NAMALAKA NEWS—Malawi Culture as a Woman by Sister Parish Visitor Angelina Emmanuel, Head
School Mistress ((Principal) Part 1—The majority of people in Malawi are women. They are victims of social and economic inequalities aris-
ing from negative cultural practices, discriminating laws and policies. There is low women representation in key
decision making positions. There is low participation of girls in math, science subjects and education at all lev-
els. In the agricultural sector 70% of farmers are women yet access to land ownership and credit facilities is
limited to women. Women should have a right to full and equal protection by the law. A fair share of property is
owned jointly with their husbands. Due to some cultural reasons, however, it is observed that these women
rights are violated in most cases. Culturally women are at a disadvantage in marriage, family and property rights
due to low levels of literacy among them. Discrimination in work, business and public affairs exist. Women are
discriminated against promotions even if they perform better than the men. They are sometimes denied loans
by banks until the husband approves and are sometimes told to surrender their monthly salary to their husband.

Celebrating
CHRIST THE KING
Sunday
WHY do we celebrate Christ the King Sunday? It is a per-fect way to end the our Christian year, the last Sun-day before Advent. This year Advent begins Novem-ber 27.
WHEN did Catholics first celebrate this feast? In 1925 Pope Pius XI (eleventh) called for the Christ the King cele-bration. The world was recovering from World War I. He wanted to remind people in the modern world that Christ is the true ruler of the world.
HOW do we celebrate? At Saint Brendan parish, the color is WHITE with gold trim. We use incense for the Mass, and we process in with an ICON of Christ the King.

In advance of the canonization of Mother Teresa of
Calcutta, the Knights of Columbus commissioned
American artist Chas Fagan to paint the portrait that
later became the official canonization image of
Mother Teresa. As part of their gift, the Knights also
printed more than one million prayer cards which
were distributed at the canonization Mass cele-
brated by Pope Francis. Since 1988, the Knights of
Columbus printing plant has been producing all pub-
lications required by Mother Teresa’s congregation.

NEED CHRISTMAS GIVING TREE VOLUNTEERS Would you like to be a real live Santa? Sarah Beeson and Ker-
rie Mayans would like to turn over this wonderful ministry after
this holiday season. Ideally any interested person would be
able to shadow this holiday season so they would know next
year how to run it. Giving Tree is fairly simple to run and is ex-
tremely rewarding. You actually deliver presents to people in
need. Multiple agencies depend on the wonderful donations they receive
each year. We will also need volunteers to help with distribution, delivery and
clean-up. We will meet in the Narthex on December 11 at Noon. Please
contact Sarah Beeson at sarahshines@hotmail.com if interested.

words of encouragement. Cost is $5.

Narthex the weekend of Nov.
