Could there be anything better than celebrating Canada’s greatest jazz pianist, Oscar Peterson, by featuring music from one of his finest recordings “Night Train” performed by what could easily be described as the most exciting piano trio in the country today – Robi Botos on piano with Order of Canada recipients Dave Young on bass and Terry Clarke on drums.
Originally released in 1962, Oscar Peterson’s trio recording “Night Train” with Ray Brown and Ed Thigpen included stately covers of blues and R&B standards like “The Honeydripper,” “C-Jam Blues,” “Georgia on My Mind,” “Bags’ Groove,” “Moten Swing,” and “Things Ain’t What They Used to Be.”
For the 50th anniversary of the release of “Night Train” and with the support of the Peterson family, the Night Train Trio was formed to recreate this great music.
Hungarian born pianist Robi Botos immigrated to Canada in 1998 and has quickly joined the ranks of Canada’s elite jazz musicians. Having been mentored by Oscar Peterson, he has received numerous awards and accolades throughout his career, the latest being the 2012 TD Grand Jazz award at The Montreal International Jazz Festival.
Dave Young is, without a doubt, one of Canada’s most valuable and beloved musical exports. One of his most beloved gigs was a five year stint as a member of iconic jazz guitarist Lenny Breau’s quartet. One of the many musicians with whom he has performed is Oscar Peterson, a collaboration that lasted over thirty-five years.
A top mainstream jazz drummer for nearly fifty years, Terry Clarke first gained international recognition as part of John Handy’s award-winning 1960’s band. For nearly fifty years, he has been regarded as perhaps Canada’s best drummer. He has appeared on over 300 albums and worked with many national and international jazz greats including, of course, Oscar Peterson.

He has toured across Canada and around
the world on countless occasions. One of
his longest-standing collaborations is with

“Spectacular” and 2005’s “Deep Cove” which
also featured Renee Rosnes and Neil Swainson.
Of more recent vintage is his 2008 “Joined at
the Hip” CD on Cellar Live with Edmonton’s own
P.J. Perry, the late Ross Taggart on piano, and
a rhythm section of Neil Swainson and Terry
Clarke, truly an all-star group.
Any jazz fan who enjoys the “P.J. Perry” sound
will definitely find Campbell Ryga and his
bandmates, pianist Bob Murphy, bassist Mike
Lent and drummer Sandro Dominelli, to their
liking.

Canadian band that blends virtuosic jazz and
funk with eye-catching costumes and over the
top stage antics to produce a high energy show.
A hit at festivals all over the world from Bangkok
to Berlin, the Shuffle Demons are a crowd-
pleasing, full-on musical group that backs up
wild stage antics with phenomenal playing.
Featuring three of Canada’s most respected
saxophonists (Richard Underhill, Perry White

(Edmonton’s own George Koller) all dressed
in wacky clothes, the Shuffle Demons play an

Sun Ra, Charles Mingus, Run DMC and the Beastie
Boys. This band is genre-bending, highly visually

All their eye-catching, crowd-pleasing stunts are
backed up by incredibly solid musicianship and
real, energetic playing.
Among the group’s legendary hits from their early
street music days in Toronto are such tunes as
“Spadina Bus”, “Out of My House” and “Roach”.
The band has toured extensively in Europe and
around the world since 1984 and released their
latest CD ‘ClusterFunk’ in 2012 to rave reviews.
Their Yardbird Suite gig follows a two week
Australia/New Zealand tour, so get ready to

With his debut release on
Vancouver’s Songlines label
receiving rave reviews from
publications such as the New
York Jazz Record and Signal
to Noise, pianist, accordionist
and composer Tyson Naylor
has been quick to establish
himself in the fabric of Canada’s creative music
scene after three years living in Berlin. While
in Berlin, Naylor performed with formidable
free jazz players such as saxophonist Tobias
Delius and cellist Tristan Honsinger, both of
Amsterdam’s ICP Orchestra.
This past summer, the Tyson Naylor Trio
performed to critical acclaim at jazz festivals
across Canada as well as stages in Montreal,
Ottawa, Halifax, Rochester and New York City.
The New York City Jazz Record’s Terrell Holmes
noted, “The strength and power in Naylor’s
playing grabs the listener by the shoulders.
Alain Bédard began his
professional career in the
1980s and has worked as a
sideman with various groups.
In 1994, he founded his own
jazz band Auguste. Since
then, the group has turned
repeatedly in Canada, Europe
and the U.S.A. He has recorded three albums
under his own name - “eponym” in 1997, “Sphere
Reflection” in 2006 and “Bluesy Lunedi” in 2008
which was Juno award-nominated in the Best
Jazz Album of the Year category as well as by
ADISQ in Quebec.
Bédard is also the artistic director and the
bassist for Effendi Jazzlab which is recognized
as one of the leading bands of Canadian jazz. As
president of the Effendi record label, Alain has
been responsible for the release of many fine
