Market Outlook

The Week That Was

The Sensex and Nifty both ended with minor gains in the week gone by on steady

buying demand in index pivotals. The secondary indices underperformed the key

benchmark indices as both the BSE Mid Cap and BSE Small Cap indices shed over 1%.

In the week ended on Friday, 14 February 2020, the Sensex gained 115.89 points or

0.28% to settle at 41,257.74. The Nifty 50 index added 15.10 points or 0.12% to settle at

12,113.45. The BSE Mid-Cap index shed 242.61 or 1.53% to settle at 15,662.10. The BSE

Small-Cap index slumped 157.68 points or 1.06% to settle at 14,682.65.

Key equity market benchmarks ended with minor cuts on Monday, 11 February 2020.

The Nifty managed to close above the crucial 12,000 mark. Sentiment was weak amid

ongoing concerns around the coronavirus outbreak in China. The barometer BSE S&P

Sensex fell 162.23 points or 0.39% to 40,979.62. The Nifty 50 index lost 66.85 points or

0.55% to 12,031.50.

The domestic stock market advanced on Tuesday, 11 February 2020 led by positive

global cues. Global shares edged higher as some Chinese factories slowly resumed

operations amid the national fight against the novel coronavirus outbreak. The

barometer BSE S&P Sensex rose 236.52 points or 0.58% to 41,216.14. The Nifty 50 index

added 76.40 points or 0.63% to 12,107.90.

Domestic barometers advanced on Wednesday, 12 February 2020 on the back of buying

in heavyweights. The momentum was supported by positive global shares as concerns

over the ongoing coronavirus outbreak abated. The barometers S&P BSE Sensex,

gained 349.76 points or 0.85% at 41,565.90. The Nifty 50 index jumped 93.30 points or

0.77% at 12,201.20.

Key market barometers ended with small losses on Thursday, 13 February 2020. While

private banks dragged the indices lower, gains in IT shares provided support.

Trading was volatile due to expiry of weekly index options on the NSE. The barometer

S&P BSE Sensex, was down 106.11 points or 0.26% at 41,459.79.

The Nifty 50 index lost 26.55 points or 0.22% at 12,174.65.

On Friday, 14 February 2020, Key benchmark indices ended lower, dragged by weakness

in banks stocks. The barometer S&P BSE Sensex, declined 202.05 points or 0.49% at

41,257.74. The Nifty 50 index lost 61.20 points or 0.50% at 12,113.45.

On macro economic front, Ratings agency S&P Global on Thursday reaffirmed India's

long-term rating at 'BBB-' with a stable outlook, saying the country's growth will be

strong. The rating agency further added that India will maintain its sound net external

position, and its fiscal deficits will remain elevated but broadly in line within forecasts

over the next two years.

S&P expects that the economy will continue to outperform peers at a similar level of

income, despite a recent slowdown in real GDP growth. It also said that the supportive

monetary, fiscal, and cyclical factors should support economic recovery, with real GDP

growth averaging 7.1% in fiscals 2020-2024.

S&P further added that the upward pressure on the ratings could build if the

government significantly curtails its fiscal deficits, resulting in lower net indebtedness

at the general government level. On the other hand, downward pressure on the ratings

could emerge if India's GDP growth falls well below their forecasts, net general

government deficits rise further from their currently elevated levels and or political

developments materially undermine economic reform momentum.

India's Industrial Production (IIP) shrank 0.3% to 133.5 in December 2019 over

December 2018. Manufacturing sector output declined by 1.2%.

Consumer price inflation in January rose to 7.59%, holding around six-year top. CPI

rural inflation rose to 7.73% versus 7.23% in December.

January core inflation also surged to 4.8% versus 3.7% in December.

The Wholesale Price Index (WPI)-based inflation, base year 2011-12, continued to

accelerate higher for third straight month to 9-months high of 3.1% in January 2020,

showing further increase from 2.6% in December 2019, 0.6% in November 2019 and 0%

in October 2019.

