Twenty years ago, one town took a stand against hate and violence.
Hundreds of communities followed with their own actions, and a
movement took shape.
Today, the Not In Our Town National Leadership Gathering brings
together remarkable everyday heroes from around the country to:
GET INSPIRED with strategy sessions and interactive
trainings from NIOT leaders.
MEET mayors, police chiefs, and school leaders who are
transforming their cities.
DISCOVER how to become a NIOT Gold Star City.
SHARE stories and strategies for building safe, inclusive
communities.
LEARN how to use films and storytelling to spark positive
change.
DEVELOP action plans to address hate and bullying.
PLAN the 2014 NIOT Week of Action.

KKK fliers were distributed. The Jewish cemetery was desecrated. The
home of a Native American family was painted with swastikas. And
a brick was thrown through the window of a six-year-old boy who
displayed a menorah for Hanukkah.
But rather than
resigning itself
to the growing
climate of hate,
the community
took a stand.
Local human
rights activists
and faith
leaders urged
businesses,
civic leaders,
and unions to
respond before
BILLINGS, MONTANA: The Town that Inspired a Movement
The Not In Our Town
movement got its start in
Billings, Montana when local
residents were faced with a
series of hate crimes.
Gary Modie, painter: “I was really glad to help paint the house, and more so, to convey a message to these guys that the community will not stand for that.”

the violence
escalated any
further.
The police
chief warned
that “silence is
acceptance”
and encour-
aged people
to take risks
for a greater
gain. And
they did.
Faith groups from every denomination sponsored marches and
candlelight vigils. Members of the Painters Union pitched in to paint
over racist grafitti. The local newspaper printed full page menorahs that
were displayed in nearly 10,000 homes and businesses.
Through these actions, the people of Billings made a simple and
powerful statement that would be echoed in communities around the
world for years to come: “NOT IN OUR TOWN.”

This year’s National Leadership Gathering kicks off NIOT Gold Star
Cities: a new initiative to recognize leading communities, small and
large, whose residents are working together for a safe, inclusive future.
The Gold Star Cities campaign certifies towns that are taking proactive
steps to prevent hate, intolerance, and bullying, and to promote diverse
participation in civic life.

community partners work together to prevent hate crimes,
improve hate crime reporting, and address underlying
tensions that can lead to violence.
NIOT.org/COPS features downloadable action guides, case
studies, and short videos which can be screened at roll call
or at community meetings to spark dialogue.
The law enforcement training track of the Not In Our Town
National Leadership Gathering was produced through this

At First Interstate, we know we are only as strong as the communities we serve. For us, being a good neighbor extends beyond the walls of the bank. It means getting involved in the community and taking care of the places we call home. Our founder Homer Scott once said, “If you are part of a place, take care of it.” As a member of the Billings community, First Interstate Bank is proud to stand with Not in Our Town to help make Billings a better place to live and work.
