PROJECT SUMMARYAustralian Pipeline Trust (formerly GasNet) awarded McConnell Dowell the engineering, procurement and construction of the 45 km long, 6” diameter Nifty Gas Pipeline Project, from the Telfer Pipeline to the Nifty Copper Mine (South West of the Telfer Mine) in remote Western Australia. Engineering commenced with detailed design and procurement being performed by McConnell Dowell’s in-house design team and construction commenced in September 2005.
CHALLENGESThe environmental approvals dictated that the project had to be fast tracked, with pipeline installation completed 4 days earlier than schedule.
The team maximised off-site fabrication of foundations and skid packages for the facilities installation (eg metering stations), providing schedule and quality control benefits.
ENVIRONMENTALThe project was completed at the end of February 2006, and was short-listed for the Golden Gecko awards; the most prestigious awards for environmental excellence in the Western Australian mineral and petroleum industries. It was also runner-up in the 2006 Shell Awards for the most significant contribution to the protection of the environment for that year.
The strong working relationship between the client, various stakeholders and McConnell Dowell achieved an excellent outcome particularly with respect to environmental performance.