The Society of Indian Automobile Manufacturers (SIAM) announced the sales figures

for January 2020. Domestic passenger vehicle sales declined 6.2% to 2,62,714 units in

January from 2,80,091 units in the year-ago month. Motorcycle declined by 15.17% to

8,71,886 units in January 2020 from 10,27,766 units a year earlier. Total two-wheeler

sales in January fell 16.06% to 13,41,005 units as compared to 15,97,528 units in the

same month last year. Sales of commercial vehicles were down 14.04% to 75,289 units

in January 2020 over January 2019.

for not paying dues worth thousands of crores to the government and summoned their

top executives to explain why they did not follow the court's order to pay up. The apex

court also hit out on a government officer who issued an order saying the recovery

order of the adjusted gross revenue (AGR) won't be operational.

The SC directed telecom providers to pay their AGR dues to department of

telecommunications (DoT) by the next court hearing on 17 March 2020. A bench

comprising Justices Arun Mishra, Abdul Nazeer and M R Shah had assembled today to

hear a batch of fresh petitions filed by telecom companies seeking more time for

payment of AGR dues.

The court made scathing observations on the conduct of the telecom companies as well

as the DoT for ignoring its 24 October verdict that had directed the firm to pay AGR dues

to DoT by 23 January 2020.

The pleas filed by Vodafone Idea, Bharti Airtel, and Tata Teleservices had sought more

time for payment of AGR related dues.

Overseas, China's producer price index gained 0.1% in January. Consumer prices rose

5.4% year-on-year, rising the fastest in more than eight years last month, with the

outbreak of the coronavirus and subsequent shutdowns of transport links across the

country.

Changyong Rhee, director of the IMF's Asia and Pacific Department, reportedly said

that China has room to inject fresh stimulus into its economy if the coronavirus crisis

hurts growth.

In United States, Federal Reserve Chairman Jerome Powell reportedly said that the US

economy appears durable, with steady growth and unemployment near a half-century

low, but faces risks from the broadening viral outbreak that began in China.

The Fed is monitoring developments stemming from the coronavirus, Powell

reportedly added, which he cautioned "could lead to disruptions in China that spill over

to the rest of the global economy."

Powell also reportedly said that the Fed is content with where interest rates are,

suggesting that no further rate cuts would be contemplated unless economic

conditions were to change significantly. Since last fall, the Fed has kept its benchmark

short-term rate in a low range of 1.5% to 1.75%, well below levels typical during

previous economic expansions.

The US Fed said it would shrink repo operations starting with Friday's overnight offering.

The Fed has been conducting repo offerings and Treasury-bill purchases in a bid to keep

control of shortterm interest rates and bolster bank reserves. The efforts had calmed

markets since a September spike. Treasuries trimmed their gains for the day.

US consumer price index inched up by 0.1% in January after rising by 0.2% in December,

with higher prices for food and shelter offsetting a steep drop in gasoline prices, the

Labor Department reported on Thursday. The uptick in consumer prices was primarily

due to an increase in shelter costs, which climbed by 0.4% in January.

Macroeconomic data, trend in global markets, the movement of rupee against the

dollar and crude oil price movement will influence market direction in truncated

trading week ahead. Inflows from foreign portfolio investors (FPIs) and domestic

institutional investors (DIIs) will also be closely watched.

Local stock markets will remain closed on Friday, 21 February 2020 on account of

Mahashivratri.

The Reserve Bank of India (RBI) will release the minutes of its monetary policy meeting

on Thursday, 20 February 2020. The Reserve Bank of India had held its repo rate at

which it lends to banks at 5.15% during its February meeting, saying it was maintaining

an accommodative stance to support growth amid rising inflationary pressure.

Overseas, Japan will announce its Q4 economic growth preliminary estimate on

Monday, 17 February 2020. Industrial production data for December will also be

announced on the same day.

In United States, the Federal Open Market Committee Meeting (FOMC) will on

Thursday, 20 February 2020 unveil minutes of the meeting held in January 2020.

US Markit manufacturing PMI and Markit services PMI for February will be announced

on Friday, 21 February 2020.

In Europe, the Euro Area consumer confidence data for February will be declared on

Thursday, 20 February 2020.
