The development of best management practices(BMPs) for optimum nitrogen (N) use by cropscontributes to farm profitability, increased foodand fiber production, and best stewardship of theenvironment and its resources. Such BMPs areboth site- and crop-specific. Optimum N use byplants is influenced not only by climate and cer-tain soil characteristics, but also by managementpractices such as tillage, time and method of Napplication, or positive interactions with nutrientsand supporting cropping practices. Phosphorus(P) and potassium (K) are two of the nutrientsessential for effective use of N by plants. Nitro-gen interactions with P and/or K help to improveroot system development, dry matter production, and other plant functions regulating crop yield andquality.
KEY WORDS: nitrogen, phosphorus, potassium, N-useeffectiveness, nutrient interactions, environmentalstewardship
