their gallant quest of the Allen Cup. The spring of 1954 saw one ofthe largest tree plantings at Inco homes in the Sudbury area, and, lastbut not least, Inco's Quarter Centry Club, with chapters in Canada, theUnited Kingdom and the United States, boasted a membership of2,033.

The cold wind cuts across theparking lot like a double edged sword- first one way and then the other -driving the snow against the building,where it collects in ever growingpiles. People clutch at their collarstrying in vain to keep the wind out asthey scurry to the door.

A quick pull on the door andsuddenly another world materializesbefore their eyes. A world of warmth,color, beauty and life - totallydifferent from the stark, cold, whiteworld of snow outside. For a briefmoment they stand stunned, and donothing but blink their eyes and takein the surroundings.

There are hundreds of begonias,chrysanthamums, azealas, poinsettasand cyclamens in all the colors ofChristmas. The chirping of birds can

The greenhouse is open from1 :00 p.m. to 9:00 p.m. Mondaythrough Saturday and from noon until9:00 p.m. on Sunday with theexception of December 24 and 31,when the greenhouse closes at 6:00p.m. It will also be closed New YearsDay.

and the first Christmas show washeld that year. However, Inco hashad a greenhouse since 1944 but itwas much smaller than the one wenow have."

Every year there is alwayssomething about the Christmas showthat is different from the year before.This year is no exception. In additionto the plants, there are also severaldisplays showing some of theactivities of the agriculturaldepartment.

A scale model of the experimentalgreenhouse at Copper Cliff Southmine is on display and that, alongwith drawings will give you a prettygood idea of how waste heat from themine's ventilation system is used toprovide heat for growing plants.

There is also a simulated

underground growing area, completewith special lights to give visitors anidea of how Laurentian University andInco are doing a joint study ofgrowing plants underground.

Planning for this year's Christmasshow started shortly after last year'sshow was finished. "It is a groupeffort involving all members of theagricultural department," said Tom."Everyone pitches in to make theshow a success. Even after the showis finished the whole area has to becleaned up, and in fact most of theplants are given away to places likehospitals and senior citizenresidences. After all it's only a fewmore months until summer and wehave to start planning for that."

From Port Colborne this month we have the Leon Smith family. Leon isa nine year veteran of ln,co service and is a laboratory technologist atthe research station complex. He is an avid football fan and enjoysdoing chemical experiments with cosmetics. Leon and his wife Maureenhave six children, they are. Keith, 19, Elizabeth, 16, Anthony, 14,Shawn, 13, Kaye, 12, and Charlton, 10.

This is Fred Gervais and his wife Brenda with sons Joshua, 2 andChristoper, 6 months. Fred is a motorman at Creighton five shaft andhas been with Inco for six years. He is a member of the Knights ofColumbus, is active in sports and enjoys listening to his stereo.

Morris Hucal and his wife Sonia have four children. They are;Katherine, 4, John, 10, Morris Junior, 14 and Peter, 15. Morris is amaintenance general foreman at the converter building in the CopperCliff smelter and has been with Inco for 24 years. The Hucal familyhave a summer cottage on Whitewater Lake and have spent many awarm summer day enjoying themselves there.

Art WilcoxMemories from a Centuryof Experience

His steel blue eyes glow with anintensity that seems to look rightthrough you when he speaks. Like asmoldering fire that suddenly burstsinto flame when fanned, Art's eyesflash with their own inner fire whenhe talks about any of his favoritesubjects, such as the sea.

The son of a ship's master, ArtWilcox was born in Cardiff, Walesduring the era of the great oceanliners. "Ships were the only way totravel between continents," said Art."I wanted to see the world so Ifollowed in my father's footsteps andwent to sea at the age of 11 ."

Art can recall sailing the NorthAtlantic on one of his first voyages.''We arrived at the city of Odessa inthe southern Ukraine and I canremember an old lady with a childtrimming the ship's cargo while wewere docked,'Art stated "She was

working very hard in the ship's holdand you could tell that she wasalmost starving to death. The ship'ssteward slipped her some food whenno one was watching and the look onthat woman's face was a sight Inever forgot."

Art also spent many years workingin shipyards and one of his first jobswas that of a heater boy. "The job ofa heater boy was to hold hot rivetsused in the construction of ships. Ilearned to hold the glowing rivets in aspecial ladle and would toss them upto the riveters when they requiredthem.

"I was making half-a-crown a weekas an apprentice ship-builder in theport of Sunderland on the east coastof England."

Acetylene torches were justcoming into use and Art was one ofthe first pioneers to learn this new

technology while attending CardiffTechnical College.

Art would probably still be living inthe British Isles if the economicsituation at the time had beendifferent. But in the years prior to thedepression there was a slump in ship-building and there was no work to befound so Art was forced to lookelsewhere for employment. By thistime he had a family of his own andwas desperately in need of a job.

"I had an uncle living in Garson,"said Art, "and I wrote him fromEngland to inquire about the jobsituation in Canada. My uncle wroteback stating that I could probably geta job with Inco and that was all Ineeded to hear. So in 1925 I packedup the family and came to Canada."

Art's risk paid off for him when hewas hired to work for Inco at thepowerhouse. He spent virtually all ofhis Inco service at the powerhouseand proudly admits that he passed hisexams qualifying him as a powerhouse engineer when he was 60. Heretired in 1946 at the age of 66 with21 years of service.

