Nightmarish Mixed-Media Collage/Montage

Romanticism

Romanticism

• Romanticism emphasized communicating emotion, especially dark emotions, like fear, apprehension, and terror.

• Also emphasized creativity and originality as opposed to using conventional ideas of something like fear. – You’ll have to think outside the box as to how to

communicate fear in a novel way.

Assignment

• Make a list of your own personal fears.• Brainstorm how to represent these fears using only symbols

and images.• Collect a variety of images (you want some to be big, some

medium, and some small) that correspond to these fears.• Some can be magazine images, and some can be your own

drawings.• You will create a mixed media collage that uses these images,

and you can add other media, like paint or charcoal to manipulate these images to heighten their emotive qualities.

• Remember, the point is to communicate the emotion of fear (Romanticists emphasized communicating dark emotions).

Collage/Montage

• You want to create a montage: make the collaged images look like they make a cohesive scene/composition.

• Remember composition rules:– Nothing smack in the middle– Include a background, middle ground, and

foreground– Use a variety of sizes (small, medium, and large) for

the images you use.– Crop things in 1/3’s, not in half.
