NextWednesdaywecelebrate theFeastDayNanoNagle, the founderof thePresentaGonOrderofSisterswithawholeschoolMassat8.45am.

BornHonora (Nano)Nagle in1718 at Ballygriffin in Cork,Ireland, Nano was sent toFrance by her parents in hery o u t h w h e r e s h e w a seducated and lived for 16years.ShereturnedtoIrelandaZer her father’s death and,inspired by her s ister ’scompassion for the poor, shelater travelled back to France where she entered a BenedicGne convent atYprestoprayforthoseconfrontedbymisery,povertyandhopelessnessbackinIreland.AshortGmelater,withthesupportofaspiritualdirector,sherealisedthathervocaGonwastoreturntoIrelandtoaddresstheinjusGceofthePenalLaws that denied an educaGon to thepoor Irish children and to care for thepoorandoppressed.In1754attheageof36sheestablishedherfirstschoolincomplete secrecywith30poor children,whichwas indirect contradicGonofthelaw.Withinayearshehad200studentsandoverthenext15yearsthishadgrown to 7 schools throughout Cork. It was through educaGon that NanobelievedshecouldaddresstherootcausesofpovertyandsystemicinjusGce.In1783 she built a home for aged and desGtute women, many of whom sheencounteredduringher“lanternwalks”.InJanuary1775attheageof56Nanoinvited two youngwomenwhoassistedher inher schools to joinher as thefirstmembersofherownreligiousorder.OnChristmaseve1775Nano’sowncongregaGonofsisterswasestablished–theSistersofCharitableInstrucGonofthe SacredHeart ofJesus.When, in 1805, theOrderwas approvedbyRome,thenameofthecongregaGonwaschangedto“ThePresentaGonSistersoftheBlessedVirginMary”.Nanodiedon26April 1784withher lastwords to thesmallgroupofsistersatherbedside:

“Love one another as you have hitherto done. Spend yourselves

for the poor”

In2003NanoNaglewasnamedthe“GreatestIrishpersonofallGme”.Maywefollowtheexamplethatshehasprovidedinallthatwedo.