Art's wife died in 1968 and of allthe things that happened in his longlife this is the only thing he regrets.His three surviving children are:Isabella Stone in Sudbury, MargaretHolywell in Toronto and George inSudbury. He has seven grand-children, 14 great-grand-children, and two great-great-grandchildren.

Outside of diminished hearingcapacity, Art is in good health and isquite content to remain in Sudbury.When asked if there were any secretshe could pass on about his longevityhe replied: "I never abused my body.I saw too many people do things inexcess when I was aboard ships, so Idecided at a young age to take careof my body and do things inmoderation. I have also led an activelife and I think that that had a lot todo with it."

Art is an avid reader and likesnothing better than to curl up with hisfavorite reading material which is theNational Geographic. Even though hecan no longer physically travel theworld as he did in his sea-faring dayshe travels with his mind through thepages of National Geographic. "Iguess the sea will always be in myveins," he said.

Mining for Nickel with a CameraIt was some 20 years ago that the

first of a five-film series, ''Mining theSudbury Nickel Ores', was shot andedited for viewing in schools bystudents and teachers.

With changing mining methods, itwas decided in 1967 to update thefilm, and additional material was shotto cover the shaft sinking atCreighton's number nine shaft, openpit dredging, mine mechanization andother newly adopted mininginnovations.

The revised film, while includingmuch of its previous content, had tobe cut to classroom length (36minutes).

With an increasing demand fromeducational institutions for up-to-dateinformation on Inco's miningoperations , it was felt that acompletely new approach should betaken and that a new version of the"Mining for Nickel" movie be shotwith only the shaft sinking and openpit dredging sequences from theprevious film included in the newversion.

According to Bob Hamer, seniorpublic relations advisor at IncoLimited's office in Toronto, the new"Mining for Nickel " film, in additionto covering exploration, will explainall the considerations that go intoestablishing a mining operation.Special emphasis is placed onenvironmental aspects, financing,marketing etc.

"Instead of filming from adetached point of view,'' says Bob.we are attempting to introduce

mining through the eyes of two minebeginners. This permits us to explainmining methods through classroomlectures . The instructor can explainthe various mining techniques withblackboard drawings , plans or slides,accompanied by live-action footage."

Shooting of the new version of"Mining for Nickel" recentlycommenced at Inco Metalsoperations in Thompson , Manitoba.Director Don Haldane, ofWestminister Films Limited , and hiscrews spent the better part of twoweeks reshooting footage at T-1 andT-3 mines.

Following the completion of theirshooting at Thompson, Don and hiscrew relocated to Levack West andCopper Cliff South mines, shootingthousands of feet of 35 mm film.

All of the film is shot on the 35 mmformat and later reduced to 16 mm.This results in increased clarity andtop quality.

Major photography has now beencompleted, and footage is presentlybeing assembled to determine whatanimation and additional filming willbe required.

It is expected that the final productwill be available for public viewingsometime next summer.

Film crews carefully follow a charge of Hydromex, an explosive, as it is lowered into the 6%2-inchdiameter blasthole.

shortage of men available for thevoluntary fire brigade becamealarming. It was at this stage that theUtilities Department invited the ladiesof Inco employees of the threevillages to join. The response wasgreat, with a large majority indicatingtheir willingness to participate.

The ladies have since been trainedby Jack Hall and Fred Mansfield, ofInco's fire prevention department, inthe theory and application of thechemistry of fire, portableextinguishers, hose handling,breathing apparatus, search andrescue and Wajax pumpingequipment.

According to Gerry Cullain,manager of Central Utilities, this isthe first time that such anundertaking has been adopted.

"Although they have as yet notbeen required to respond to a fire,thanks to the ladies, our voluntary firebrigade is ready to cope with anysituation that may arise," he said.

Of its many opportunities to draw attention to worthwhilecommunity activities, none gives the Triangle keener satisfactionthan a salute to gardeners. Inco people who make a hobby ofbeautifying their home grounds not only give pleasure tothemselves and their families; they also gladden the eyes andhearts of their neighbors and visitors to whom a well-groomedlawn is a sure sign of civic pride and sound citizenship. A unique cultural and educational program, " Up with People",an independent, non-profit, educational corporation, recentlytoured the Sudbury District where they performed at the SudburyArena as part of Spectrum 1979. In addition, the cast of 109young people between the ages of 16 and 25, representing 14countries from around the world, toured the Chelmsford ValleySchool, Prince Charles, Lansdowne and St. Francis Schools,made possible by special funding from Inco Metals Company'sOntario Division. "Up with People", according to one of itstravelling members, is high energy showmanship with a positiveoutlook on man. Much of the material is about brotherhood anduniversal feelings. The show has been reviewed as the "highestcalibre family entertainment available today". Cup is slated to get underway inJanuary. This year's edition willconsist of four events and bringstogether the best young skiers inNorthen Ontario under competitiveracing conditions.

The Inco Cup ski competition wasstarted in the winter of 1973-74 andhas been held every year since thenThe ski series is sponsored by theOntario Division of Inco MetalsCompany but the competition is rununder the auspices of the NorthernOntario Ski Division.

Denise Fournier is a grade seven student at Pinecrest PublicSchool in Val Caron. She is the daughter of Ernest and GiselleFournier. Ernest is a dryman at the Frood-Stobie complex andis a 15 year employee.
